Wetlands are amongst the most threatened and fragile ecosystems worldwide. At the same time are recognizing as important landscape features for the NATURA 2000 network as natural water retention systems for WFD and Flood Directive, as auspices to climate change. On the tope of that they are recognizing for their services to human well being including provision of materials, mediation of extreme events, and cultural and aesthetic values. Balkan-Mediterranean territory shares natural environment of high biodiversity value including lake complexes, riverine systems and inland and coastal wetlands, many of which represent important archaeological and cultural heritage. Despite their importance, knowledge on Balkan Mediterranean wetlands is very limited and scattered and incomplete to support their protection (i.e by scientifically documenting their boundaries on maps) and conservation (i.e. by scientifically documenting their connectivity to protected networks). The overall objective of the project is the protection, conservation and development of wetlands, as a shared asset of the Balkan Mediterranean (BalkanMed) territory. BalkanMed wetland ecosystems are biodiversity hotspots with significant natural and cultural values and with high potential for territorial development and cooperation, including ecosystem basis development, improvement of knowledge, know how exchange and capacity to take informed decisions with a positive impact on the whole territory. As such, the project serves directly to 2.1. SO “to take on the transnational challenge by promoting ecological connectivity and transnational ecosystems’ integration” and contributes significantly to the overall program’s objective for a more competitive and sustainable Balkan Mediterranean area. The methodology involves 2 poles: (a) development of a common knowledge basis including mapping and creation of harmonized geospatial datasets and indicators, a database, and pilot studies on conservation techniques; and (b) activities to support the uptake of the common knowledge basis including development of guidance documents, training workshops, continuous interaction with users and stakeholders following the living lab approach for a joint strategy development, and publications for translating project findings into policy and priority actions. The WetMainAreas expected results contribute substantially to the BalkanMed programme and are directly linked to the result indicator “Expansion of ecological connectivity and transnational ecosystems’ integration of designated areas” with a target value of 3 568 225 ha.

Expected Results (EN):

The WetMainAreas expected results contribute substantially to the BalkanMed programme and are directly linked to the result indicator “Expansion of ecological connectivity and transnational ecosystems’ integration of designated areas” with a target value of 3 568 225 ha. The project’s expected results are: Mapping and assessment of wetland ecosystems connectivity and analysis of their integration to designated areas and networks (NATURA 2000, Ramsar sites), across the whole BalkanMed translational territory (Bulgaria, Greece, FYROM, Albania and Cyprus), in order to improve the needed knowledge and contribute to the implementation of Natura 2000 network and respective legislation. Update of a picture of wetlands (maps and in-situ measurements) over the BalkanMed territory in order to improve the needed scientific knowledge to enforce national legislation for protection and to support their conservation as well as local and regional spatial planning. Demonstration at 4 pilot sites of joined-up wetland conservation techniques to enhance ecological connectivity and transnational ecosystems’ integration in selected agglomeration of designated sites (i.e national parks, Ramsar sites, NATURA 2000 sites).Development of good practices for simultaneously promotion of environmental and cultural heritage based on joined-up wetland eco-tourism demonstration at 4 pilot sites. Improvement of wetland conservation policies in the BalkanMed territory and of the capacity of competent authorities to enforce national legislation, cooperate for effective implementation of EU Directives and promote wetland natural and cultural heritage and eco-tourism. Increase in the visibility of BalkaMed wetlands’ role in ecological connectivity and transnational ecosystem integration of designated areas (national parks, NATURA 2000 sites, Ramsar sites).

Expected Outputs (EN):

Activities of WP3 address the first specific objective and bring: Harmonized database and mapping layers on BalkanMed wetland ecosystems available to everybody through a portal; BalkanMed wetland connectivity indicators and information graphics; Technical Workshop on territorial ecological connectivity. Activities of WP4 address the first specific objective and bring: Guidance & pilot demonstration on wetland connectivity assessment; Guidance & pilot demonstration on tourist/cultural heritage assessment; Technical Workshop/Training: 4 Pilots demonstration. Activities of WP5 address the second specific objective and bring: State of art report on wetland relevant policies; Living Lab workshop on transnational wetland ecosystem integration; Integration of project results into policy, reflected in the following publications: “Bulgarian wetland ecosystems for enforcement of the National Biodiversity act”; “Greek wetland ecosystems for enforcement of the national Biodiversity law”; “FYROM wetland ecosystems for enforcement of Law on the Conservation and Promotion of the Environment and Nature and Law on the Protection of Ohrid, Prespa and Doyran Lakes; “Albanian wetland ecosystems and their role in the context of European Directives and climate change”; “Thessaly Region wetland ecosystems and their role in regional promotion”; “Goce Delchev wetland ecosystems and their role in regional promotion”. Activities of WP2 complements the second specific project objective and bring: Communication Strategy and Plan; Interactive web map (SDI) of BalkanMed wetlands and protected network; Promotional material: website/leaflets; Public / Dissemination events folders; e-Publication (via internet).
