Description (EN):

We aim to improve SMEs uptake of Environmentally Sustainable Innovations (ESIs) into their business. For that the regions need to work further on how to develop models such as the cooperative business support model, where the focus should be on possible measures for business development and how companies can evolve towards an Environmentally Driven Export Market (EDEM) while working together with the whole chain of support and in close interaction with the SMEs themselves. Herein lays a need to create an international network of contacts concerning how public and private bodies can work on these issues in order to improve policy delivery for an Environmentally Driven Business Development of SMEs. EDBD implies an instrumental meaning; the purpose is to develop the businesses by developing the environmental dimension in their use of technology, in their business dealings, and their markets, i.e. the environmental aspect is a tool to develop business. As such, EDBD does not only include Clean Technologies, but also product development in other fields of business that utilize an environmentally friendly approach. The gap that we intend to address is the mid-level / regional support for EDBD/EDPD with a learning approach that clearly focuses on the needs of SMEs and that involve a close interaction between the public actors, the private actors, academia and SMEs. Attention will be given to understanding the prerequisites for supporting ESIs in SMEs and developing an EDEM. The aim is to: develop, improve and adapt regional policies that support increased international commercialization of SMEs’ ESIs and environmentally friendly products (EFPs) – better support mechanism that help mature the region’s businesses will in turn lead to improved conditions for export of EFPs and lead to increased competitiveness. The above will be accomplished thru exchange of experiences and practices, benchmarking and analysis of challenges and needs.

Achievements (EN):

In terms of activities, the project has organised a total of 87 policy learning events. It has also identified 18 good practices, produced 9 action plans and led to the increased capacity of 73 people. In terms of results, the project has succeeded in improving 7 regional development policies for a total amount of funds influenced of EUR 3,739,114. 13.

Expected Results (EN):

To develop, improve and adapt regional policies that support methods for increased international commercialization of SMEs’ Environmentally sustainable innovations (ESIs) and environmentally friendly products (EFPs) – better support mechanism that help mature the region’s businesses will in turn lead to improved conditions for export of EFPs within and outside of the EU and lead to increased competitiveness. The above objective will be accomplished thru exchange of experiences and practices, benchmarking and analysis of challenges and needs:

Expected Outputs (EN):

The majority of the partners opt for implementing the action plans developed within a structural fund project during phase 2 but our goal and mission is also to influence a change in management of the policy instruments. If we can showcase that eco-innovations are indeed marketable and can contribute to our regions growth and job creation, we believe that a bigger share of resources can be shifted towards eco-innovations instead of innovations in general in the process of how projects are selected. Adapting regional policies in accordance with the needs of SMEs working on eco-innovations is a demanding task since the issues that need to be addressed are far more complex than working with general business support. The second main issue is interconnecting the innovation support system with the internationalisation support system, companies with international dimension, working with export, import, international cooperation, developing global value chains are more durable and competitive and have higher productivity rate than companies that are regional or national. Regarding eco-innovations it is often so that the developed environmental friendly products that fail to reach the market have difficulties in creating/matching demand. That Is partly why they need to focus on internationalisation. But we also need to look at the internalisation system in it self, if it focuses too heavy on only export support, neglecting support on import, international cooperation or in support for developing global value chains then it needs to be adjusted. This view is also supported in the OECD report “Science, Technology and Industry Outlook 2014” Our ultimate goal is to assist environmentally friendly companies to be more successful and successful companies to be more environmentally friendly. The main outputs of the project: New structural fund projects on eco-innovations Policies and regional support systems that deliver greater uptake of environmentally sustainable innovations by SMEs (and therefore greater commercialization rate of environmentally friendly products) Increased number of SMEs working with eco-innovations.
