The Northern Periphery and Arctic Region has many renewable energy sources. However, to date they have benefitted only a small number of households, and most households are still dependent on fossil-based fuels for energy and hearing. Many of these homes are in remote and secluded regions that have to rely on external energy supplies, which have become less reliable as result of climate change. The NordRES project aims to address this by identifying best practices in promoting and implementing deployment of domestic and district-scale renewable energy, and actually implementing integration of RES technologies in 10,000 homes in the Region. These will include heat exchangers, solar panels and wood and biomass applications. Viable storage will also be explored. We also focus on how renewables contributes in new buildings to zero emissions standard and town planning praxis. NordRES will led by a consortium of local authorities, social housing organizations, private developers and research agencies and engage residents and communities. Th Pre-NordRES Preparatory Project aims to develop a high-quality proposal (NordRES) for the Fifth Call of NPA programme. Current Partners have worked together before, and have the contacts, experience and knowledge to develop a successful main Proposal. NordRES will also contribute to the development and implementation of Near Zero Energy Housing, by both private and social developers. The Pre-NordRES project has seven partners in six regions of the NPA. The lead partner is NCE Insulation with Cork County Council, Ireland and Highland Council in Scotland as other regional partners. Ume University in Sweden, Nordland Research Institute in Norway and Oulu University of Applied Sciences in Finland represent Nordic countries. Arctic Research Centre in Sisimiut in Greenland will cover regions in Atlantic islands. The consortium will therefore aim to cover most NPA areas.
