The SEEV4-City project main overall objective focuses on the demonstration and take-up of green mobility solutions and services in North Sea Region Cities. Electric vehicle charging creates energy demand peak when renewable production is low, renewable energy production peaks when demand is low. The result of this disparity is: Electric vehicles aren’t charging on renewable energy sources. High grid investments needed for electric vehicle charging. The challenge is to structure the system in a way that electrical vehicles react to the local production of renewable energy. And ICT systems can turn these problems to solutions. Electrical vehicles, renewable energy sources and ICT-services are the core of SEEV4-City. SEEV4-City turns barriers and negative side effects of electric vehicles and renewable energy sources into chances for future zero emission electrical vehicle expansion. SEEV4-city goals: increase use and total amount of renewable energy in city mobility; facilitate the electricity infrastructure with new technologies necessary for large roll out of electrical vehicles and renewable energy sources; demonstrate new business for electrical vehicles to promote electric transportationprovide a new green fueling infrastructure so-called vehicle4energy services. SEEV4-City will: 1) APPLY INNOVATION: Technological, financial, social; 2) CREATE NEW EV SERVICES: Introduction vehicle4energyservices; 3) STIMULATE POLICY UPTAKE: SUMP to SUMEP (Sustainable Urban Mobility & Energy Plan).

Achievements (EN):

Advancing smart electric mobility solutions across Europe The EU strategy for smart growth includes ultra-low carbon transport and robust energy systems to reduce environmental impacts of mobility and energy consumption. SEEV4-City demonstrated the viability of smart electric mobility solutions in this. The consortium (universities, municipalities, consultancies, industry, and European umbrella organisations) advanced concepts into their actual integration with renewable energy sources. Pilots also contributed to spin-offs, new strategies, policies, projects, and investments. Real-world applications across seven cities When SEEV4-City started, Vehicle-to-Grid (V2G) was still a largely theoretical concept and smart charging not yet pervasive. The goals were CO2 emissions mitigation, increasing ultra-low emission kilometres, increasing energy autonomy, avoiding grid investments, and making power grids compatible with an increase in electro-mobility and local renewable energy production. The consortium ran seven operational pilots across four countries (the UK, the Netherlands, Belgium, and Norway). They tested the possibilities for sustainable urban mobility and energy plans (SUMEP), Electric Vehicle-for-Energy-Services (eV4ES), and business models for home, business, neighbourhood, and city-scale solutions. These ranged from a single household, office buildings with multiple electric vehicles, a car parking garage, stationary batteries and power parking at a football stadium, to large-scale public smart charging solutions. A variety of innovative solutions All the pilots developed and tested ICT systems for energy management. The project developed and improved methodologies to monitor, evaluate and assess impact. The ability of second-life and new EV batteries to provide frequency services and replace fossil fuel backup generators was tested. The pilot succeeded in integrating locally-generated renewable energy, smart control of electric vehicles, and battery storage. A household pilot achieved a 30% increase in energy autonomy through a V2G application, while also demonstrating the influence of battery and PV size. Cyber security components were connected to safety requirements for big energy storage systems. The project also evaluated business models for smart charging and V4ES across different types of environments and levels: vehicle2home, vehicle2street, vehicle2neighbourhood, and vehicle2business. It mapped costs and benefits for the stakeholders, leading to viable business cases, along with regulations, policies and incentives. Stakeholder cooperation for policy recommendations The SEEV4-City project consulted public and private stakeholders to create an extensive support base. The team then used the results of their pilots and research to recommend appropriate policies at local, regional, national, and EU levels. They also highlighted challenges, such as the regulatory and fiscal framework, the need for standardisation and communication protocols, subsidy schemes and other incentives, as well as the need for awareness raising and further research. The team ensured knowledge transfer and exchange across stakeholder groups and projects, including educational materials. The need for system harmonisation Project partners and pilots allowed comparing and evaluating the viability of technological and economic solutions in various contexts. National and regional energy markets and grids were found to strongly influence achievable energy savings, as well as the business cases for innovation.
