Description (EN):

From the Alps to the Pannonian Plain, the Amazon of Europe is the largest natural river system in Central Europe. Amazing river landscapes along Mura, Drava and Danube will soon be protected as the world´s first 5-country biosphere reserve. Under UNESCO protection, biosphere reserves are model regions where nature conservation goes hand in hand with sustainable regional development. However, despite over 20 years of efforts in protecting the area, the 11 border regions of AT, SI, HR, HU and SR are underdeveloped, facing loss of jobs and emigration. Amazon of Europe Bike Trail will be the first project joining the efforts of 5 countries for sustainable economic development of the region based on valorisation of natural and cultural resources. We will implement a joint integrated solution for sustainable biking tourism in the Amazon of Europe while preserving the environment. To develop AoE Bike Trail as advanced flagship sustainable product and unique brand, 15 organisations from the area will firstly establish the organisational and information system, resulting in a joint bookable product with clear unique selling proposition of incredible riverine landscapes. Based on nature-oriented visitor guidance, existing single bike routes will be equipped with commonly designed infrastructure (resting areas, info points), resulting in more than 1000 km of joint Bike Trail along both sides of the Mura, Drava and Danube. Skills and knowledge of public and private organisations will be enhanced by their trainings on sustainable tourism within the AoE Bike Trail Academy. The essential innovative aspect is the valorisation concept, defining how the share of booking revenues will finance protected areas, resulting in fair distribution of benefits between the locals, visitors and nature. Thus, the project will implement the joint vision of living rivers for people and nature and establish the Amazon of Europe as a top destination in Europe for sustainable eco-tourism.

Achievements (EN):

The fascination of the present DTP project "Amazon of Europe Bike Trail" lies in its long-term design focused on regional value creation and the synergy of nature conservation and sustainable tourism. Although we are convinced that the Amazon of Europe Bike Trail will be a great success in terms of sustainable tourism, the proof can only be seen in five or ten years. Until then, there are still many challenges to overcome. One of these challenges will be to implement the digital marketing strategy efficiently and professionally. Only through successful positioning, differentiation and profiling in the defined target markets can a lead product, such as the "Amazon of Europe Bike Trail", trigger sustainable tourism in this fascinating transnational destination. And thus, a beacon for sustainable and independent regional development in the peripheral rural regions of Europe can be made to shine.

Expected Results (EN): Intensity of cooperation of key actors in the programme area in order to strengthen sustainable use of natural and cultural heritage and resources (survey based composite indicator)

Expected Outputs (EN):

The main project result is boosted regional economy based on developed conditions for sustainable biking tourism in the planned world´s first 5-country TBR MDD, so called “Amazon of Europe”. With this project, we will build on long-lasting efforts for stronger cooperation in this area. So far, these efforts mainly addressed nature conservation, while this project is the first one to jointly focus on sustainable regional development which is based on conservation of the TBR MDD area. The result will strongly contribute to the programme result indicator, since cooperation between key organisations will be strongly intensified, as it is the condition to develop a joint solution for sustainable biking in the area. To jointly achieve the result, it is necessary that all levels of administration are involved, from national ministries of tourism and environment, to regions and municipalities. Besides vertical, we will intensify horizontal cooperation between nature conservation authorities and protected areas, and representatives of business, RDAs, tourism boards, as well as relevant service providers, SMEs and NGOs. In order to create and promote a joint biking product spanning over 5 countries in their border areas, it is essential to establish strong cooperation with joint approach. Finally, we are strongly focusing on establishing long-term connections, creating green jobs within local supply chains and international recognition of this unique riverine landscape.
