Description (DE):

IDEA ist ein Initiative, die die Vision und Umsetzung einer sich ökonomisch tragenden, funktionierenden Wertschöpfungskette basierend auf Mikro-Algen in NWE entwickelt. Beteiligt sind Partner aus NWE Ländern - Belgien, Deutschland, Frankreich, Niederlande sowie Irland - deren Klima sich untereinander ähnelt, aber von südeuropäischen Bedingungen deutlich unterscheidet. Die wachsende Weltbevölkerung benötigt erneuerbare, nachhaltige Quellen für Nahrungs- und Futtermittel sowie Chemikalien. Algen produzieren eine Vielfalt von Wertstoffen und benötigen dazu CO2, Nährstoffe und Licht. Für einige Algen bietet das NWE-Klima Vorteile, und sie können ökonomisch erfolgreich produziert werden (nicht für Bioenergie). Heutzutage ist eine algenbasierte Produktion trotz freier Gewächshauskapazitäten für den großflächigen Anbau nicht etabliert. IDEA schafft mittels Innovation aus den lokalen Nischen-Prozessen ein regionales, übergreifendes Prozess-Netz, dass bis zu den Anwendungen in der Nahrungsmittel-, Kosmetik- und Futtermittelindustrie reicht. Das interdisziplinäre Team von Partnern aus Forschung, KMUs, regionalen Interessensgruppen und Behörden ist positioniert entlang der Wertschöpfungskette und deckt von Algenkultivierung über Ernte, Verarbeitung (inkl. Bioraffinerieansätzen) bis zu neuartigen Produktformulierungen der Algen den gesamten Bereich ab. Innovation in IDEA heißt die Auswahl/Entwicklung von: (1) geeigneter Algenspezies für die NWE-Klimazone und Verlängerung der Kultivierung auf bis zu 360 Tage im Jahr; (2) einer automatisierten Ernteeinheit mit Wasser-Recycling; (3) eines Konzeptes zu Transport, Lagerung und Konservierung von frischen Algen; (4) einer regionale Algen-Prozesskette ähnlich der Milchindustrie; (5) über 15 neuartige Formulierungen zur Wertschöpfung aus Algen. Längerfristig wird dies >60 KMUs in der NWE-Region betreffen. IDEA startet dort, wo bisherige Algenprojekte endeten.

IDEA envisage le développement et la mise en œuvre dans le nord-ouest de l´Europe (NWE) d´une chaîne de valorisation économiquement viable fondée sur les microalgues. Les partenaires sont membres de la Belgique, l’Allemagne, la France, les Pays-Bas ainsi que l´Irlande – ou les climats se ressemblent mais diffèrent considérablement/nettement de celui d’Europe du Sud. La population mondiale croissante a besoin de nouvelles ressources durables en matière d’alimentation humaine et animale saine mais aussi de produits chimiques. Les algues produisent une grande diversité de molécules et nécessitent pour cela du CO2, des nutriments et de la lumière. Le climat du NWE présente des avantages pour certaines variétés d’algues dont la culture s’avère économiquement viable (à l’exclusion des bioénergies). Actuellement, et en dépit d’espaces de serre disponibles, la culture d’algues à grande échelle dans le cadre d’une chaîne de valorisation est encore peu répandue. IDEA innove, intégrant des solutions individuelles de production en une chaine de production viable à l’échelle régionale, ciblant au final les aliments, les aliments pour animaux et les produits cosmétiques. Une équipe interdisciplinaire sera mise en place, composée de partenaires issus de la recherche académique, des PME, de groupes d’intérêts et de représentants des instances publiques. Celle-ci couvrira l’ensemble de la chaine de valorisation : culture des algues, récolte, transormation de la biomasse (y compris bioraffinage) et formulation de nouveaux produits commercialisables. 1) les espèces d´algues adaptées au climat du NWE, et l´efficacité de la culture pour des saisons de croissance prolongée (jusquà 360 jours) dans le NWE; 2) le développement d´une unité automatisée de recirculation et de récolte d´eau; 3) le concept de stockage, la logistique et la préservation de la biomasse des algues; 4) des chaînes de processus régionales ; (5) > 15 produits nouvelles.

Description (EN):

IDEA envisions the development and enrolment of economic viable value chains based on micro-algae in NWEurope. More particularly, partners from Belgium, Germany, France, The Netherlands and Ireland are involved which are countries exposed to a similar climate that is significantly different from the south-European climate. The growing world population is in need for new sustainable resources for healthy food/feed & chemicals. Algae produce a variety of compounds via conversion of CO2, nutrients and light, and offer potential as renewable feedstock. Although light intensities and temperatures are lower compared to south-Europe, there is a potential for algae growth. For some species, the NWEuropean climate may even have advantages, and can be economic viable when targeting higher value products (not bioenergy). Today algae based value chains are not established despite free greenhouse capacities suitable for algae growth. IDEA aims to innovate and push the process development from individual solutions to a viable process chain targeting final compounds for food, feed and cosmetic applications. This will involve at longer term >60 SMEs in the region. A multidisciplinary team is composed with partners (academics, SMEs, sectoral groups, authorities…) active along the value chain which covers algae growth, harvesting, processing of the algae biomass (including biorefinery) and new marketable final product formulations. IDEA addresses innovations related to: (1) algae species for NWEurope climate and cultivation efficiency for prolonged growth seasons in NWE (up to 360 days), (2) development of an automated water recirculation, harvest unit & alternative CO2 resources, (3) storage concept, logistics and preservation of algae biomass, (4) regional activities for algae processing, potentially comparable to the milk industry, (5) >15 novel products formulations to targeting value generation. IDEA starts where earlier projects ended.
