Description (EN):

The iWATERMAP project focuses on suporting the innovation policies in water technology sector, helping to increase the critical mass of innovation ecosystems in partner regions in this sector. The critical mass in innovation ecosystem approach means that all the necessary elements for innovation ecosystem are identified and put in place stage by stage, such as academia and business cooperation, cross-cluster fertilization, interregional networks and cooperation, science and education, thus ensuring stable and sustainable development of the system. The Project has selected the water technology sector as a focus area. The importance of the sector lies in its ability to help to address societal challenges related to water resource management - water scarcity, efficiency, use in other industrial sectors, resource recovery from waste water and waste water treatment etc. The sector has a large potential for generating innovative products and services which can be exported, thus also contributing to the creation of growth and jobs in the region. Overall Project objective is to improve innovation policies for enhancing the critical mass development of innovation ecosystems in the water technology sector. Reaching the critical mass in innovation will allow partner regions in future to rise above their own weight in innovation development, creating the conditions for raising competitiveness, growth and jobs in the regions. Project will address 7 policy instruments by assessments, learning sessions, roadmaps, action plan development, good practice identification and sharing and involvement of regional stakeholder groups. One of its main outputs will be preparation of roadmaps (3) for reaching the critical mass in ecosystem innovation in the sector. There are 9 partners and 7 regions participating in the Project from NL, LV, PT, ES, EL, RO and CZ, thus combining a leading regions in innovation (NL) with moderate (CZ, LV, ES, PT, EL) and modest (RO) innovators.

Achievements (EN): In terms of activities, the project has organised a total of 95 policy learning events. It has also identified 9 good practices, produced 7 action plans and led to the increased capacity of 49 people.

Expected Results (EN):

Objective: To improve innovation policies for enhancing the critical mass development of innovation ecosystems in the water technology sector. The objective will be reached by the project's sub-objectives: 1) To gain the knowledge about critical mass of innovation ecosystem approach, by assessing the current state of play of water technology sector within the regions with an outlook of potential further critical mass development of the innovation ecosystem; 2) To improve the public policy elements for enhancing the critical mass in: a) human capital development and b) internationalization strategy for regional innovation, for the water technology sector in the partner regions. 3) To develop roadmaps for policy improvement fostering innovations, based on the critical mass approach, in the water technology sector.

Expected Outputs (EN):

OUTPUTS: Exchange of experience. 6 meetings of the expert team (phase 1), including 3 thematic workshops, 28 participants in each (4 per region) . 2 partner meetings (phase 2), 14-27 participants (2-3 per partner). 6 site visits, 28 participants in each (4 per region) . 6 sets of 7 regional stakeholders meetings (42 events in total with 15 stakeholders in each). 1 conference/ working meeting (6 semester, in Brussels), 1 day, 60 participants . 1 joint assessment methodology, 10-15 pages, English. 7 regional assessments English/national language, 20-40 pages each, 1 section – international assessment, 2-5 pages, English/ 7 national languages . Three roadmaps: (1) CMDM; (2) Human Resources; (3) Internationalisation, ~20 pages each, in English and 7 national languages . 7-14 good practices identified and put on project website in Good Practice Directory. 7 regional action plans elaborated ~ 20 pages each, in national languages, summary ~ 2 pages in English. 7 policies addressed . Management: 8 Partner meetings, including 8 Steering committee meetings (6 in Phase 1 and 2 in Phase 2), 18 (2 per partner) participants in each. 1 Subsidy contract. 1 Partnership agreement. 8 Progress reports (6 per Phase 1, 2 in Phase 2). 1 Final report (Phase 2). Communication and dissemination: 1 Communication plan. 9 Posters (1 for each partner). 1 Website launched , updated once per semester (9 times). 1200 New visitors per website . 9 Websites of the project partners updated once per semester (10 times). 35 press releases, 5 per region, 4 of them in phase 1, 1 in phase 2. 1 Brochure in English, 7 national languages + in English, digital and printed 200 per language, 1600 items . 7 infographics, digital, one per region, about the roadmaps and action plans. 1 Closing conference, 60 participants (semester 9). 28 Announcements in media/through partner networks each semester (4 in each region), in total 168 announcements. 2 international anouncements about the conferences (1 in Semester 6, 1 in Semester 9). 9 Social media accounts by each partner. 6 Newsletters RESULTS: Project will result in improvement of 7 policy instruments: 1 OP Noord (NL); 2 Operational Programme Latvia "Growth and Employment” (OP)Thematic objective No1 "Strenghtening research, technology development and innovations" (LV); 3 Crete Regional Operational Programme 2014-2020 (EL); 4 Regional Operational Programme 2014-2020 (ROP 2014-2020) Romania for North East Region (RO); 5 NORTE 2020 (2014–2020 North Portugal Regional Operational Programme) (PT); 6 Regional Operational Programme for Murcia Region (ES); 7 Actualization of Strategy Vision - Strategy for Development for South Moravian Region 2020 (CZ).

Thematic information

Innovation capacity and awareness-raising Water management

Specific Objective:

Improve the implementation of regional development policies and programmes, in particular programmes for Investment for Growth and Jobs and, where relevant, ETC programmes, that support the delivery of innovation by actors in regional innovation chains in areas of “smart specialisation” and innovation opportunity
