Description (EN):

Project tackles common cross-border problems of low renewable energy share, energy inefficient public buildings, coal dominance in B&H energy sector polluting cross-border area environment, low share of green jobs in both economies. It addresses their root causes: 1. Lack of deciosion makers' institutional capacity and motivation to enforce effective solutions being unaware of EE&RES as most effective sustainable-development vehicle (environmental protection, energy security, new jobs, budgetary savings), and 2. Lack of public knowledge on affordable EE&RES increase methods Approach combines partners' proven expertise in EE&RES with new innovative solutions developed in project timeline. Investment alone is only part of solution, while key holders of outputs' sustainability are target groups, as individuals (students, teachers, energy managers) and institutions (authorities/utilities). Increase of their knowledge and behavioral change will ensure better energy use in entire society and more investment further increasing EE&RES capacity Main project objective is contributing to sustainable growth in cross-border project area by increasing EE&RES. It will improve target groups' capacity for better energy management, increase EE in school buildings and install new RES capacity, strengthen youth innovation capacity and knowledge. This creates 640 new man-month green jobs, 977 t annual CO2 eeduction and 105,890.00 Eur annual budgetary saving. Outputs include 7 energy renovated schools and new biomass-heating, 2 equipped school Solar Labs, 20 IT/technical innovation model/prototypes made by student innovators Project benefiits 29624 students and school staff, 41 local governments, dosens SMEs and utility firms. Jointly staffed cross-border Project Team will implement project through strong synergy of all partners' capacity and knowledge, and exploit future collaboration potential.

Achievements (EN):

After 27 months, the SMART SCHOOLS project finished their goal to raise energy efficiency in public schools of Brod-Posavina County in Croatia and Tuzla Canton in Bosnia and Herzegovina. The partnership showcased their achievements in a promotional video. The SMART SCHOOLS project introduced energy efficient investments and renewable energy sources to public schools in the cross-border area of Croatia and Bosnia and Herzegovina. The partnership’s idea is to increase school capacities in the field of energy management, raise awareness on energy efficiency, especially among young people, and present new and innovative approaches to save energy. Five partners – Association Centre for Development and Support (Bosnia and Herzegovina), Green Action (Croatia), Brod-Posavina County (Croatia), Tuzla Canton (Bosnia and Herzegovina) and Brod Ecological Society – BED (Croatia) – made sure that goals of the SMART SCHOOLS project were fully realized, and with added value. In addition to investments, partners organized an energy saving competition between schools, a Youth Innovators’ Camp and a solar festival. SMART SCHOOLS contributed to a cleaner environment and provided better opportunities to live, work and study in Croatia’s and Bosnia and Herzegovina’s cross-border area. SMART SCHOOLS’ main achievements: Energy reconstruction of 7 schools in Brod-Posavina County and Tuzla Canton. Participation of 105 primary and high schools with more than 38.ooo students and school staff in an energy saving competition. Training 42 energy managers in schools. Mentoring 19 young innovators.

Expected Results (EN): Energy consumption by public buidings in the programme area

Expected Outputs (EN):

1. Annual 628,511.00 kWh energy saving in 75 school and other public buildings - achieved by (a) management, teachers and students of 45 schools within large-scale cross-border energy-saving school competition, and (b) at least 30 newly trained energy managers, employees of public institutions (sectors: local/regional authorities, education, health, culture, sport, etc). 2. Annual 16,542.00 kWh energy saving - achieved by (a) 20 project area students, participants of IT/technological innovation contest, who designed and produced models/prototypes of their innovation ideas; and (b) students of two schools (one in each country) winning energy-saving contest, who received PV solar systems and equipped school Solar Labs by making various innovative solar items 3. Annual 1,676,696.00 energy saving - achieved through energy efficiency renovation works in 7 school buildings in cross-border project area, significantly improving their energy performance. 4. New technical facilities with total 661.50kW renewable energy generation capacity - installed in project area (652.00 biomass - heat energy; 9.5 solar - both electricity and heat-energy) 5. Citizens and other target groups educated and motivated to apply in their households /work places affordable measures and solutions for EE&RES increase. In summary, project results in: 977 t CO2 emission-reduction 105,890.00 budgetary savings 640 new man-month green jobs created (as per CRP green-job study 2015)
