Bioeconomy has an enormous potential for Green Growth and professional development, and thus is considered as a key discipline of the 21st century. EUs bioeconomy strategy addresses the production of renewable biological resources & their conversion into vital products. Expanding bioeconomy, particularly in rural areas, represents a major development potential. In the Alpine regions, this potential can however only be harnessed if the actors and municipalities cooperate closely and pursue shared objectives. The overall objective of AlpBioEco is to foster the sustainability of the local economy in the Alpine Space by the valorisation of innovative bioeconomical potentials along bio-based food and botanical extract value chains (VCs). It contributes to the framework conditions for innovation, resulting in eco-innovative business ideas & concepts for SMEs. By implementing & stimulating eco-innovations in practice, exemplarily 3 VCs are analysed, while a cross-sectoral multi-level stakeholder approach is applied. SMEs, clusters and initiatives, administration and politics as well as academia work together. A communication strategy on the basis of the quadruple helix approach strengthens the awareness of bioeconomy in Alpine regions. Within a validation report the approach of eco-innovation along bio-based food production VCs in Alpine regions is provided. Thus, AlpBioEco increases capacities of SMEs to jointly develop bio-based products. Through concepts of `Open Innovation´, it intensifies transnational cooperation for eco-innovations in the bio-based economy. In sum, AlpBioEco contributes to a better cohesion and integrated territorial development since rural regions become connected in new bio-based VCs. Thereby high value jobs will be induced in the agricultural sector. On a macro-regional level, AlpBioEco contributes to a lower disparity of the Alpine Space.

Achievements (EN):

The AlpBioEco research project addressed the bioeconomy potentials in six Alpine regions of the European Union. The project aimed at unlocking the potentials of bioeconomy along the value chains of vegetable extracts and foods by strengthening regional value chains, contributing to the high-quality use of residual materials. By picking the value chains of apples, walnuts, and herbs, AlpBioEco focused on important regional value chains of the respective Alpine regions. Using innovative methods, AlpBioEco contributed to sustainable development in the Alps, raised awareness regarding economic potential in the bioeconomy, and actively supported interdisciplinary and supra-regional cooperation for the development of innovative business concepts. Among other aims, one of the main project goals was to develop eco-innovative business model blueprints to unlock new competitive advantages by developing new products and services for small and medium-sized enterprises in the Alpine food value chains of apples, walnuts, and herbs. The AlpBioEco consortium analysed bioeconomic value chains in the Alpine space (work package T1), ideated and developed seven eco-innovative business models for the value chains of apples, walnuts, and herbs (work package T2), validated and tested them in pilot projects and business practices with local businesses (work package T3), and lastly developed economic and political guidelines for the transregional adaptability and transmissibility of results (work package T4).

Expected Results (EN): Level of maturity of framework conditions for innovation for generating innovation processes among business, academia and administration

Expected Outputs (EN):

The implementation of elaborated eco-innovative business concepts matures the Alpine innovation framework for bio-based SMEs. Their capacities to jointly develop bio-based products are increased. Gaps in value chains of the bio-based economy are closed by the valorisation of innovative bio-economical potentials and the development of new applications. The engagement of various stakeholders by pilot activities raises their awareness of the potential of eco-innovations and encourages transnational cooperation. Green Growth and Circular Economy are fostered and the support for bioeconomy and AlpBioEco’s approach gains momentum and will eventually be transferred to the policy implementation level.
