Description (EN):

Currently there is no biomaterials pilot manufacturing ecosystem for translating concepts from the research-bench to pilot production readily accessible for SMEs + micro-enterprises within the Atlantic Area. The objective of Atlantic-Ket-Med is to create new innovation capacity by establishing an inter-regional pilot manufacturing ecosystem, developing human and infrastructural resources. The project will use the biomedical sector as a driver in the near term. In the longer term, it will help to establish productive systems for extracting greater value from the Atlantic biomaterials. In terms of impact, partners and recruited SMEs + micro-enterprises will learn best practice in innovation and competition through: the implementation of audits and analyses of technical value chains, respectively; audits will inform transnational partnerships in which inter-regional innovation capacity is to be developed; differentiated value chains will determine sustainable competitiveness for enterprises; gaps in value chains will determine priority for development of innovation capacities; new training and expertise in key enabling technologies, Industrie 4.0 and Scalable Innovation, facilitated by three workshops, will underpin the use of transnational pilot system components. Finally, it will also be developed access procedures for 25 separate processes in the pilot ecosystem and five case studies will demonstrate opportunities for pilot manufacturing.

Achievements (EN):

Before ATLANTIC-KET-MED there was no biomaterials pilot manufacturing ecosystem for translating concepts from the research-bench to pilot production readily accessible for SMEs and micro-enterprises within the Atlantic Area. ATLANTIC-KET-MED has brought new, high tech, pilot production capacity to the SMEs and start-ups of the Atlantic Area, using the Key Enabling Technologies (KETs) to produce next generation medical devices. A network of KET experts works directly with companies and other stakeholders to develop both a large scale strategy for the Atlantic regions, as well as case by case specific product development strategies for novel biomed products. This project offers direct support to companies with high potential to bring new KET-enabled products to market, to enhance their innovation management through innovation audits, product-specific value chain analysis, and assistance with product development case studies. Broader support also includes new training and knowledge in KETs, Industry 4.0 and scalable innovation, tailored matchmaking, and a comprehensive review and reimagining the Education Policy impacting the needs of regional companies. The project will continue to work toward the enduring growth and expansion of this ecosystem having mapped all relevant facilities in the area to define a strategy for future development of an integrated and complementary technical infrastructure, capable of realising the high potential of the KETs in next-generation medical devices. ATLANTIC-KET-MED had established and enacted a new type of interregional cooperation to enable the most cutting edge developments directly improving the quality of life for citizens and increasing the competitiveness of Atlantic Area enterprises. "Manchester BIOGEL was delighted to be one of the companies selected to take part in the Value Chain Analysis (VCA)process. Talking through our company’s product and process portfolio with the consortium definitely helped us assess our innovation practices. This led us to expand the application and reach of our peptide hydrogel products which is beginning to lead to enhanced revenue generation. Expected Outputs (EN):

- Establish and report on the reconfigurable pilot manufacturing ecosystem centred on biomaterials; - Mapping, 50 innovation audits will be conducted for SMEs, micro-enterprises and other public bodies; - 25 SME or microenterprise-specific, in-depth, value chain analyses will be completed; - Private and public partners will develop 5 new industrial training modules, 3 in KETs, 2 others in Scalable Innovation and Industrie 4.0; - Build innovation capacity by demonstrating 25 new procedures in partnership with SMEs for enhanced inter-regional access to pilot line resources; - 5 show-case pilot manufacturing case studies targeting 2-3 new product launches; - Interaction with 1000 persons-through social media and websites, 3 workshops across the regions, preparation of 15 publications. - 10 hot desk exchanges, 10 round table discussions to ensure financial, institutional and political sustainability. - Explore how the biomaterials manufacturing ecosystem can be further developed by H2020, evolving RIS3 strategies, and by other private investments.
