Worldwide, it is estimated that more than 25 billion tons of concrete are used annually. The environmental impact of concrete production is large, as cement is needed in addition to granulate (sand and stones) for the production of concrete. This is not only energy-intensive, but it also ensures a high CO₂ emission. In addition, a large amount of building and demolition waste is released each year. The concrete circle is not closed because the hydrated cement is not separated from the granulates which results in a porous material of lower quality. A better separation of concrete in its constituent components is therefore required. In this project, two innovative technologies are being researched and developed, allowing for the pure separation of the various fractions: microwave treatment of concrete and the Smart Crusher technology. High-quality recycling ensures that sand and granules are reused afterwards and that the cement can be reused as a binding agent. This innovation offers a solution for the growing number of customers who are looking for high-quality (concrete) products with the lowest possible environmental impact. In addition, research is being conducted into alternative and high-quality concrete applications. For example, fabrics will be used instead of steel to reinforce concrete. The use of textile reinforcement allows the production of thinner elements, which leads to lower material consumption, and the problem of concrete rot is remedied as well. For example, during renovation of the 'Vandermeeren student flats' of the Vrije Universiteit Brussel, the outermost panels will be installed with textile reinforced concrete.

It is estimated that more than 25 billion tonnes of concrete are used worldwide. The environmental impact of concrete production is high, since the production of concrete in addition to granules (sand and stones) also requires cement. This is not only energy-intensive, but it also causes high CO₂ emissions. In addition, a large amount of construction and demolition waste is released every year. The concrete circle is not closed because the hydrated cement is not separated from the granules, resulting in a porous material of lower quality. A better separation of concrete into its constituents is therefore necessary. This project explores and develops several innovative technologies that allow pure separation of the different fractions: microwave treatment of concrete, adapted breaking technology namely “SmartCrusher” followed by a separation in the various components. High-quality recycling ensures that sand and granules are then reused and the cement can be used back as a binder. This innovation offers a solution for the growing number of customers looking for high-quality (concrete) products with the lowest environmental impact possible. In addition, research is being conducted on alternative and high-quality concrete applications. For example, fabrics will be used in the place of steel to arm concrete. The use of textile reinforcement allows for the production of thinner elements, which leads to a lower material consumption, but also the problem of concrete rot is addressed. For example, the outer panels with textile reinforced concrete will be installed during renovation of the ‘Vandermeeren student cows’ of the Vrije Universiteit Brussel. During the first years it was shown that warming of the separated fine fraction (contains mainly cement) to above 700 °C is possible in a microwave oven. It is even possible to sintering the cement and thus make a cement that is equivalent to new cement. At present, however, this option is too expensive and technologically difficult, so that it is chosen to warm up to a maximum of 700 °C. This hydrated fraction can be used as a component of a new binder. It was also shown that heating of concrete in a microwave oven weakens the cement preferentially so that the concrete can then be more easily separated into the different components.

Wereldwijd wordt naar schatting jaarlijks meer dan 25 miljard ton beton gebruikt. De milieu-impact van betonproductie is groot, aangezien voor de aanmaak van beton naast granulaat (zand en stenen) ook cement nodig is. Dat is niet alleen energie-intensief, maar het zorgt ook voor een hoge uitstoot van CO₂. Daarbij komt jaarlijks een grote hoeveelheid bouw- en sloopafval vrij. De betoncirkel is niet gesloten omdat het gehydrateerde cement niet gescheiden wordt van het granulaat, wat resulteert in een poreus materiaal van lagere kwaliteit. Een betere scheiding van beton in zijn samenstellende bestanddelen is daarom nodig. In dit project worden verschillende innovatieve technologieën onderzocht en ontwikkeld waardoor zuivere scheiding van de verschillende fracties mogelijk wordt: microgolfbehandeling van beton, aangepaste breektechnologie namelijk 'smartcrusher' gevolgd door een scheiding in de verschillende bestanddelen. Hoogwaardige recyclage zorgt ervoor dat zand en granulaat daarna opnieuw worden ingezet en het cement terug aangewend kan worden als bindmiddel. Deze innovatie biedt een oplossing voor het groeiende aantal klanten dat op zoek is naar hoogwaardige (beton)producten met een zo laag mogelijke milieu-impact. Daarnaast wordt onderzoek gevoerd naar alternatieve en hoogwaardige betontoepassingen. Zo zullen o.a. weefsels gebruikt worden in de plaats van staal om beton te wapenen. Het gebruik van textielwapening laat toe dunnere elementen te produceren wat aanleiding geeft tot een lager materiaalverbruik, maar ook het probleem van betonrot wordt verholpen. Zo zullen bij renovatie van de 'Vandermeeren studentenkoten' van de Vrije Universiteit Brussel de buitenste panelen met textiel gewapend beton geïnstalleerd worden. Tijdens de eerste jaren werd aangetoond dat opwarming van de afgescheiden fijne fractie (bevat voornamelijk cement) tot boven 700°C mogelijk is in een microgolfoven. Het is zelfs mogelijk het cement te sinteren en zo een cement te maken die evenwaardig is met nieuw cement. Momenteel is die optie echter te duur en technologisch te moeilijk, zodat gekozen wordt om op te warmen tot maximaal 700°C. Deze gehydrateerde fractie kan gebruikt worden als component van een nieuwe binder. Er werd ook aangetoond dat opwarmen van beton in een microgolfoven het cement preferentieel verzwakt zodat het beton daarna makkelijker kan gescheiden worden in de verschillende componenten.
