Description
Description (EN): CB HealthAccess focuses on supporting health technology companies to enter into new distant markets with their products. It builds on strong health clusters in the Central Baltic region: Estonian Connected Health Cluster lead by Tallinn Science Park Tehnopol and Tartu Biotechnology Park, Latvian Life-Science Cluster and health unit of their IT Cluster coordinated by Enixus, BioTurku led by Turku Science Park and Swedish Medtech. Each project partner has chosen one distant market where it has good experience (a partner organisation and at least one client company has achieved sales) and will open this market to the clients of other project partners. The selection of markets is from the other hand based on the potential target markets of partner cluster companies. The selected target markets are South Korea, US, India and Uganda. The specific regions in larger markets will be specified based on the local partner and needs of the cluster companies. The aim is that at least 3 new sales by a company/companies of other cluster will be achieved in all these four markets, i.e. 12 new sales in these distant markets.
Each cluster is leading a workpackage where it has good long term experiences and relations. The activities will include gathering market information (legal setup, rules for health products, financial schemes in health, competition, technological environment, partnerships, etc.), adaption of products, marketing and sales activities, involvement of experts from the target market, business missions, 121 meetings, negotiations, closing of sales. The aim of the project is to establish long term relation to these four target markets to four clusters instead of one and therefore guarantee much better and longer lasting relationships and smoother access to these markets to innovative health technology companies from all those four clusters.

The project “Access to Distant Markets in Health and Wellness” (CB HealthAccess) has helped a number of SMEs from the CB region, within the health technology sector, to achieve sales, raise investments, and to close different type of collaboration agreements in four distant markets; South Korea, the United States, India and Uganda.
In total 58 individual companies in the health technology sector from Estonia, Finland, Latvia and Sweden participated in the project. Some of the companies were active in more than one market during the project. The participation in the different markets was allocated as follows:
In the South Korean market activities; 25 companies were involved.
In the US market activities; 22 companies were involved.
In the Indian market activities; 12 companies were involved.
In the Ugandan market activities; 10 companies were involved.
Direct results within the project period, in short: 5 sales were achieved, 4 investments were raised, and 1 agreement with a business partner was signed.
Indirect results within the project period, in short: 3 preliminary agreements for co-operation were signed, 1 contract was closed, 2 cooperation projects were started, 1 test marketing was started, 1 study in a hospital was started.
In addition, in the end of the project many companies were still in negotiations or working on meeting local regulations in order to continue their access to the markets.
On a more general level the project has raised awareness of, and interest in, distant markets. As the market of health technologies is global, the companies need to expose themselves and their products to international competition and consumers in other countries in order to be able to develop more competitive products and market adaptations.

Expected Results (EN): R1.3. Number of cluster co-operations exporting to new markets
Expected Outputs (EN): The goal of CB HealthAccess is at least 3 new sales by a company/companies of other cluster in all these four markets, i.e. 12 new sales in these distant markets. 50% of these will be achieve during the project duration and 50% within one year after the end of the CB Health Access project.
The relationships with the selected four distant markets will be open for all four partner clusters and therefore it is possible to continue arranging joint missions, etc. towards these markets and also open new additional markets in the future based on the needs of cluster companies.
CB Health Access main results contribute directly to the program result indicator of cluster co-operations exporting to new markets outside EU/EFTA with focus in innovative products in health (wellness and medicine) sector.
Our consortium covers all health clusters in the Central Baltic region either with direct partnership or with cooperation agreements. Therefore the probability to build a strong meta-cluster in health capable to export to distant markets and continue widening the scope also after this concrete project is considerably high. It is also important to keep in mind that all these clusters offer incubation and export support services and can therefore not only open the access to the distant markets but support the processes, both technology and business, inside individual companies.
