Main seafood toxins are emerging toxins, non-regulated marine toxins that have proliferated in the Atlantic Area as a consequence of climate change and which are harmful towards public health. ALERTOX-NET aims to facilitate market delivery of safer seafood products by putting at disposal of affected industries a new toxicity alert system for prevention strategies/processes across the value chain. This system consists of cost-effective, easy-to-understand, detection and alert methods, which will facilitate adoption by industry. Furthermore, ALERTOX-NET will recommend a regulatory framework addressed to public agents regarding emerging toxins, including tetrodotoxins, palytoxins and cyclic imines, due to their risks. ALERTOX-NET will have a bottom-up approach: from the “on-the-ground” demonstration in affected industries, to cooperation with Administration to adapt regulations to the risk represented by emerging toxins. The change sought is to provide better and easy-to-use detection and alert systems for emerging toxins so that industries will be prepared to detect those toxins, as well as Public Administrations, which will be involved in ALERTOX-NET, to get the directly required regulatory changes to adapt legislation. Moreover, the alert system will be also developed for toxins that are currently regulated so that industries which are not adapted, e.g. they are not aware of the toxins and methods, can benefit from better protected products for their consumers.

Achievements (EN):

The main seafood toxins are emerging, unregulated toxins that have proliferated in the Atlantic Area as a consequence of climate change and are very harmful to public health. The ALERTOX-NET project aimed to facilitate the market delivery of safer seafood products. For that, the project worked to put at the disposal of the affected industries a new toxicity alert system for prevention strategies/ processes across the value chain. This system consisted of cost-effective, easy-to-understand, detection and alert methods, which will facilitate its adoption by the industry. This replicable alert system of toxicity levels in seafood producing companies ensured the involvement of all stakeholders along the value chain within the Atlantic Area and beyond. It was piloted in 10 industries located in 7 different regions to validate its usefulness and feasibility. ALERTOX-NET also created a database with species incorporated into the food chain in high-risk products, to facilitate easier identification of toxicity by regulatory authorities, as well as further elaboration of public toxicity risk maps. This detection and alert method is proved to be effective, feasible, and easy to understand and will benefit industries providing a new and marketable service related to toxicity detection and prevention, namely the marine food processing companies on the Atlantic coasts, thus increasing their competitiveness. ALERTOX-NET also developed guidelines for the use and adoption of Prevention and Toxicity Detection Methods in the Atlantic Area Seafood Industry. Furthermore, the project recommended a regulatory framework addressed to public agents regarding emerging toxins, including tetrodotoxins, palytoxins, and cyclic imines, due to their risks. Expected Results (EN):

Industries: A new and marketable service related to toxicity detection and prevention at disposal of marine food processing companies on the Atlantic coasts will increase their competitiveness; Public authorities: A successful pilot study will contribute to the economic cohesion of involved regions; Research organisations: They participate in an ambitious strategy to enhance Europe's capacity to deliver smart growth and research and to improve the existing processes for knowledge transfer in the area; Consumers: One of the goals of the project is to protect the health of marine food consumers.

Expected Outputs (EN):

- A joint and replicable alert system of toxicity levels in seafood producing companies, ensuring the involvement of all stakeholders along the value chain within the Atlantic Area and beyond; - Piloting the tocixity alert system in at least 7 industries located in 7 different regions in Atlantic Area to validate the usefulness and feasibility of the toxicity alert system pre-defined; - Database with species incorporated to the food chain in high-risk products, to facilitate easier identification of toxicity by regulatory authorities as well as the further elaboration of public toxicity risk maps; - Guidelines for the use and adoption of prevention and toxicity detection methods in the Atlantic Area Seafood Industry, including policy recommendations for regulatory changes (namely for emerging toxins).
