The project Frumentum plans to develop a sustainable and bio-based plastic made from lignin and keratin. In this compound a wood and horn fibre content from the existing spectacle production of the company ROLF is to be integrated. In the further course, the spectacle frame will be developed from the innovative material, which will be marketed by ROLF. To bring a frame made of bio-based plastic on the market, the material must be appealing design and equipped with different properties. In order to realize this, in close cooperation with the MCT (Material Center Tyrol) in Innsbruck and the Transfer Center for Plastics Technology in Wels, certain properties are extracted from the materials lignin and keratin and combined to form a plastic. The spectacle frame will be created completely without metals.The material and thus the spectacle frame should stand out from conventional injection molded products and radiate a high value. The developed material with appealing design could then be used in various industries, such as the toy, furniture, smartphone industry and more. come to fruition.

Im Projekt Frumentum ist die Entwicklung eines nachhaltigen und biobasierenden Kunststoffes aus Lignin und Keratin geplant. In diesen Compound soll ein Holz- und Hornfaseranteil aus der bestehenden Brillenproduktion der Firma ROLF mit eingebunden werden. Im weiteren Zuge soll aus dem innovativen Werkstoff eine Brillenfassung entwickelt werden, die von ROLF vertrieben wird. Um eine Brillenfassung aus dem biobasierenden Kunststoff auf den Markt zu bringen, muss der Werkstoff ein ansprechendes Design enthalten und mit verschiedenen Eigenschaften ausgestattet sein. Damit dies verwirklicht werden kann, werden in enger Zusammenarbeit mit dem MCT (Material Center Tirol) in Innsbruck und dem Transfer Center für Kunststofftechnik in Wels bestimmte Eigenschaften aus den Werkstoffen Lignin und Keratin extrahiert und zu einem Kunststoff vereint. Die Schwierigkeit aus dem biobasierenden Kunststoff mit Holz- und Hornfaseranteil eine Brillenfassung zu erstellen, liegt in der Entwicklung des Spritzgusswerkzeuges. Die Brillenfassung soll komplette ohne Metalle auskommen. Dabei ist eine konstruktive Entwicklung eines direkt spritzbaren Gelenks notwendig, welches mit innovativen Fähigkeiten ausgestattet ist. Das Gelenk soll eine Stoppfunktion und gewisse Gleiteigenschaften bei entsprechender Druckfestigkeit aufweisen. Besonderes Risiko verbirgt sich dabei hinter der Gleiteigenschaften des Werkstoffes, da die Reibung zwischen Kunststoff zu Kunststoff zum Abrieb führen könnte. Außerdem soll ein Verglasungssystem zum Tragen kommen, welches das Trennen der Fassung und aber auch das Einsetzten der Gläser mit hoher Krafteinwirkung unnötig macht. Trotz der Fertigungsweise soll sich der Werkstoff und damit auch die Brillenfassung von herkömmlichen Spritzgussprodukten abheben und eine hohe Wertigkeit ausstrahlen. Der entwickelte Werkstoff mit ansprechendem Design könnte dann in verschiedenen Branchen, wie der Spielzeug-, Möbel-, Smartphonebranche uvm. zum Tragen kommen.

Expected Outputs (DE): Die Entwicklung des biobasierenden Kunststoffes mit Holz- und Hornfaseranteil erfordert auch die Zusammenarbeit mit Uni's oder Fachhochschulen . Das steigert nicht nur die grenzüberschreitenden Beziehungen sondern erhöht auch die Netzwerkaktivität.
