Description (EN):

Marine litter is a severe pollution threat with environmental, human health, safety and socioeconomic impacts and demanding regional collaboration. CleanAtlantic addresses this challenge and aims to protect biodiversity and ecosystem services in the Atlantic Area by improving capabilities to monitor, prevent and remove (macro) marine litter. The project aims to contribute to raise awareness and change attitudes among stakeholders and to improve marine litter managing systems. A picture of current situation, existing knowledge, data and initiatives in the Atlantic regions will be drawn and gaps will be defined. Current systems to monitor and record marine will be reviewed, and protocols, tools and indicators will be delivered to fill monitoring needs. Modelling tools to predict the origin, circulation and fate of marine litter will be developed, and regional maps of hotspots of accumulation will be elaborated using models and innovative technologies for space, aerial, surface and underwater unmanned systems. Prevention will be addressed by developing best practices to reduce inputs from fishing and port sectors. Removal of marine litter will be tackled by implementing initiatives of fishing for litter, reducing the presence of “abandoned lost and otherwise discarded fishing gears” on the sea-bed, and developing best practises for routine beach litter clean-up by local authorities. Training and awareness activities addressed to various audiences will be delivered and project outputs will be transferred to competent authorities and key stakeholders to improve management and facilitate Marine Strategy Framework Directive implementation.

Achievements (EN):

As a result of human activities, marine litter has become a serious pollution threat with environmental, human health, safety and socio-economic impacts, requiring regional collaboration. The CLEANATLANTIC project addresses these challenges and aims to protect biodiversity and ecosystem services by improving marine debris prevention, monitoring and removal capabilities in the Atlantic Area. With these goals, the project analysed the current situation, compiling the knowledge, data and existing initiatives in the Atlantic regions. The results of this comprehensive exercise are accessible through user-friendly online products. The project assessed data management, monitoring and recording systems and studied marine litter impacts on fauna, through desk, field and laboratory studies, thus developing new monitoring methodologies and tools. The harmful effects of butts and cotton buds and the role of marine litter as vector of non indigenous species were investigated, as well as their economic impact. A model was developed to predict the fate of marine litter, assess the influence of river, land and ocean based sources and deliver global, regional and local maps of accumulation areas. To prevent and remove marine litter, the project organised training and awareness-raising activities, developed pilot actions, proposed best practices for reducing inputs from the fishing and port sectors and delivered guidance for the cleaning of beach litter by local authorities. Efficient coordination was established with competent authorities and key regional and EU stakeholders facilitating the capitalisation of results, the implementation of the Marine Strategy Framework Directive and the achievement of tangible impacts in the Atlantic Area. CLEANATLANTIC has strongly contributed to the strengthening of EU initiatives to protect and improve the environmental state of the seas, having been recognised in a resolution adopted by the EU Parliament and awarded with the Atlantic Project Award 2021 in the Healthy Oceans and coast Category. "The CLEANATLANTIC project has been a key partner for OSPAR’s Regional Action Plan, helping the Contracting Parties to develop and implement a range of collective actions. The CLEANATLANTIC team have led on some of OSPAR’S actions such as on the evaluation of harm from specific products, best practice on beach cleaning, and their database of measures and actions. Expected Results (EN):

• A number of technical studies and Marine Strategy Framework Directive (MSFD) related policy and operational instruments will be delivered to be used by public and private stakeholders; • Systems for monitoring and recording marine litter will be assessed and new methods and tools will be developed. The impacts of marine litter in fauna will be studied and current indicators will be assessed as well as their adequacy for the Atlantic Area through desktop, field and laboratory studies; • Models to predict the drift of marine litter will be developed, and maps of hotspots elaborated based on them will be validated by surveys with sea professionals, • Through pilot actions, model capabilities to predict the origin and type of the marine litter accumulated on the seafloor and coastal areas will be assessed.

Expected Outputs (EN):

• Current schemes for fishing for litter, for reducing abandoned fishing gears and for beach litter clean-up by local authorities will be reviewed; • Joint pilot actions, protocols, data management procedures and good practices will be developed and implemented; • Training and awareness raising activities and materials will be organised in order to capitalize results and achieve tangible impacts in the regions.
