Description (EN):

The Project addresses the major cross-border challenge of the Pannonian Region and the bordering agricultural land that is anthropogenic influence from rural and agricultural areas, particularly water pollution. The poor water quality is causing the loss of biodiversity and often makes surface waters inadequate for irrigation. Analyses of selected physicochemical parameters by analytical methods and continuous in-situ fibre optical system (FOS). Biodiversity survey enables the comparison of the buffer capacity and habitat quality of the bank vegetation. The main objective is to enforce integrated cross-border monitoring for key parameters and existing risks, as well as environmental and biodiversity protection. It will be carried out by implementation of integrated continuous monitoring system for the purpose of cross-border data collection and evaluation. The expected changes are improvement of the knowledge level and existing data, use of modern sensor methods, development of guidelines for surface and groundwater and biodiversity protection by bankside vegetation management. Development of new database, rapports and evaluation of analytical results. The results will be a manual, for the establishment and maintaining vegetated strips along the banks of surface waters in agriculture landscapes of Pannonian Region. The optimal structure of multifunctional bank vegetation defined by the analysis of merged data. The main target groups are Local and regional authority (and community) and General public, interest groups including NGOs, Higher education and research, and Education/training centre and school. Surface and ground water pollution is a pressing cross-border problem. Project sites are within hydrological systems of watercourses recognised as ecological corridors. The wetland in Croatia has a direct influence on the quality of the Natura 2000 site, the site in Serbia is proposed for the Nature Park.

Achievements (EN):

The SeNs Wetlands project is dedicated to finding the new measures to protect wetlands and biodiversity they hold. In the past 30 months, partners contributed to the achievement of all the project goals. The integrated cross-border active sensor monitoring system was developed. Twelve wireless sensor stations for measurement of water parameters have been implemented in implementation sites at Zobnatica Lake and surrounding wetlands area, and ten in implementation sites at Tompojevacki ritovi wetlands area. The analyses of physicochemical parameters in water by analytical methods and new fiber optic sensor method, for samples of surface water, groundwater, and wastewater, collected in Serbia and Croatia have been performed periodically. The common cross-border database including all the obtained results and the environmental part containing results of biodiversity, buffer strips and environmental-related research at Zobnatica Lake and Tompojevacki ritovi areas is accessible to a wide audience via the SeNs Wetlands project web site. Leaflets for the popularization of multifunctional vegetation strips, on three local languages (Serbian, Croatian, and Hungary), and guidelines for the establishment of multifunctional vegetation strips have been published and distributed to the local population.

Expected Results (EN): Disaster response capability in the programme area.

Expected Outputs (EN):

• Improved management of environmental and biodiversity protection, especially wetlands and ecological corridors, and upgraded joint cross-border management system for risk prevention provided by developed wireless monitoring system for fast sensing of disaster environmental contamination, and performed quantitative and qualitative analysis of the main physicochemical parameters of the water bodies quality with analytical laboratory and new developed fiber optic sensor methods. • Implemented correlated cross-border database of physicochemical parameters and monitoring data obtained during continuous active monitoring system on site and in Laboratory to be used as guidelines for sustainable, optimal and wise use of natural water bodies. • Performed biodiversity survey and study on vegetation types with great adsorption and absorption potential for organic anthropogenic pollution to decrease the eutrophication of aquatic ecosystems, also suitable to contribute to biodiversity conservation. • Defined guidelines for the cost-effective establishment and management of bankside multifunctional vegetation buffer strips to improve pollution control, habitat quality and landscape connectivity in agricultural areas of the Pannonian region. • Developed and implemented joint awareness raising activities: educational programs, workshops and trilingual leaflets for popularisation of the project results. All the expected results are directly connected to programme result indicatores.
