Description (EN):

The digital economy is rapidly growing worldwide. It is the major driver of innovation, competitiveness and growth, and it holds huge potential for European entrepreneurs and small and medium-sized enterprises (SMEs). Unfortunately, only two percent of European enterprises are currently taking full advantage of new digital opportunities (EC Europa). From a market point of view, startups are totally different from traditional businesses. Startups, so-called born global companies, begin exporting their product or services within a couple of years after their founding and may export a quarter or more of their total production. The overall objective of the Atlantic Digital Startup Academy is thus to encourage digital startups (young innovative businesses with a high development potential, using digital and Internet technologies with a vision of competitive advantage) from the Atlantic Area to go international, the Atlantic Area being seen as a first step for startups to discover Atlantic area markets, to benefit from training to test their offer, and to start business. ADSA will thus contribute to the positive image of the Atlantic Area in terms of digital dynamism.

Achievements (EN):

For digital startups, the Atlantic Area can be the first step to discover new markets, benefit from training to test their offer and start doing business. ADSA project works on encouraging digital startups by helping to develop and launch their offer in international markets. Through a support programme including mentoring, training, networking, and events the Academy companies research new markets, test their products, develop know-how, and form partnerships that will be fundamental to successful selling in overseas markets. More than a hundred start-ups have been supported in developing and launching their offer on international markets. By following the fifty ADSA workshops, including mentoring, training and networking, the start-ups were able to acquire the essential tools for internationalisation and prepare for international events such as the Web Summit Lisbon or Dublin Tech Summit. These companies in the Academy are now ready to look for new markets, test their products, develop know-how and form partnerships that will be fundamental to successful sales, particularly in the Atlantic Area markets. The ADSA project has been achieving its ambition to implement international into digital start-ups and business organisations of the Atlantic Area. The collaboration between the business support organisations has resulted in a selection of best practices for startups internationalisation’s guide, which highlights practices such as preparation for fundraising or building a network in the foreign ecosystems. The partners with this experience form a concrete network accessible to any digital start-up wishing to become international: they will continue their actions of supporting through new ADSA actions like workshops, softlanding, events and study visits "As a fast-growing company, we are looking for new markets in which to develop our business. We wanted to participate in the ADSA program because we are particularly interested in the Irish and Northern Irish markets. They are ambitious markets and have a high demand for the latest web technologies.” Romain Schiano Lomorello CEO of BeAble.

Expected Results (EN):

• Criteria and recruitment and selection process: 10 start-ups recruited to the project per business support organisation (90 in total for the project); • Business health check and needs analysis for each SME: 1 business health check completed with each SME (90 in total) across all regions and 1 report of collated results/ needs / objectives completed; • Business partners: 20 business partners that will support the digital star ups in their internationalization; • Atlantic Area ecosystem: 20 improved projects in terms of market viability.

Expected Outputs (EN):

• Study visits: change in their attitude which will later, indirectly contribute to a change in the processes they use to support digital SMES; • Classrooms organized for business support organizations: Strengthening the skills and capacity on innovation of private and public business support and research organizations; • Structure the presence of startups over the web: 75 startups will receive support through the capture of their pitch on the web & gain visibility; • Ensure commercial presence abroad: 25 startups supported through "international volunteer in business".
