De fruitsector in de grensregio ondervindt steeds meer concurrentie vanuit het zuiden en Oost-Europa. Om de sterke positie van de fruitsector in Vlaanderen en Nederland te behouden, is een rendabiliteitsstijging vereist. Precisielandbouw kan dankzij sterk geëvolueerde technologie opportuniteiten bieden om op een realistische, betaalbare en duurzame manier de fruitteelt een competitief voordeel te bezorgen. Zo kan met minimale input van hulpmiddelen een maximale oogst met een kwalitatief product tot stand komen. ‘Intelligenter fruit telen’ wil precisiefruitteelt verder op punt stellen, demonstreren aan de fruitteler en stimuleren. Drie zaken worden onderzocht: bodem, gewasontwikkeling en oogst. Concreet worden voor elk thema verschillende parameters gemonitord en in kaart gebracht. Dit is enkel mogelijk met accurate data uit metingen van diverse delen van de boomgaard op verschillende tijdstippen, gegenereerd door sensoren op bijvoorbeeld tractoren of remote sensing via drones. Daarnaast wil het project op basis van de gegenereerde gegevens de voordelen toepassen op proefpercelen van Proefcentrum Fruitteelt, Boomkwekerij Fleuren (Baarlo) en pilootbedrijven in Vlaanderen en Nederland, in combinatie met een analyse van de meerwaarde en/of terugverdientijd voor de fruitteler. Daarbij wordt een online tool ontwikkeld waarmee de fruitteler kaartgegevens van eigen percelen kan raadplegen met informatie over gewasontwikkeling, (fruit)productie, nutriëntenstatus, ziektedetectie, bodemstructuur, bodemvochtgehalte... om zo tot een uiterst duurzame en energie-efficiënte fruitteelt te komen.

The fruit farming sector in the border region is experiencing increasing competition from the south and Eastern Europe. To maintain the strong position of the fruit farming sector in Flanders and the Netherlands, an increase in profitability is required. Thanks to strongly evolved technology, precision agriculture can offer opportunities to deliver a competitive advantage in a realistic, affordable and sustainable way to the fruit farming sector. This way a maximum harvest with a qualitative product can be achieved with a minimal input of resources. 'Intelligenter fruit telen' aims to further fine-tune the precision fruit production, demonstrate it to the fruit grower and stimulate it. Three issues are being investigated: soil, crop development and harvest. In practice, different parameters are monitored and recorded for each theme. This is only possible with accurate data from measurements of various parts of the orchard at different times, generated by sensors on, for example, tractors or remote sensing via drones. In addition, on the basis of the generated data, the project wants to apply the benefits to trial plots of the Fruit Farming Experiment Center, Tree Nursery Fleuren (Baarlo) and pilot companies in Flanders and the Netherlands, in combination with an analysis of the added value and/or payback period for the fruit grower. An online tool is developed with which the fruit grower can consult map data of his own plots with information about crop development, (fruit) production, nutrients status, disease detection, soil structure, soil moisture content... in order to achieve extremely sustainable and energy-efficient fruit farming.

