Todays’ urban lifestyle in cities is fast and very intensive. Thus, vast numbers of citizens and visitors actively search for places to relax from daily stress. Often, there is no time for “the escape from the city”, so they look for alternatives. Traditionally, they find them in urban and peri-urban forests (UPF). Their status of “green city lounges” is the main reason why UPF in PP Cities have so-far survived all urbanization pressures relatively intact (over 35 km2 of UPF in 7 PP Cities). However, multiplication of activities and ever-increasing numbers of citizens (almost 6,5 mio in PP Cities) and visitors (over 15 mio per year in PP Cities) put UPF under ever increasing pressures. Even if many of UPF are protected as natural/cultural heritage, inappropriate management, overuse and poor coordination between key actors plague most of UPF in Danube cities today. City of Ljubljana being The Green Capital of Europe 2016 composed the partnership in order to capitalize on its so-far achievements to present new standards in sustainable management. URBforDAN project aims to tackle actual needs and challenges linked to sustainable management of natural heritage within urban areas of Danube Region, which demand a transnational approach to be effectively resolved. This is why URBforDAN is designed to deliver a change in UPF management and utilization of ecosystem services provided by pre-selected focus UPF areas in 7 PP Cities. It is designed to restore current image of UPF and to make sure that UPF areas become places for socialization, relaxation, recreation, education, high-quality experiencing of natural heritage and green tourism for a diverse set of target groups. It aims to improve cooperation between key actors to resolve conflicts and improve management of UPF. At the same time, it aims to diversify and enrich “green tourism” offer of Danube Cities through new and improved services and products, accessible on over 700 ha of urban and peri-urban forests.

Achievements (EN):

Often, there is no time for “the escape from the city”, so they look for alternatives. Traditionally, they find them in urban forests. Urban forests are immensely important vehicles for the health and well-being of city dwellers. Moreover, in times of climate crisis, they represent crucial means to mitigate the effects of warming and to strengthen the resilience of urban dwellers to increased heat days. In the framework of the Interreg project URBforDAN (URBforDAN is short for Management and Utilization of Urban Forests as Natural Heritage in Danube Cities), the Project Partners set new standards in sustainable urban forest management. They improved conditions for land owners and visitors of urban forests, as well as shared their experience and knowledge with a larger UPF community of cities and regions, organisations, associations, experts, stakeholders and the interested public.

Expected Results (EN): Intensity of cooperation of key actors in the programme area in order to improve framework for research and innovation (composite indicator)

Expected Outputs (EN):

Main URBforDAN project result will be intensified cooperation of key actors through participatory development of Integrated multi-use Management Plans of UPF and joint development of new management tools – all leading to sustainable use of ecosystem services provided by natural heritage in Danube Cities. Participatory approach will engage key actors to recognize value/potentials of UPF and involve them in development of Integrated Multiuse Management Plans for UPF of 7 PP Cities. Based on established cooperation it will motivate key actors for muti-purpose use of UPF and support them in this through resolution of most pressing needs/challenges in selected focus areas. It will also develop and test new institutional models (A3.2) and management tools (A3.3) to support the first participatory management UPF initiative in the Danube region. Project will result in increased number of UPF owners/users actively involved in participatory UPF management and development of new services/products based on sustainable use of UPF services/resources in green tourism, recreation, forestry and education. Key actors will increase their capacities, knowledge and cooperation through newly established UPF Danube Network. All URBforDAN outputs will be jointly evaluated, up-graded and turned into Participatory Planning & UPF Management Guidelines, which will serve as a toolkit for the entire Danube region. The result will significantly contribute to the selected programme result indicator.
