Description (EN):

The cross border region and especially the areas of Konitsa and Permet share the same natural assets. The sustainable development of tourism industry with respect to the environment is a key priority for the development of both the economies of Greece and Albania. The project aspires to cover the existing lack of certified extreme sports professionals. Thus, its overall objective is to boost thematic (adventure) tourism in the cross-border area by providing adequate training for new professionals and improving the quality of services offered. In addition, the project aspires to create a common culture and appreciation for natural and cultural resources that will be transferred by the professional guides to the visitors. The local communities will gain multiple benefits΄: sustainable development and environmental consciousness will be enhanced, the touristic season will be prolonged, the number of visitors will raise and new jobs related to tourism industry will be created. In order for this industry to develop and continue to grow sustainably a common understanding on the environmental protection rules and elimination of negative human impact/intervention needs to be reached. Furthermore, in joining together the efforts for developing and promoting extreme sports tourism, an economy of scale will be created, leading to lower costs (e.g. joint publicity & promotion) and better and more diverse services, thus benefiting all target groups involved. Finally the project will impact greatly adjacent areas with the ability to develop adventure/extreme sports tourism as it can be used as a raw model for the industry.

Expected Results (EN):

The general aim of the project is the perseverance and the valorization of the rich natural and cultural resources of the cross border area that will lead to the increase of the visitors and the increase of annual tourist stays. The Extreme Sports School in Anagnostopouleios - a building with great cultural and historic value- aspires to render a significant pole of attractions for trainees and visitors as it will offer internationally accredited extreme sports degrees. Climbing fields will be an extra asset for the cross border area. Their construction will valorize the natural resources and increase the quality of services offered. The integrated strategic plan will provide guidance and tools for further sustainable development of the area through the enhancement of adventure tourism. The summer camp will be a significant event for the wider area as extreme sports professionals will participate in the demonstration events. Athletic and travel journalists will be invited to meet the cross border area, cover the demonstration activities and promote the project aims and results. In parallel, the camp will focus on the young local population, including young sensitive groups. Young guests of the cross border area will have the chance to get familiarized with the world of extreme sports and meet the professional potential they can offer and the principle of sustainable development. The participation in targeted international thematic tourism fairs will promote the area internationally and will attract more visitors.

Expected Outputs (EN):

All the activities foreseen by the project are related to "tourism development of the cross border area". The main outputs will be: 1.The restoration of "Anagnostopouleios School": The first floor of the historical building will be renovated in order to host the Extreme Sports School. 2. A Study for the development of certified training programs for extreme sports professionals. The study will provide an analytical plan (from legal framework to study programs and an elaborated road map) for the founding of the Extreme Sports School. 3. The construction of 3 climbing fields both in Konitsa and Permet. 4. An integrated strategic plan regarding the promotion of sustainable adventure tourism in the cross border area. 5. The organization of a summer camp for adventure tourism. The summer camp will host extreme sports professionals in order to participate in demonstration events and a climbing contest will be launched. Young students and unprivileged children from local foundations of the cross border area will be invited to participate in the events in order to get familiarized with extreme sports. More important, the young participants will have the chance to meet alternative professional options. 6. Participation in thematic tourism exhibitions for the promotion of the cross border area as a single tourist destination. 7. Communication and dissemination material, video for the promotion of extreme sports tourism in the area and the project.
