Description (EN):

Competitiveness of SMEs is high in the agenda of the European Commission (EC). Due to economic crisis there is a widespread expectation that businesses should be more accountable to the society. The EC issued the Directive 2014/95/EU, where companies concerned are required to disclose in their management report, information on policies, risks and outcomes as regards environmental, social and employee aspects, respect for human rights, anticorruption and bribery issues, and diversity in their board of directors; In other words, to integrate in their business models the CSR (Corporate Social Responsibility) principles. Although, the new directive applies only to a limited number of large EU companies it leaves out the Small and Medium sized enterprises (SMEs) that are the predominant form of enterprise in EU and a key to achieving the goals of growth and jobs strategy. Studies have shown that CSR is viewed as a vital concept that businesses of all types and size need to understand and address. Also, there is a positive relationship between SMEs and CSR and their competitiveness. Our common challenge is to help member states to apply the new directive and new measures in their Operational Programmes in order SMEs to increase their competitiveness and sustainability. The overall objective of the project is to help EU member states to apply CSR as a holistic management approach to SMEs. In this way, SMEs will increase their competitiveness. The main outputs of the project will help countries involved in the project to exchange experience, best practices and create a road map for integrating CSR into national and regional legislations and Programmes and as well to create national/regional actions plans. Moreover, an important output of the project will be the policy recommendations for the revision of the Directive 2014/95/EU in order to create precedents for future policy developments on CSR and corporate accountability not only for large companies but as well for SMEs.

Achievements (EN):

In terms of activities, the project has organised a total of 80 policy learning events. It has also identified 50 good practices, produced 6 action plans and led to the increased capacity of 243 people. In terms of results, the project has succeeded in improving 3 regional development policies for a total amount of funds influenced of EUR 7,911,040. 00.

Expected Results (EN):

The overall objective of the project is to help EU member states to apply CSR as a holistic management approach to SMEs having in mind Directive 2014/95/EU and to help member states to incorporate in their programmes CSR measures for SMEs. In this way, SMEs will increase their competitiveness and therefore be sustainable in the long run. The policy instruments of the participating regions will be improved by incorporating the CSR principles and create measures/programmes that will help SME’s to use CSR as a holistic management approach and therefore making them more competitive, sustainable, innovative and help them to manage change towards a sustainable global economy by combining long term profitability with social justice and environmental protection. The subobjective of the project are the following: • Raising CSR awareness and capacity building among policy makers, stakeholders, SME’s and general public, • Exchange of experiences and share knowledge among partners, project stakeholders and policy makers on good practices related to CSR principles and initiatives, • Contribute to bridge the existing gap in the level of development of CSR policies for SMEs from more experienced countries (sources of knowledge) to those less advanced (recipients of knowledge), • Increase the number of enterprises that adopt CSR principles and receiving support through the improved policies, • Improve the policies of the participating regions by integrating CSR principles in their policy instruments (programmes) and legislation, • Provide policy recommendations for the implementation of the Directive 2014/95/EU in order to integrate CSR principles into SMEs core business. • Provide policy recommendations for the implementation and creation of measures/programmes that will help SME’s to incorporate CSR in their daily business.

Expected Outputs (EN):

The results expected for the Road-CSR project are the following: -Identification of the level of integration of CSR principles into national/regional legislation and programmes of EU member states and estimate the existing gap between some regions and others, -Knowledge of the level of effects of the integration of CSR principles and CSR reporting to SMEs, -Knowledge of the needs of European SMEs to advance towards integration of CSR principles in their business core, -Capacity building of the stakeholders and staff of the organizations participating in the project related to CSR principles, -Capitalizing on existing knowledge from previous experiences, -Policy recommendations for Directive 2014/95/EU and dissemination of them beyond the geographical scope of the project, -Policy recommedation for the insertion of new measures in the Operational Programmes in order to ensure the implementation of CSR princibles by the SMEs, -Promotion of networking of the project partners in achieving future regional, national and European policy goals on CSR, -Improvement of the policy instruments of the participating regions for enabling SME’s to access to funding for implementing CSR. The outputs of the project are the following: - A kick-off meeting and 7 Steering Committee Meeting (6 meetings in Phase 1 and 2 meetings in Phase 2), - Leaflet of the project (7000 copies), - Banner of the project (7 copies), - Poster of the project (7 copies), - Good Practice guide for regional authorities on best CSR practices (2800 copies), - Video of the project, - 4 newsletters (one every six months) , - Policy Recommendations (700 copies), - A high level political dissemination event -final conference hosted in the Region of Extremadura (Spain) , - Presence in Social Media (Facebook, twitter) , - 42 appearances with articles in national/regional press, - 7 Joint thematic studies on the integration of CSR principles into national/regional legislation and programme , - Study on the level of effects of the integration of CSR principles and CSR reporting to SMEs, - 50 good practises, from them 42 from the 7 regions participating in the project and 8 from other EU countries, - 24 regional meeting with the stakeholders groups, - 6 join reports on the regional meeting with the stakeholders groups, - 4 series of joint (interregional) thematic seminars and workshops, - 4 reports on the joint (interregional) thematic seminars and workshops, - Presence in 3 External events (“Open Days”) , - 6 Action Plans, - 4 Progress reports (Phase 1), - 2 annual progress report of Phase 2.
