In ganz Europa, insbesondere im NWE, wo die größten Festival- als auch Kulturveranstaltungsorganisatoren tätig sind, gibt es starke Bemühungen innovative Lösungen zu finden, um Ressourcen intelligent zu nutzen, nachhaltige Systeme zu verwenden und Emissionen zu reduzieren. Aufgrund des hohen Energiebedarfs und auch der Tatsache, dass diese Veranstaltungen häufig in entlegenen Gegenden stattfinden, wird die Stromversorgung in der Regel mit Dieselgeneratoren sichergestellt. Dieselgeneratoren sind jedoch mit großen Nachteilen, wie hohem CO2-Ausstoß, hoher Lärmbelastung, als auch Geruchsbelästigung verbunden. PowerVIBES hat das Ziel ein wirtschaftliches Energiegewinnungssystem für temporäre Festivals zu realisieren, somit die momentan verwendeten Dieselgeneratoren zu ersetzen und die aktuelle CO2-Bilanz um 20% zu verbessern. Ein Veranschaulichungsbeispiel: Wenn auch nur während den niederländischen Sommerfestivals der Dieselverbrauch um 10% gesenkt würde, hätte dies eine Einsparung von 1 Mio Liter Diesel bzw. mehr als 3000t CO2 innerhalb eines Jahres zur Folge. Das Projekt basiert auf einer Vertikalturbine und integrierten Solarmodulen. Zusätzliche aufladbare Batterien und ein Bio-Treibstoffgenerator garantieren den Nachtbetrieb. Dieses intelligente Stromnetz wird sowohl in entlegenen Gegenden, als auch im städtischen Umfeld anwendbar sein. Zwei dieser Einheiten werden gebaut und auf 16 Festivals getestet. Dieser umfangreiche Untersuchungsprozess ist durch die verschiedenartigen Festivals, im Hinblick auf rechtliche, technische, klimatische und ökologische Rahmenbedingungen, notwendig, um durch die gewonnenen Informationen ein praktisch universell anwendbares System zu schaffen, dass langfristig die Innovation in ganz Europa ermöglicht. Diese Energiegewinnung ist völlig sauber und nachhaltig. Deshalb kann diese Einheit gut sichtbar auf einem Festival platziert werden, um so die Aufmerksamkeit des Millionenpublikum auf sich zu ziehen.

Les festivals se déroulent partout en Europe et particulièrement dans les pays du NWE où sont basés les organisateurs des plus grands évènements culturels. Des méthodes innovantes pour l’utilisation raisonnée des ressources, l’emploi de systèmes renouvelables et la réduction des émissions lors de ces rassemblements font l’objet d’études poussées. Actuellement, pour fournir l’importante quantité d’énergie nécessaire, les groupes électrogènes diesel sont la source d’électricité la plus répandue. Cependant, la production d’électricité par moteurs diesel présente de sérieux inconvénients: l’émission importante de CO2, la nuisance sonore des moteurs thermiques et le dégagement de mauvaises odeurs. PowerVIBES vise à produire de l’énergie renouvelable de manière abordable pour des festivals. Le remplacement des groupes électrogènes diesel actuels permet de diminuer les émissions CO2 de 20%. En réduisant de 10% la consommation de gasoil lors des seuls festivals d’été des Pays-Bas, ce sont 1.000.000 de litres de gasoil et plus de 3000 tonnes de CO2 qui seraient préservés en seulement un an. Dans ce projet, l’association de turbines éoliennes verticales et de panneaux solaires au sein d’un système modulable sera développée pour les festivals d’été comme ceux d’hiver. En implantant ce système aussi bien dans des endroits reculés qu’en zones urbaines, l’énergie sera générée par des éoliennes et des panneaux solaires conçus dans des containers permettant une mise en service et une exploitation rapides. Les containers déplaçables de six mètres de long possèdent également des batteries pouvant être rechargées jour et nuit. Elles peuvent ainsi assurer l’apport d’énergie nécessaire. L’objectif à long terme est de promouvoir ce système à l’échelle de toute l’Europe. Cette production d’énergie est propre. Par conséquent, l’unité peut être clairement visible sur un site du festival pour atteindre un public de millions qui éprouve ce concept d´énergie durable.

All over Europe, festivals take the lead in finding innovative ways to use resources intelligently, employ renewable systems and reduce emissions. Yet at these festivals, diesel generators are still the most employed source to provide electricity due to a large amount of power needed. Using diesel to generate electricity has big disadvantages: substantial CO2 emissions, noise annoyance of droning generators, and bad smell. With the latest developments in renewable energy, for instance vertical axis wind turbines, more efficient solar panels, improved batteries, now allow for an efficient and economically attractive approach to produce large amounts of power from sustainable resources only. PowerVIBES aims to reduce festivals’ carbon footprint by 20% by making diesel generators superfluous. Instead, affordable and reliable energy is produced from renewable resources wind, biomass, and solar power. To illustrate, if the Netherlands’ summer festivals cut their diesel consumption by 10%, over 1.000.000 litres of diesel and over 3,000 tonnes of CO2 is saved annually. This project combines a vertical axis wind turbine, PV panels, and a battery, all customized in a containerized unit and with a bio-fuel generator as backup. All are connected in a smart grid. Two of such transportable units (with smart grid) will be built and tested on in total 16 festival sites. This extensive testing regime is essential as of large differences among festivals, as they operate under significantly different legal, technical, seasonal, locational, and environmental conditions. This process of reflection and feedback (with a loop of testing-analysing-adjusting-implementing after each test) leads to a (practically) universally applicable system, to be used in all countries of the NWE region. This energy production is completely clean. Therefore, the unit can be clearly visible on a festival site to reach an audience of millions that experiences this sustainable energy concept.

Expected Outputs (EN):

A summer festival needs 0,5 litre of diesel/day/visitor, so a 2-day event with 25.000 people requires 25.000 litres while the many 3-day festivals of over 60.000 people need over 100.000 litres of diesel. The annual demand of all festivals in NWE territories is 100.000.000 litres diesel (263.000 tCO2e annually). Winter festivals require on average 400 litre/day (f.i. to cool a skating ring). The about 500 winter festivals in the NWE region require 5.000.000 litres diesel (13.000 tCO2e annually).
