Description (EN):

An integrative, landscape management approach incorporating socioeconomic and climate change scenarios is critical to ensure the delivery of benefits from investments in Blue and Green Infrastructures to meet the 2020 EU biodiversity targets and sustainable development in the Atlantic Region. The ALICE project will develop a comprehensive package of new methods, tools and procedures to identify economic and social barriers to the delivery of benefits from Blue and Green Infrastructures implementation and to improve the characterization of biodiversity and the valuation of Ecosystem Services across four Atlantic case studies (Portugal, Spain, France and UK-Ireland). ALICE will focus on participative learning and modelling by engaging stakeholders and policy makers to identify best Blue and Green Infrastructures solutions. The key objectives of ALICE are: (i) develop a full-package of new methods, tools and procedures to assist with coastal and inland landscape management; (ii) targeting and stimulating BGI investment within the four case studies by quantifying the benefits for ES including biodiversity conservation, (iii) identify solutions for the economic and social barriers, which may limit investment in BGI in each of the four case studies, (iv) provide with stronger scientific and socioeconomic support for the effective implementation of future BGI and environmental policy.

Achievements (EN):

An integrative landscape management approach incorporating future scenarios is critical to meet EU biodiversity targets and sustainable development in the Atlantic region. However, there is a lack of common methodologies and integrated policies for assessing biodiversity patterns and ecosystem service fluxes across coastal, freshwater and terrestrial ecosystems. In this context, ALICE project has advanced in the characterisation of biodiversity and the evaluation of ecosystem service at the land-sea interface in order to assess the delivery of benefits from investments in Blue and Green Infrastructure Networks (BGINs) in the coming decades. The project is focused on the development of participative learning and modeling approaches by engaging stakeholders and policy makers since early steps of implementation, in order to identify the barriers to the delivery of implementation of BGINs across 4 case studies in Portugal, Spain, France and UK-Ireland. As main achievements, the highlight goes to the development of a multi-model platform capable of integrating terrestrial and aquatic ecosystem models into demonstrative exercises of BGINs. This enables designing resilient landscapes with regard to global change effects in different socioecological scenarios, opening a public debate of their efficient implementation. Another major contribution is the identification and classification of barriers that slow down or even prevent the implementation of BGINs globally, contributing to a participatory culture that will be maintained and remain stable in the long term. ALICE is assessing landscape functioning in an integrated manner and moving cuttingedge science towards the local economy and stakeholders’ perception, connecting what is simply desirable from an environmental point of view to what is actually possible to undertake in real socioecosystems. Expected Results (EN): Identification of the best Blue and Green Infrastructures (BGI) solutions and evaluatation of economic and social barriers to the delivery of Ecosystem Services.

Expected Outputs (EN):

• Practical guidance on how investment in Blue and Green Infrastructures (BGI) could be prioritized in coastal, rural and urban planning to increase ecosystem services delivery for better adapting to climate change; • Producing a user friendly integrative modelling platform that facilitates ecosystem services evaluation and trade-off analyses by managers, stakeholders and business communities; • Developing new methods for habitat mapping and monitoring of conservation status (sensu Habitats Directive) using remote sensing and ecological modelling tools; • Practical guidance to identify thresholds controlling ecosystem services delivery under realistic scenarios of global change and policy development across the Atlantic region; • Development of innovative participatory approaches for decision support to realistically inform future socioeconomic and environmental policy; • Practical guidance on how the characterization of biodiversity and ecosystem services should be integrated in the current EU policy agenda (e.g. Habitats Directive, Common Agrarian Policy, Marine Strategy Framework Directive, Water Framework Directive, Flood Risk management and EU 2020 Biodiversity Strategy).
