KICK project aims for kicking off a development boost for rural and sparsely populated Northern and Arctic communities to re-vitalize the business life and community service provision. The goal will be reached by co-creation of innovations among key stakeholders of regional development in a quadruple-helix manner, by screening and improving community development tools and by effectively enabling interregional learning and share of best practices. The key sectors for development include tourism, wellbeing and recreation, as well as healthcare and education. Aim for this preparatory project is to screen both the existing and missing development tools in selected pilot regions, and widen the pilot region network to 5-6 different regions in total. Baseline questions to be discussed include (1) the support mechanisms to communities by municipalities and administrative bodies and (2) the actual state of multi-stakeholder cooperation in communities. Critical is to solve out how those key development mechanisms could be improved, and for that transnational good examples provide a motivation boost for new communal innovations. Goal for the KICK main project is to develop social innovations for Northern rural communities to maintain and enhance their competitiveness, vitality and service provision in the globalized world now and in the future. Novelty of the approach is the engagement of local SMEs and NGOs in public service provision, causing a win-win situation of better service provision and improved profitability. Project outputs will be applicable and tranferrable in rural communities across the NPA region.
