safEarth will tackle the common cross-border challenges of landslide hazards in the region. It is a well-known fact that one of the consequences of climate change are weather extremes and flooding, which consequently leads to soil instabilities. Many landslide zones are located in densely populated areas directly endangering people and property. Given this high -risk, the aim of our project is to identify and classify those areas by designing and producing Landslide susceptibility maps (LSM), which is recognized as one of the priorities in risk management and prevention (Priority axis 2.1). The proposed partnership is composed by policy support and implementation representatives. They will jointly handle risks from landslides due to climate change and floods in the pilot areas through applied research, technology transfer, knowledge dissemination and small contruction rehabilitation measures. The main objective of the project is to use cross-border collaboration in order to mark the critical landslide hazard areas, thus creating preconditions for wider use, of LSM within the region, for better management systems of risk prevention. Recommendations for public authorities on local and national levels to use and capitalize this strategy for better land use management will be elaborated and implemented during SafEarh. The main outputs of this project will be production of LSM through concrete applied research that will be available online to the public. LSM will have practical application providing information to local government and citizens in areas such as spatial planning, protection of human health, biodiversity and nature. These maps are intended to be used before any larger investment by individuals, municipalities, private companies as well as big investments of state relevance. Due to engagement of different partners best management options for project topics will be applicable, LSM will be disseminated on a regional scale.

Expected Outputs (EN):

In safEarth, participating institutions will foster sustainable implementation of integrated land-use management, which will offer potential protection from landslides through creation of LSM. The results will fall into two main categories – thematic and communicational. Thematic: - identification of existing practices in the field of land-use management. - implementation of landslide susceptibility maps as part of a single disaster risk-prevention. - development and application of appropriate measures derived from pilot studies to enforce risk-prevention and mitigation of landslides. - preparation of legislative framework for integrated land-use management practices. - development of integrated land-use management practices regarding optimization of the use of space and resources. - long-term landslide protection through small-scale investment in infrastructure and equipment. Communication: - dialogues between national building and transnational stakeholder (local authorities, interested communities, end users, etc.) in order to reach a common approach towards sustainable transnational land-use and implementation of LSM into national policies and strategies -cooperation through joint forecasting and warning, which will rise local communities preparedness regarding occurrences of natural disasters, i.e. landslides. - sharing of the obtained data with any interested institutions; the data will also be made publicly available (internet, promotional material, workshops) for wider use.
