Description (EN):

The HELIX initiative targets three main growth impediments in the Balkan-Mediterranean (Balkan-Med) area: * entrepreneurial skills shortages and the associated loss of competitiveness; * insufficient innovation capacity; * inefficient use of natural resources in the hospitality and tourism industry. It will improve the training offer in hospitality in view of building sustainability and innovation skills within SMEs, thereby boosting the sector’s competitiveness and growth. The project will improve knowledge transfer between education and business (with a focus on SMEs) in the fields of innovation management and environmental and economic sustainability. The main objective is to increase the competencies for sustainable business and innovation (especially among SMEs and entrepreneurs) in the Balkan-Med hospitality sector, in particular by developing effective learning and practice communities, learning tools and joint educational offers aimed at strengthening sector-specific skills for sustainability and adoption of technological and managerial innovations. The main deliverable are: *Regional Needs Assessment Report for hospitality SME sustainability;*Best practice database with sustainable development solutions; *Regional Action Plan (transnational and national level) for encouraging the competitiveness of hospitality SMEs; *“Sustainable Tourism Pedagogy” and “Entrepreneurial Skills for Sustainable Hospitality Enterprises” curricula and courses with pathways for VET, HEI, LLL and OERs; *Company mentorship tool for introducing technological and business innovations for sustainability in SMEs; *HELIX Transnational Network; *Mentorship trainings, capacity building and pilot blended mobility skill building courses; *Experience Exchange and Employment Fair for sustainable hospitality. The project will create value by improving the content and methodology of higher and continuous vocational education and training in hospitality, namely by opening them up to key emerging subjects of increasing real-world business relevance - innovations management, resource efficiency and sustainability. HELIX will seek to create a regional knowledge system for a sustainable hospitality industry supported by a collaborative regional learning, expert and practice community. It will also tackle the irrelevance of traditional business education in the field of hospitality which currently fails to produce graduates with skills that are adequate and sufficient to move the SME sector in the direction of social responsibility and the creation of shared value benefiting both society and business. HELIX is based on targeted cooperation between relevant higher education institutions and business support organizations. The consortium is connected to both business and policy-making bodies in the Balkan-Med area and is well positioned to multiply and sustain the project results, ensuring their durable impact on stakeholders.

Expected Results (EN):

HELIX offers a coordinated transnational approach to research, training and human capital development in BalkanMed area’s hospitality sector by initiating collaborative efforts among enterprises and education institutions. It develops an integrated learning system aimed at improving entrepreneurial skills and innovation management with a focus on sustainability. The project’s overall impact will contribute to improved competitiveness, innovation potential and employment – both in existing SMEs and in start-ups. It will also contribute to improving the environmental performance of hospitality SMEs – a common challenge in the BalkanMed area. The direct project results concern the hospitality sector and are: 1) Utilization of technological and business innovations in SMEs to improve their sustainability and competitiveness; 2) Improvement of the educational offer and skills-development options for managers and staff by capitalizing on technology and innovations transfer; 3) Sustained networking among education institutions and business support organizations for technology transfer, mentorship and training schemes tailored to the needs of the sector; 4) Practical implementation of sustainable development measures at the level of individual SMEs, via open procedures. The project will increase the intensity of cooperation of key actors from 4 program area countries specifically in the area of innovation in business models and technology solutions for the hospitality sector. In particular, these actors will be involved in: 1)setting strategic goals for smart growth and skills improvement; 2)creating an innovative learning system (learning tools&resources); 3)initiating practical institutional solutions for sustainable development measures in SMEs via cooperation among business support structures and education institutions. HELIX develops an entrepreneurial learning scheme and directly contributes to achieving the result indicator for SO1.3.

Expected Outputs (EN):

Each specific project objective informs one of the 4 thematic work packages and their respective deliverables i.e. outputs. The outputs build on each other starting from needs & goal definition, through learning solutions, to skill building: WP3, strategic goals for entrepreneurial learning in hospitality, targeting PSO1 * Regional Needs Assessment Report for the sustainability of hospitality SMEs – a comparative study with sections on each HELIX country; * Best-practice Database and Implementation Roadmap with sustainable development solutions for hospitality with >200 entries; * Regional Action Plan for encouraging the competitiveness of hospitality SMEs, incl. proposal for a regional transnational strategy and national strategies for HELIX countries. WP4, integrated learning scheme .., targeting PSO2 *“Sustainable Tourism Pedagogy” free training curriculum & course, with country-specific pathways for VET/HEI, LLL, Open Education Resources; *“Entrepreneurial Skills for Sustainable Hospitality Enterprises” free training curriculum & course, country-specific pathways for VET/HEI, LLL, OER * Enterpreneurial mentorship model&tool for introducing technological and business innovations for sustainability in SMEs, incl. database.
