Description (EN):

With a catchment area of over 97,800 km2 and a length of 926 km, flowing through 4 countries, the river Sava is the largest tributary of the Danube by discharge. The river Sava is an important natural ecological corridor, its importance reflected in the size and number of protected areas. River corridors, vital parts of ecological networks, are proved to be pathways of alien invasive species (IAS) expansions, demanding transboundary river-basin wide approach. Invasive plants destroy the natural habitats and the corridor connectivity, demanding increasing input into biodiversity conservation activities, at the same time causing damage also to water management, forestry, agriculture and other key sectors. The SavaParks network of protected areas in the Sava River basin, established in 2015 to jointly respond to nature conservation challenges in the area, has identified the spreading of IAS as one of key challenges, threatening the connectivity in the Sava River basin, mainly due to lack of cooperation of cross-sectoral stakeholders to find harmonised solutions for best practices for habitat preservation and restoration, lack of data to understand the extent of the threat of IAS and consequently lack of efficient common approach to tackling the issue, as well as lack of cross-sectoral, coordinated policies to efficiently tackle the issue. The Sava TIES project will address these challenges and develop a strategic framework for cross-sectoral, transnational management, control and eradication of IAS in the Sava River basin.Through development of tools, mapping and monitoring protocols, capacity building and joint development and pilot implementation of measures, we will reduce habitat fragmentation and improve the connectivity of the transnational ecological corridor. This will be the first ever attempt to tackle this demanding issue on a transnational corridor level in the region, with lessons learned bringing benefits to the wider Danube region and beyond.

Achievements (EN):

The SavaTIES project has been in progress for the past three years with the objective to develop an effective solution for permanent elimination of invasive alien species, and any organism whatsoever which is not native to a specific ecosystem but imported as a result of human activity. Invasive alien species are hard to manage, difficult to remove, and have a negative impact on natural European habitats. The losses that ensue from their presence are substantial as they affect not only the environment, but also the economy and public health. This project also included courses on the removal and eradication methods of invasive alien species which truly proved to be to the benefit of all the project partners, providing them with a valuable opportunity to share their specific experience and the know-how in dealing with invasive species. Intersectoral and international collaboration certainly contributed to building a stronger and closer connection within the whole transnational corridor, as well as a thriving future of the ecosystems which can be found there.

Expected Results (EN): Intensity of cooperation of key actors in the programme area in order to foster restoration and management of ecological corridors (survey based composite indicator)

Expected Outputs (EN):

The project’s main result will be the established coordination and cooperation of protected areas and other stakeholders in the Sava River Basin for better management, control and eradication of invasive alien species in the Sava River basin, contributing in the long run to greater connectivity and reduced fragmentation of this important transnational ecological corridor. The project will connect over 30 organisations directly involved in managing the protected areas in the project area - protected areas and relevant government institutions on regional and national level, while also establish cooperation with over 50 sectoral agencies active on local/regional and national level. Through the capacity building and training activities, 300 stakeholders (local communities, NGOs, businesses, policy makers) will be impacted, their capacities for dealing with IAS will be improved. Through pilot activities and awareness raising actions, over 500,000.00 members of the wider public will become aware of impact of IAS and what they can do to prevent the spreading, thus contributing to preserving the precious ecological corridor of the Sava River basin. This project will intensify the cooperation of key actors in the Sava River basin to foster restoration and management of ecological corridors, contributing directly to the programme result indicator.
