Description (EN):

Emerging social issues and challenges within social innovation are requiring new responses as institutions are finding increasingly difficult to provide solutions based on traditional methods. Atlantic Social Lab aims to develop and promote social innovation approaches and methods to give response to key growing social issues of the Atlantic Area, both within citizens, third sector and social enterprises as well as the public sector. The partnership will implement and test small probing interventions to finally scale them up in the following areas: i) social innovation and welfare services, ii) social innovation and active public engagement, iii) green inclusive economy and iv) social economy and social responsibility in the private sector. This project also intends to implement new methods of further citizen engagements (i.e. participative budgeting or open decision making systems) to recognise the importance of the active involvement of citizens to the successful development of the Atlantic regions. Insights and results will nourish the creation of the Atlantic Social Innovation Action Plan that will provide transferrable solutions to other Atlantic Areas.

Achievements (EN):

The Atlantic Social Lab has recently made available a set of three documents: a study on social innovation and the pandemic; a report on the trends of social innovation; and four thematic leaflets. These documents are the results of the work done in the project since 2018, reflecting some of the main conclusions that the team reached. They are now published with the aim of being a tool for the people interested in the topic of social innovation, providing clues to implement ideas and innovative approaches, thus favouring the theorical and practical appropriation of this notion. The study Social innovation in a world of multiple-transitions is the result of a joint reflection between Manuel Laranja, Professor at the ISEG-University of Lisbon, and Hugo Pinto, responsible for the ASL project on behalf of CES. Realised in the context of the Atlantic Observatory for Social Innovation, the study focuses on the role of social innovation in the transition towards a more sustainable and equal society in the post-pandemic world. Identifying various relevant initiatives in different countries of the world, the analysis suggests social innovation as the answer to the deep changes prompted by the Covid-19 pandemic. The report entitled Trends on social innovation: perspectives from four domains was developed from the experiences of the ASL project pilot actions and work groups and it centres on the identification of trends in the project thematic areas. This document presents the experience of the implementation of the pilot actions in the ASL as a demonstration of the use of social innovation in the context of public, private and third sector organisations to deal with emerging social problems and stimulate the improvement of the standards of living. Finally, four thematic leaflets were produced, according to the domains of the project: i) social innovation and welfare services, ii) social innovation and public active engagement, iii) green inclusive economy, and iv) social economy and social responsibility in the private sector. They are summary documents for online distribution, with fundamental information on the pilot actions and trends identified in the four thematic areas of the project.

Expected Results (EN):

The main project results will encompass: (i) the development of dynamics from a quadruple helix approach in view of strengthening skills on social innovation and citizen engagement; (ii) a major influence to mainstream social innovation approach into regional policies, (iii) an increasing capacity building of public sector itself as a driver of innovation.

Expected Outputs (EN):

• 7 pilot actions implemented to test social innovation initiatives across the 5 countries in the framework of the 4 selected thematic areas. • 4 technical and scientific publications focused on the key insights of each of the 4 working groups created. • 4 policy, strategy and operational instruments: mapping social needs in the Atlantic Area; Atlantic social innovation action plan; benchmarking of good practices from the pilot actions; Atlantic monitoring observatory on social innovation. • Several actions for the dissemination and capitalisation of results: communication and capitalisation strategy; web platform on Atlantic Area social innovation initiatives; short films on best practices. • 900 participants in actions for the dissemination and capitalisation of results: Atlantic social innovation conference; local dissemination events; regional working groups.
