CATCH addresses the special needs of midsize cities to deal with climate change adaptation and the resulting extreme weather events. In the North Sea Region 80% of the population live in urban areas of which a majority lives in midsize cities. Due to its scale, limited resources and expertise and tight connection with the surrounding region, midsize cities face a number of specific challenges to deal with climate change adaptation compared to large cities.Inspired by the water sensitive cites theory, the experienced partnership will develop a decision support tool and roadmap to support midsize cities in designing long term climate adaptation strategies. CATCH will demonstrate that midsize cities in cooperation with their partners can accelerate the urgent process to become climate resilient. This results in inspiring examples in the 7 pilot cities, accompanied with a practical and usable set of generic tools for further uptake and dissemination in the North Sea Region.The CATCH project offers the partnership the unique possibility to join forces (on European and regional level) and creates a unique momentum to change local behaviour, create European awareness, and support NSR midsize cities to make a significant step forward to become a water sensitive city.

Achievements (EN):

Worldwide and in the European North Sea region cities are facing big challenges. A progressively changing climate and extreme weather events, surpassing our models and an increasing urbanization pose threats for living, food, and water. The overall objective of CATCH was to demonstrate and accelerate the redesign of urban water management of midsize cities in the North Sea Region to become climate resilient cities that are sustainable, liveable, and profitable in the long run. CATCH addressed the needs of midsized cities to deal with climate change and extreme weather events. In the North Sea Region 80% of the population live in urban areas of which a majority lives in midsize cities. Due to their scale, midsized cities have specific challenges in dealing with climate change adaptation. They usually have limited resources and expertise and are tightly connected with the surrounding region. Inspired by the water sensitive cites theory, the CATCH partners developed the Adapt My City tool, a digital application to support midsize cities in designing long term climate adaptation strategies. Seven CATCH partners from cities in the North Sea Region developed 15 good practices and a practical and usable set of generic tools for further uptake and dissemination in the North Sea Region. It demonstrates that midsize cities can accelerate the urgent process of becoming climate resilient. The good practices In all the pilots, developed by the CATCH partners in Sweden, Denmark, UK, Germany, Belgium, and the Netherlands public spaces were improved, with a considerable reduction of the risks of flooding, heat stress and drought in residential areas. The projects were very successful in creating space for water in cities, while integrating ecosystem services and in involving residents in the process. Also, Adapt My City learning networks were developed in Germany and Sweden. In other countries existing networks were utilised. This way CATCH partners shared their learnings from the CATCH project to a much bigger audience. Moreover, the learning networks furthers the adoption of the Adapt My City tool to support climate and water practitioners in municipalities and regional water authorities, to develop tailor-made adaptation strategies. The University of Twente and Jade Hochschule created quite an impact by sharing and discussing the CATCH work in magazines and conferences. Highlights were the workshops Amsterdam International Water week in 2019, uptake of project results by DWA (German Association of Water Engineers) in 2022 and the set of articles on the development and implementation of the Adapt my City Tool. Our offer to other midsized cities CATCH aims to inspire other midsize cities and encourage them to use the tool and become inspired by the good practices, also now the project is finalised.
