Description (FR): Le projet SB&WRC vise à concevoir et réaliser 3 prototypes d’isolants thermiques pour le bâtiment à base de matières 1ères biosourcées et issues des déchets. Ces 3 prototypes seront réalisés à base de coproduits agricoles (tiges de colza,maïs, blé, et éléments de moelle), de déchets de textiles et de terre cuite, et de paille de blé. Ils présenteront une empreinte carbone au moins 25% inférieure à celle des isolants standards (ni biosourcés ni recyclés) présents sur le marché (type laine de roche et laine de verre). En cela, le projet vise à proposer de nouvelles solutions permettant, en exploitant des déchets et des coproduits agricoles de la zone, à la fois de réduire les émissions de CO2 et de préserver les ressources naturelles que sont les minerais de construction utilisés dans la production des isolants actuellement les plus répandus tels que les laines de roche et les laines de verre (la demande mondiale en minerais de construction a triplé entre 1980 et 2010 [OECD, Material resources, Productivity and the Environment, 2015]).
Le projet vise aussi à sensibiliser les professionnels français et anglais du bâtiment aux avantages de ces matériaux pour les inciter à poursuivre le développement des prototypes après la fin du projet en vue d’une commercialisation, et pour accélérer l’adoption de ces types d’isolants plus généralement. Pour ce faire, des professionnels seront associés au projet lors des évènements de lancement et de clôture, aux stades de conception (3 ateliers partenaires-professionnels) et de déploiement opérationnel des prototypes (4 évènements sur sites pilotes), via 4 conférences, une communauté en ligne pérenne, et une enquête en ligne.
L’originalité du projet réside notamment dans sa méthode: concevoir des prototypes en se basant sur l’existence de déchets et coproduits agricoles communs largement disponibles et sous-exploités dans la zone. En cela le projet est directement enraciné dans la zone et dans une logique de coopération transfrontalière.
Cette logique est aussi soutenue par la necessité de réunir l’ensemble des compétences/équipements techniques rares (valorisation des coproduits agricoles, valorisation des déchets/Waste House, Building Research Park, chambre climatique, etc) indispensables à la réussite scientifique du projet, et d’atteindre une masse critique d’acteurs à même d’infléchir les tendances du marché.
Le projet SB&WRC va relever les enjeux territoriaux n°1 et 2 relatifs à la zone du Programme par une collaboration inédite entre 4 universités, 2 associations, une PME et un groupe mondial dans le cadre d’une initiative de R&D dans le champ de l’efficacité énergétique du bâtiment. Le projet relèvera aussi les enjeux n°4 et 5 en oeuvrant à l’amélioration de l’efficacité énergétique dans un contexte de ressources limitées en mobilisant des ressources renouvelables sous-exploitées, notamment agricoles.
Read more Description (EN): The SB&WRC project aims at designing and producing 3 prototypes of thermal insulant for buildings, made from biobased and waste-based raw materials. These 3 prototypes will be produced respectively from agriculural coproducts (rapeseed and corn stems, with elements from pith), textile waste and terracotta waste, and wheat straw. Their carbon footprint will be at least 25% lower than that of standard insulants (neither biobased nor waste-based) on the market (such as glass wool and rock wool). In doing so, the project aims at proposing new solutions which allow, by exploiting waste and agricultural coproducts from the area, both to reduce CO2 emissions and to preserve natural resources such as construction minerals used in the production of the most widespread insulants such as glass wool and rock wool (global demand for construction minerals tripled between 1980 and 2010 [OECD, Material resources, Productivity and the Environment, 2015]).
The project also aims at raising French and English construction stakeholders awareness of the advantages of these materials in order to encourage them to further develop the prototypes and commercialise them after the end of the project, and so as to accelerate the uptake of these types of insulants more genrally. For that purpose, professionals will be associated with the project during the project launching and closing events, during the stages of design (3 partners-professionals workshops) and operational deployment of prototypes (4 events on pilot sites), and through 4 conferences, a permanent online community, as well as an online survey.
The originality of the project notably lies in its methodology: designing prototypes based on the existence of common, widely available, and under-exploited waste and agricultural coproducts over the area. In this sense, the project is directly rooted in a logic of cross-boarder cooperation.
This logic is also supported by the need to gather the full range of rare skills / technical equipment (valorisation of agricultural coproducts, valorisation of waste / Waste House, Building Research Park, climatic chamber, etc.) indispensable for the success of the project, and for reaching a critical mass of stakeholders allowing to influence market trends.
The SB&WRC project will address challenge n°1 and n°2 of the Programme area through a new collaboration between 4 universities, 2 associations, one small business, and one global corporation, in the framework of an R&D initiative in the field of energy efficiency in buildings. The project will also address challenges n°4 and n°5 by working towards the enhancement of energy efficiency in a context of limited resources by mobilising under-exploited renewable resources (notably agricultural resources).
