Inland Waterway Transport (IWT) offers relatively slow, cheap, climate friendly hinterland transport alternatives for commodities transported in large quantities or bulk. The energy input per t/km is superior to rail, road transport. Many waterways in Europe remain widely un-/underused in the past decades.Addressed challenges:Low awareness about small waterway transport opportunitiesLow innovation in small barge development, transshipment of goodsLack of expertise in using small waterway opportunitiesLack of training content and dedicated crews for small waterway sailingPartners join forces; mobilise potentials and capacity to move freight to yet under-used waterways by:Realising a quick modal shift by introducing new and proven logistic technologies and support logistic managers that decide about modal shifts.Make better use of existing waterways by adapting them towards a sufficient standard size vessels.Make better use of existing waterways by developing innovative sustainable small barge concepts.Modernizing IWT education, training with a focus on navigation on smaller waterways.IWTS 2.0. facilitates use of IWT on smaller waterways (comprehensive network) in the NSR region linking them to main TEN-T corridors.By piloting 8 small waterway modal shifts including; innovative barge-, waterway-, transshipment-, (un)loading-, freight flow mapping-, modal shift decision making solutions, we showcase proven concepts that will be adopted by the market.Click here IWTS workflows.

Achievements (EN):

We are coming towards the end of our #IWTS journey. We are very happy with the results and would be glad, if were asked to set up a new partnership for an #IWTS 3.0 project. The last month of the project were quite busy and demanding - During the last leg of our journey, we came across the following highlights: CORONA: We were severely impacted by the pandemic. Not only must we conclude, that online meetings can replace face to face meetings and workshops not entirely, but we also had to bring a new partner on board in order to be able to proceed with the construction of the zero emission barge, since the partner, who was initially responsible for this became financially incapacitated due to no fault of its own. Furthermore we hat to inactivate another partner, since a shift in the staffing of this organization lead to a situation, in which our main contacts were no longer available for the project. WP 1 Finalizing the project from a project management perspective - creating the final report/ finalizing financial management WP 2 Newsletter 5 and 6 (final newsletter) were published Launch ceremony for the Green-Wave was organized and executed in October 2020 as an online event due to Corona Final Conference was planned and executed in April of 2020 as an online event due to Corona Both events were quite successful WP 3 Development/Purchase Simulator Model CEMT class Vb inland container barge and simulator model waterway Drachten (Friesland) is concluded - tests in he simulator were successfully conducted WP 4 Zero Emisson Electric barge Greenwave is arrived in Gent and is undergoing tests and already concluded the first freight operations - additional the development/Purchase of the simulator model of the fully electric barge (Greenwave) and simulator model of the waterways in Gent are concluded - tests in the Simulator were successfully conducted WP 5 The Innovation Challenge aiming on the promotion of IWT as a viable alternative in the logistics chain, which was hosted by Bremenports was a big succes with a lot of attention and even more participants The Center of Expertise for IWT is succesfully implemented at the MAH - all the simulator tests were conducted in this format We were unable to test the developed training course during the reporting period, since no students were allowed in the school during the corona lockdown. WP 6 We conducted a SWOT analysis on the potential of IWT in selected NSR regions as an additional task which was published recently through the #IWTS 2.0 website and other platforms.
