Description (EN):

The BIOREGIO project aims at improving regional policies through increased focus on circular economy of biological streams. These streams comprise food waste/bio waste, municipal and industrial sludge and agricultural residues, which can be treated with similar technologies. BIOREGIO will improve knowledge related to policies and technologies of biological streams and increase the low recycling rates of these materials. In the project, the expertise of best available technologies, e.g. bio refinery, biogas production, and relevant operation models, e.g. ecosystems, networks and administrative cooperation, will be transferred. Interregional cooperation will enhance the understanding among staff members in authorities and participating organisations to better comprehend the possibilities for closing the loops of biological streams, e.g. as is fertilizers and biofuels, instead of disposal. BIOREGIO brings together 8 partners from 6 regions with expertise and desire to change the policies and boost the regional bio economy according to objectives of the EU Circular Economy Package. The project will also deepen and develop regional cooperation as well as raise public awareness. Project activities comprise joint development of policies as well as describing regional biological streams and defining best available practices. Regional and interregional cooperation will be tightly wrapped together for achieving the best benefits for regional policy development. BIOREGIO will organize well prepared round-table discussions, workshops, seminars and site visits. As a result of BIOREGIO the partner regions will be better equipped to develop new policies and implement new technologies and models in order to move towards circular economy of biological streams. In the long run this will enhance innovations related to saving natural resources as well as green growth and new jobs. The best practices of project innovations will be clearly documented and shared for wider EU use.

Achievements (EN):

In terms of activities, the project has organised a total of 64 policy learning events. It has also identified 50 good practices, produced 6 action plans and led to the increased capacity of 84 people. In terms of results, the project has succeeded in improving 10 regional development policies for a total amount of funds influenced of EUR 4,733,134. 55.

Expected Results (EN):

OVERALL OBJECTIVE: BIOREGIO aims at improving and developing regional policies through increased focus on circular economy related to biological streams. Biological streams comprise food waste/bio waste, municipal and industrial sludge and agricultural residues which can be treated with similar kind of technologies. BIOREGIO will transfer knowledge related to closing the loops of these streams, which include best available technologies and relevant operation models such as ecosystems, networks and administrative cooperation. Interregional cooperation will enhance the understanding among staff members of authorities and participating organisations to better manage the various possibilities for closing the loops of biological streams. Furthermore, regions are better equipped to develop new policies and implement new technologies and models in order to move towards circular economy of biological streams. In the long run this will enhance green growth and innovations related to resource efficiency and saving natural resources. SUB-OBJECTIVES: 1. Develop regional policies and propose improvements to enhance circular economy of biological streams. 2. Enhance green growth through transferring knowledge about best practices of models (ecosystems, networks) related to circular economy of biological streams. 3. Enhance green growth through transferring knowledge about best available circular economy technologies of biological streams in project regions. 4. Establish and deepen knowledge and cooperation among regional stakeholders. 5. Raise public awareness of circular economy and the various possibilities of closing the loops of biological streams.

Expected Outputs (EN):

a) EXCHANGE OF EXPERIENCE: OUTPUTS: 6 interregional events including parallel workshops, seminars, round table discussions, site visits to transfer experiences of best practices in circular economy of biological streams. 6 stakeholder groups. 42 meetings with stakeholder groups. 36 reviews based on regional stakeholder meetings to be presented at the interregional events. 36 internal meetings/blog posts etc. for organisational learning where project staff share their expertise inside their own organisation. 1 criteria for evaluating the bio economy model types. 1 criteria for evaluating the best available technologies. 30-60 descriptions on regional best practices (5-10 per each project region). 1 analysis report of approaches of adopting circular economy practices of biological streams to regional policies. 8 expert papers for EU use. 6 summary reports of outputs from the interregional cooperation. 6 policy reports on instruments to connect biological streams, research results and investors. 12 policy briefs . 6 action plans to improve 6 policy instruments. RESULTS: 90 people with increased professional capacity, 6 policy instruments to be improved, all of them will fund new projects, 5 will affect the management of the instrument and 5 will influence the strategic focus of the instrument. b) COMMUNICATION AND DISSEMINATION: OUTPUTS: 1 detailed communication plan, 1 project website, 8 newsletters in 6 project regions, 48 press releases (phase 1), 1 brochure printed in 500 copies/region and disseminated in 6 countries, 1 poster printed in English/region, posters in national languages, 1 rollup in 6 project regions, activities in social media to be defined in the beginning of the project, 18 regional dissemination events, 1 final dissemination event to transfer lessons learnt, 12 success stories to be shared. RESULTS: 70 appearances in media, 1200 participants in events, 3000 website visits per semester, 1000 external stakeholders reached. c) PROJECT MANAGEMENT: OUTPUTS: 1 partnership agreement signed by all partners, 1 operational plan incl. schedule & updates per semester, 6 steering group meetings, 2 monitoring meetings in phase 2, 8 progress reports, 1 final report. RESULTS: Effective and informative day-to-day administration, financial and technical coordination, achievement of project objectives, outputs and results according to the budget as planned in the application.
