Description (EN): The industries of manufacturing, supply chain, logistics, and transportation management are facing substantial change as new technologies come on board. For manufacturers, using IoT (Internet of Things) technologies is no longer an option, but a reality (Smart Factories). According to the study in the US, 76% of manufacturers expect to launch Industrial IoT applications and use of smart devices by the end of 2017 (MPI Group‘s Internet of Things Study). Development in EU is not different.
Changes in manufacturing processes will dramatically affect how logistics providers of all sizes operate. Transportation cost and delivery time are critical aspects for most manufacturers, and using technology to make transportation more efficient, helps reduce overall costs and time of the delivery. Hence it is crucial for transportation management services, warehouse management systems, and other aspects of logistics to take the IoT systems on board to be able to satisfy the changing needs of the customers.
The project develops an IoT-solution to logistics sector and tests it on the logistics companies across the two corridors (ScanMed and North Sea-Baltic). The new solution would optimise all aspects of their integrated services (transportation, warehousing, cross-docking, inventory management, packaging, and freight forwarding) by eliminating the need for routine human interaction with computer systems and giving access to vast amounts of anonymized data outside an organization. That results on decreased operational costs of the companies as well as reduced time of delivery of goods.
There are six partners in the project, covering the regions along two transport corridors and representing logistics companies, regional/local governments and research organisations . All partners have good access to the main target group of the project - logistics and transport companies along the 2 corridors.

The main aim with the project “Smart Logistics and Freight Villages Initiative” (SmartLog) was to develop new Internet-of-things (IoT) solution based on block-chain technology, that would help logistics and transportation companies to improve and make their supply chains more efficient.
Companies from Sweden, Finland, Estonia and Latvia were involved in the project along two TEN-T corridors: North Sea – Baltic and Scandinavian – Mediterranean corridor.
In order to test the new IT solution, in total 648 companies were contacted, and thorough communication with detailed analyses was conducted in 151 companies. The aim was initially to gain input to the companies software development, understand and map their processes, get an understanding on the maturity level of hard- and software and their susceptibility to the new technology.
Detailed process maps and simulations were done in 48 companies.
Finally, the developed software was connected to the IT systems of 12 companies and real time data gathered and analysed.
Within the time of the project, not enough companies started to use the new technology in such extent that measuring of the real impact and decreased transportation time on clearly defined routes was allowed. An important reason is that small and medium sized companies lack trust in new technologies due to security and privacy concerns, and they have low maturity level of digitalization.
However, the modelling shows that the improved cargo handling system would decrease transportation time and can be used and measured in every route or corridor. The time reductions along the two targeted corridors, based on process simulations, made up 6.3% and based on data analyses 3.8%. Larger time reductions can be expected when employees get more accustomed to using the benefits of the new software solution.

The focus in the next step needs to be on large companies as their processes are better mapped and digitalized, their investment and know-how capability is better and IT systems more advanced.

Expected Results (EN): R3.3. Transport flows of goods
Expected Outputs (EN): The expected travel time improvement is shown and the calculation method demonstrated in a separate document "SmartLog calculation of result". Due to a very limited space in the eMS, it is submitted separately.
In summary:
The travel time improvement is achieved by exerting influence on certain critical points along the multi- and intermodal corridor transport chain, characterised by:
A.The number of different unique operators handling the cargo along the corridor.
B.The number of modality changes along the corridor chain
C.The number of available terminals and freight villages along the corridor transport chain.
In the special case of train transportation, the benefits of all of the above characteristics are multiplied, as the main bottlenecks in cargo train traffic are formed around the timetables of the passenger trains and their priority status over cargo traffic. By adding blockchain-induced efficiency factors into route and timetable planning, the travel time reduction will be significant.
Taking the above characteristics and applying them to real world data – however incompletely available at this time – shows that in case of route between the Örebro county (Hallsberg) (SWE) and Verona county (IT):

C.The number of available terminals and freight villages: 10. Percentual effect per site 3%
Cumulative accrued overhead time would therefore come to 28,5 hours of the total transit time of 75 hours, giving us 38% of travel time spent not in motion.
With blockchain sharing method: Cumulative accrued overhead time would therefore come to 14,25 hours of the total transit time of 75 hours, giving us 19% of travel time spent not in motion. The actual total transit time in motion is therefore estimated to increase by 14,25 hours on this particular corridor example case.
