Description (EN):

Water is essential for human life, nature and the economy. It is permanently renewed but it is also finite and cannot be made or replaced with other resources. Freshwater constitutes only about 2% of the water on the planet and competing demands may lead to an estimated 40% global water supply shortage by 2030" while drinking water losses from ageing water distribution networks leakage within Member States vary from 7 % to 50% or more. (Blueprint to Safeguard Europe's Water Resources). It is the aim of SAVE-WATER project to address these challenges to preserve our resource base for life, nature and the economy and protect human health. More specifically, the overall objective of the SAVE-WATER is to increase the capacity of cross border infrastructure in water management by means of technology transfer and enhancing management efficiency. The expected changes that SAVE-WATER will initiate are: 1. Elaborate transnational and join-up approaches to respond to common drinking water pressures, 2. Produce state of the art sustainable technological solutions for robust drinking water monitoring, 3. Elaborate the effectiveness of the local administrations for protection, conservation and sound use of water resources and 4. Improve operational reliability and safety of water supply systems especially in touristic areas. The main outputs can be summarized to: 1. A transnational network and a protocol for common monitoring of drinking water demand and quality, 2. An information system and a prototype of a smart sensor and smart sensor networks for effective drinking water monitoring and decision-making and their implementation in the pilot activities, 3. A Transnational Action Plan and a Policy paper for joint strategies towards prevention and mitigation of risks and water resource vulnerabilities from natural or/and man-made pressures. The main target groups of SAVE_WATER project are: 1. Local population served by improved drinking water supply, 2. regional administrations and local entities, achieving efficient & effective management of drinking water resources, and 3. tourists due to the sustainable use of water resources. The project’s approach focus in i) the enhancement of drinking water quality against natural and man-made pressures ii) the enhancement of partners’ capacity to water management and iii) the sustainable use of water resources. The transnational approach is essential for SAVE-WATER since main causes of negative impacts on water status such that climate change, industry, agriculture and tourism have a transnational character, 60% of the EU’s territory having trans-boundary river basins. The originality of SAVE-WATER steams to the introduction of low cost smart sensors and networks which, for the first time, will cover very large transnational areas leading to the development of a robust monitoring infrastructure and decision making tool producing valuable tools with significant added value.

Expected Results (EN):

The expected results of the SAVE-WATER project are the following: the improvement of the monitoring capacity of the competent authorities through the application of low cost technological means (i.e. sensors in the existing infrastructures among other proposed actions) to reduce non-revenue water, against man made pressures and climate change. More specifically the expected results are: 1. Elaborate transnational and join-up approaches to respond to common drinking water challenges about monitoring and risk prevention via the coordination (networking) of competent administrative entities at different levels, the definition of common standards for monitoring and the realization and implementation of the corresponding database, the Information System and related services. 2. Identification, mapping and assessing the joint drinking water challenges in order to secure water supply; the activities will result to an action plan for a possible harmonized interdependence of the two countries 3. Elaborate protection and conservation of water resources through the transfer of smart monitoring technologies and the realization of a common decision-making tool for proposing optimum measures addressing reduction of non-revenue water as well as quality monitoring of drinking water. 4. Elaborate the effectiveness of the local administrations by setting up the sustainable management of water resources by means of best practices and the identification of socio-economic parameters. 5. Elaborate the effectiveness of the transnational administrations by means of legislation harmonization for cross border water resource protection and setting cross border strategies. 6. Improve operational reliability and safety of water supply systems especially in touristic areas where the water demand increase dramatically during the touristic seasons.

Expected Outputs (EN):

The following main outputs will be delivered: 1. A transnational network for recognizing, mapping and assessing joint drinking water pressures, 2. GIS info maps mapping water resources, supply, demands and pressures, 3. Protocol for common monitoring of drinking water demand and quality, 4. An information system and 5. A Database in order for past and future critical information for drinking water management, 6. A prototype of a smart sensor and smart sensor networks for effective drinking water monitoring, 7. A decision-making tool for analyzing flow data and water resources/demand identifying areas under risk, 8. Pilot actions for implementing the novel smart network enhancing drinking water monitoring demand and management, 9. A study of Best Practices in the field of efficient drinking water management, 10. A specific Transnational Action Plan for joint strategies towards prevention and mitigation of risks and water resource vulnerabilities from natural or/and man-made pressures, 11. A Policy paper for establishment a transnational cooperation network for knowledge and technology transfer as well as proposals of legislation harmonization for cross border water resource protection, and 12. A Portal for citizens’ awareness.The specific objective of the transnational networking has a main goal to promote a common transnational understanding of the corresponding drinking water pressures, main outputs 1 to 5. The specific objective of enhancing efficient management of drinking water infrastructures has a main goal to introduce low cost smart monitoring technologies and custom decision-making tools to the challenge of effective & efficient monitoring and management of drinking water, main outputs 6 to 8. Finally the specific objective of setting transnational Strategies, Action Plan and Tools has a main goal to promote effective & efficient cross border drinking water management addressing the transnational character of drinking water pressures, main outputs 9 to 12