Door stijgende concurrentie vanuit het zuiden en Oost-Europa en door slechte weersomstandigheden heerst de laatste jaren een economische crisis in de Vlaams-Nederlandse fruitsector. Om de crisis tegemoet te komen is een rendabiliteitsstijging vereist. Precisielandbouw biedt de opportuniteit om op een realistische, betaalbare en duurzame manier de fruitteelt een competitief voordeel te bezorgen. Zo kan met minimale input van hulpmiddelen een maximale oogst met een kwalitatief product tot stand komen. ‘Intelligenter fruit telen’ wil precisiefruitteelt testen, op punt stellen, demonstreren aan de fruitteler en naar de praktijk brengen. Drie zaken worden onderzocht: bodem, gewasontwikkeling en oogst. Concreet worden voor elk thema verschillende parameters in kaart gebracht. Dit is enkel mogelijk met accurate data uit metingen van diverse delen van de boomgaard op verschillende tijdstippen, gegenereerd door sensoren op bijvoorbeeld tractoren of door remote sensing via drones. Daarnaast wil het project op basis van de gegenereerde gegevens de voordelen demonstreren op proefpercelen van pilootbedrijven in Vlaanderen en Nederland, en de meerwaarde en/of terugverdientijd voor de fruitteler analyseren. Zo blijkt het gebruik van bodemscans en dronebeelden een duidelijke meerwaarde te bieden voor o.a. irrigatie en opbrengstvoorspelling.Tenslotte wordt een online dashboard ontwikkeld waarmee de fruitteler kaartgegevens van zijn percelen kan raadplegen, waaronder bodemkaarten, satellietbeelden en de resultaten van o.a. bodemscans en dronevluchten. In het project Intelligenter Fruit Telen werden verschillende variabele teeltmaatregelen getest, namelijk variabele irrigatie, bemesting, dunning, snoei en wortelsnoei. Door het variabele perceelbeheer te vergelijken met het gangbare, uniforme perceelbeheer, werd de terugverdientijd voor de fruitteler geanalyseerd en de hulpbronefficiëntie bepaald. Hieruit blijkt dat precisiefruitteelt vooral interessant is voor grotere percelen met veel variatie in groei, opbrengst en/of kwaliteit. Hier kan namelijk het grootste verschil verwezenlijkt worden t.o.v. de gangbare teeltmethodes. Op basis van de projectresultaten zijn verschillende rapporten opgesteld:: In twee proefpercelen werd de sensordata gebruikt om de irrigatie variabel aan te sturen. Variabele bemesting: De groei, opbrengst en kwaliteit van drie proefpercelen met een variabele bemesting werden vergeleken vs. uniforme bemesting. Relevante bodemparameters: De EC van de bodem heeft vaak een belangrijke invloed op de groei en/of opbrengst van de bomen. Een bodemscan vormt dus een goede basis om precisiefruitteelt toe te passen. Variabele dunning: Om verschillen in opbrengst en/of vruchtmaat recht te trekken kan variabele chemische dunning o.b.v. bloembottellingen worden toegepast. De opbrengst en maatsortering werden vergeleken voor variabele vs. uniforme dunning en ongedund. Variabele snoei: Om verschillen in gewasontwikkeling recht te trekken kan de snoei en/of wortelsnoei aangepast worden aan de variatie in het perceel. Relevante groei- en opbrengstenparameters: Om te bepalen welke vegetatie-indices relevant zijn m.b.t. precisiefruitteelt werden de vegetatie-indices vergeleken met de groei van de bomen. Ook wordt besproken welke dronegegevens relevant zijn voor de opbrengst van de bomen m.b.t. precisiefruitteelt. Omdat het telkens over kleinschalige proeven van max. 3 groeiseizoenen op max. 2 percelen gaat, moeten de resultaten echter met de nodige zorgvuldigheid geïnterpreteerd worden. Bijkomende testen zijn vereist vooraleer gegronde conclusies getrokken kunnen worden omtrent de rendabiliteit en hulpbronefficiëntie van precisiefruitteelt.

In order to cope with the crisis, there is a need for an increase in profitability. Precision agriculture offers the opportunity to deliver a competitive advantage to fruit growing in a realistic, affordable and sustainable way. For example, with minimal input from tools, a maximum harvest with a qualitative product can be achieved. “Intelligent Fruit Growing” aims to test, establish, demonstrate to the fruit grower and bring it to practice. Three cases are examined: soil, crop development and harvest. In concrete terms, different parameters are mapped out for each theme. This is only possible with accurate data from measurements of various parts of the orchard at different times, generated by sensors on, for example, tractors or remote sensing via drones. In addition, based on the data generated, the project aims to demonstrate the benefits on pilot parcels of pilot companies in Flanders and the Netherlands, and analyse the added value and/or payback time for the fruit grower. For example, the use of soil scans and drone images appears to provide a clear added value for irrigation and yield forecasting.Finally, an online dashboard is being developed with which the fruit grower can consult map data of its plots, including soil maps, satellite images and the results of soil scans and drone flights. In the Intelligent Fruit Counting project, several variable cultivation measures were tested, namely variable irrigation, fertilisation, thinning, pruning and root pruning. By comparing the variable parcel management with the common, uniform parcel management, the payback time for the fruit grower was analysed and resource efficiency determined. This shows that precision fruit cultivation is particularly interesting for larger parcels with a lot of variation in growth, yield and/or quality. Here, the biggest difference can be achieved from the usual cultivation methods. Based on the project results, several reports have been drawn up: In two test plots, the sensor data was used to control irrigation variablely. Variable fertilisation: The growth, yield and quality of three test parcels with variable fertilisation were compared vs. uniform fertilisation. Relevant soil parameters: The EC of the soil often has an important influence on the growth and/or yield of the trees. A soil scan is therefore a good basis for applying precision fruit cultivation. Variable dunning: To straighten differences in yield and/or fruit size, variable chemical dunning can be applied for flower bone counts. The yield and size sorting were compared for variable vs. uniform dunning and undiluted. Variable pruning: To correct differences in crop development, the pruning and/or root pruning can be adjusted to the variation in the parcel. Relevant growth and yield parameters: To determine which vegetation indices are relevant for precision fruit cultivation, vegetation indices were compared with the growth of the trees. It also discusses which drone data are relevant to the yield of the trees with regard to precision fruit cultivation. However, because it covers small-scale trials of up to 3 growing seasons on up to 2 parcels, the results must be interpreted with due care. Additional testing is required before well-founded conclusions can be drawn on the profitability and resource efficiency of precision fruit cultivation.
