The manufacturing industry is very important for the NSR economy and remains a driver for growth. The focus of the GrowIn 4.0 project will be the common challenges manufacturing SMEs throughout the NSR face today. Economic crisis, decrease in employment, loss of competitiveness, just to mention a few. However; the challenges also bring a lot of opportunities. Many of these are in the move toward the fourth industrial revolution - Industry 4.0 - which is regarded as the industry of tomorrow.If the manufacturing industry in the NSR is to remain competitive, we need to capture the potential for productivity and growth that Industry 4.0 appears to offer. There is a profound need for an experience based and smart gathering of efficient methods, tools and knowledge to guide SMEs in their transformation towards Industry 4.0.GrowIn 4.0 aims to build strong competences and tools in the participating regions for the benefit of manufacturing SMEs. The overall objective is to raise the level of innovation and to create more growth within manufacturing SMEs who are heading for Industry 4.0.The approach is to establish a strong partnership which pool knowledge on the manufacturing industry and Industry 4.0. Main challenges and solutions in regards of implementing Industry 4.0 will be investigated.The results of collections of new or improved methods and tools - developed in interaction with SMEs - will be universal within different areas of the NSR.

Achievements (EN):

During the project period, the GrowIn partnership achieved numerous results through a strong transnational cooperation. The different competencies, methods, knowledge and networks of the partners were instrumental in securing the following results. 22 tools were developed and/or tested 256 times in 139 companies. During our testing we found out that some tools were not applicable in the companies, and they were therefore removed from the portfolio. Based on our tests, we ended up selecting 10 tools. Industry 4.0 Awareness/Readiness tool (developed and tested) Benefit Identification tool (developed and tested) Return on Investment (developed and tested) ADMA (translated and tested in cooperation with the ADMA project) IMPULS industry 4.0 Readiness (tested) Ideation camp (developed and tested) Ostfalia I4.0 catalogue (developed and tested) Big Data Game (tested) Transition Industry 4.0Workshop (developed and tested) HRM Smart tool (developed and tested) We discovered early on, that the work package structure of the project did not make sense to the companies. They needed an indidual package of diffrent tools selected specifically for their situation. That led us to develop a working model for the GrowIn project (see annex). The model illustrates how the project based on a screening process creates a specific company package of tools for the company in question. Testing the tools did not only provide information on the tool itself, but also on how the companies work with that kind of tools and their attitude towards Industry 4.0 in general. We learned that not all companies are ready to take the step into I4.0 and that the tools, the digital readiness and matureness by the individual company is essential for the choice of tools and methods. We also learned digitalising is good and necessary for the SMEs, but in the learning phase, it is the personal contact and hands on approach that is important. Furthermore, results proved to be important, but the process towards the results is what gives the learning. Interests and choice of methods/tools depended on, in which region the company is situated. It turned out, that in many cases, the tools had to be in the native language of the SMEs for them to use it in a meaningful way. Because of this, we chose to translate selected tools from English to Dutch, Danish and German. Furthermore, we discovered that not all tools were equally intuitive to use. We therefore organised and completed a free Train the Trainer event for business intermediaries and consultants, which was held physically (in Denmark) and online to ensure that all interested business itnermediaries and consultants had the chance to participate. This will help ensure the project's legacy as the people that participated in the training can now serve as ambassadors for the available project tools. The promotion of and using of the tools will continue from the partners as well after the end of the project. To to learn more about companies attitute towards Indutry 4.0, we created a questionnaire for SMEs. We suspected that many firms, without a specific strategic decision to adopt digital capability, nevertheless did so passively while buying machinery for other reasons. This thesis was borne out. The questionnaire was also a product of our frustration at getting firms to engage with a project aimed at stimulating industry 4.0 adoption. We wanted to know whether industry 4.0 was a strategic priority or not. We found that, for the most part, it was not. We will continue to market the survey and work with the results. This will serve as part of the project's legacy as it will help cement its learnings and make them more useable with SMEs in the future.
