To preserve the cultural landscape in the Alps and reach the ambitious climates targets will only be possible if we intensify our efforts in the valorisation and sustainable use of the historic buildings and understand this task as a mission for the whole civil society. The ATLAS project will point to the (re)discovery of – not necessarily protected – traditional architecture (buildings and ensembles), often situated in less-favoured areas and with a low level on energy efficiency and living comfort. Moreover, it will pave the way for their sustainable development towards low carbon Alpine lifestyle and society. ATLAS will capitalise results of past and ongoing research projects in the Alpine region like AlpHouse, AlpBC, CESPA Alps, ENERBUILD and develop policy instruments at three levels : 1) A Historic Building Atlas for the Alpine Space will be established as a tool for the capitalization of best practice building retrofit. 2) Concepts for low carbon retrofit and RES integration will be socially, culturally and technically evaluated and adapted to the Alpine archetypes and 3) Historic building retrofit will be established as part of sustainable regional development strategies and business concept. To reach this targets ATLAS will provide advanced tools such as an online decision-support tool for environmental building retrofit and a ToolKit for municipalities. Tailored Training and dissemination activities like the cross-border EnerCulTour and transnational workshops will ensure the knowledge exchange and implementation of project outputs. Aditionally it will result in an increased number of high-level retrofits, the valorisation of the cultural landscape and the achievment of low carbon targets. Partners with expertise in energy efficiency, heritage preservation and regional development will work closely together in ATLAS. The integration of the municipalities directly into the consortium is key for developing and implementing the project results.

Achievements (EN):

The Alpine Space is rich of cultural heritage including historic architecture. Traditional Alpine architecture is often located in neglected areas and provide low levels of energy efficiency and comfort. The ATLAS project showed ways for sustainable development of historic structures. It developed amongst others a guide to an optimised renovation strategy that particularly considers sustainability aspects without forgetting about socio-economic impact and cultural values. The project provided methodologies and tools for municipalities and policy makers in the Alpine Space to implement optimal sustainable regional development policies and renovation strategies, focusing on the reduction of the ecological footprint and carbon emissions as well as the increase of energy efficiency of a historical building stock.

• Increased number of high value renovations – considering historic and energetic aspects. • Improved living comfort and ecological footprint of traditional buildings. • Capitalized best practice environmental renovations and available guidelines and research studies. • Municipalities engaged in traditional building renovation. • Sustainable use of historic buildings implemented in regional development strategies. • KPIs including also co-benefits and socio-economic value developed and integrated • Better informed building owners and planners.
