The Eastern Gulf of Finland (GoF) is far behind the level of water tourism in comparison to the Western part of GoF. The Eastern GoF needs a network of small ports which have good service level and enough piers for leisure boaters to come. Because of difference between the service level of existing ports, a joint progress to increase the overall services of the area is needed. This will increase the attraction of the region and rise up the level of general consciousness. Further, effective marketing is needed to inform the visitors and to create sustainability for the business related. By this way success of selected investments and development activities in small ports can be guaranteed also in the future. The basic idea of the project is to establish a ring of well developed small ports as a precondition for lively water tourism in the Eastern GoF. This is a question where cross-border cooperation is essential. In order to increase the number of boaters there is a need for suitably equipped ports for within every 30 miles. The suggested new ring of ports around the Eastern GoF will create an attractive entirety which is known to be in the interest of boaters. The services of the ports should be well-known and all information related to accessibility clearly presented. The most important element, which is noticed is the fact that any these small ports alone is solely too tiny to receive enough visibility. Together the new network will be interesting enough to receive more attention from the potential visitors. The objectives of this project support the objectives of the programme. Firstly, focus is ensuring safety on ports. Secondly, joint development of sustainable port services is targeted to boost up the business opportunities. Thirdly, joint marketing actions are implemented to increase the general awareness of new services. Fourth, sustainability and cost-effectivity of the development decisions will be carefully studied to protect the environment.

Achievements (EN):

The main result of the 30MILES project was the increasement of the service level at the ports in the Eastern Gulf of Finland (Eastern GoF). The result was achieved with several infrastructure investments in the ports, by creating a network for the small ports and a route risk analysis related to boating in GoF. All in all, 12 different ports and 12 project partners from Finland and Estonia were involved in the project. The project increased the safety and accessability of the ports in collaboration with relevant sailing and port safety officials. The investements were made directly in the ports. The ports and partners of the 30MILES project shared common values, and a network of ports was set up. It will also function after the end of the project. The route risk analysis offers comprehensive overview on different risks related to boating in the GoF. The background work was done throughly. 30MILES created two web queries of mapping the sustainability thinking, behaviour and preferences of the small port in Finland and Estonia and the statistical reports were published. Extensive literature review on the earlier studies concerning different sustainability aspects in the context of small ports worldwide, was produced. This report also included the analysis of the open web query answers, reflected to the literature. Report includes a route map to reach sustainable port operation, outlined especially for the project area. A scientific manuscript on the key results was produced. One report and a scientific manuscript were produced on the results. The report includes a list of recommendations, how to advance the holistic long-term sustainability in the small ports. 30MILES also created an investment planning tool for sustainable small ports. The tool is based on the understanding gained and data collected during the project, concerning the aspects of sustainability in the small port context. A user manual and the model code are published on the project web page and are free for anyone to use. During the project lifecycle in 2015-2018, example of routes between 30MILES harbors, Approach videos to 30MILES harbors, Safe Harbor video course, Small Harbor safety review and Eastern Gulf of Finland boating risk analysis was made.

Expected Results (EN): R3.2. Share of Central Baltic small ports with good services

Expected Outputs (EN):

The main result of the project is targeted to have increased service level in the ports: PORVOO GUEST MARINA is one part of the Kokonniemi future Master Planning process, which will explore the new business model for services offered throughout the year. LOVIISA LAIVASILTA MARINA operations need to be designed to meet the demands of bigger boats. KOTKA OLD PORT MARINA will be part of the tourism resort which includes also outlet-, hotel- and leisure areas as well as cruise services. HAMINA TERVASAARI PORT area will focus on services for boaters as well as for all visitors, but especially tourists crossing the border between Finland and Russia by car. VIROJOKI KLAMILA harbor will remarkably be expanding its services. PYHTÄÄ KEIHÄSSALMI PORT fishing port activities are strengthened by improving the marina area and developing new services for boaters. In Viimsi, the PORTS OF LEPPNEEME and KELNASE the safety level is raised by establishing online weather stations. In the EISMA PORT will develop services to sea tourist and local small boat owners. In the NARVA PORT development activities are targeted to increase the services as a guest port. NARVA-JÕESUU HARBOR infrastructure will be renovated and harbour facilities will be developed, including provision of maritime services - yachting, boat rental etc.In the SEAPLANE HARBOR which is part of Estonian Maritime Museum, necessary services for tourists will be target of the development activities.
