Description (EN):

The natural resources found in the Atlantic Area differ from north to south and a collaborative approach to study them as a whole is fundamental to adapt new technologies to the available resources. SEAFUEL aims to demonstrate the feasibility to power local transportation networks in isolated regions using fuels produced by the renewable energies available, such as solar, wind and marine. Isolated areas such as islands face the specific challenge of the high cost of electricity and fuel and their dependency on mainland infrastructures. SEAFUEL will target these regions where 30% of fuel consumption comes from local transportation. An alternative fuels model for islands will be developed to fulfil the requirements of the partners’ Regional Innovation Strategies (RIS3) aimed at low carbon economy and efficient use of marine resources. The project will drastically reduce greenhouse emissions, particulate matter and NO2 in line with the Clean Air Programme 2008/50/EC, and provide a pathway for isolated regions to become energetically independent, leading to future installations in the other Atlantic regions. SEAFUEL will focus on enhancing the green growth and blue economy and paving the grounds for common renewable energy policies to promote clean and sustainable transport systems.

Achievements (EN):

One of the main objectives of the European Green Deal is to increase the use of clean vehicles and alternative fuels, in order to reduce greenhouse gas emissions in 90% by 2050. According to the European Hydrogen Strategy, fuel cells can play a significant role in the decarbonisation of the transport sector by the implementation of hydrogen. SEAFUEL supports the production of green hydrogen using renewable energy available, such as solar, wind and marine, as an alternative fuel in remote Atlantic regions. In these regions there’s the challenge of the high cost of electricity and fuel and their dependency on mainland infrastructures. The goal is to demonstrate the feasibility to power local transportation networks and hence support the transition towards a low-carbon economy. SEAFUEL is demonstrating for the first time the production of hydrogen using solar energy and seawater, used to power a fleet of fuel cell vehicles in Tenerife. These SEAFUEL fleets are supplied in a fuelling station settled on the Institute of Technology and of Renewable Energies in Tenerife. The station and vehicles prove the technological, social and economic viability of using green hydrogen in transport. The next step is to scale-up both the green hydrogen production and the amount of fuel cell vehicles on the roads in Tenerife, and ensure the transfer of this pilot to other Atlantic regions. SEAFUEL enhances the green growth and blue economy and paves the grounds for common renewable energy policies to promote clean and sustainable transport systems. Expected Results (EN):

An alternative fuels model for islands will be developed to fulfil the requirements of the partners’ Regional Innovation Strategies (RIS3) aimed at low carbon economy and efficient use of marine resources.

Expected Outputs (EN):

• Development of a toolkit, which will be a guide to usability and practical application, available to download and to be widely disseminated through the seminars, the workshops, social media and the publications. The toolkit will incorporate the business model as a means of demonstrating the practicality of hydrogen and public transport. • Organisation of a series of seminars and cluster workshops, designed to discuss about hydrogen and public transport to be held with transport operators, fuel suppliers and authorities to share the conclusions of SEAFUEL and other hydrogen-based projects in Europe. • To attract the stakeholders in the first place, it will be produced 3 brochures, a virtual ‘online’ tour of the pilot project, hold regional events, 15 technical and scientific publications, 2 case studies, 5 renewable energy roadmaps and a website.
