Description (EN):

In the Croatia relatively recently was spotted disease chestnut gall wasps that has emerged in the last two years also in Bosnia and Herzegovina. It is a disease that is rapidly expanding, has the effect of reducing the yield and facilitating the dissemination of chestnut and other diseases and it may lead to the extinction. In the cross border area is situated belt of chestnut forest and from that reason joint activities of both states are crucial in order to respond rapidly and reduce further damage. Through the project it will be undertaken a number of activities (analysis, research and application of disease control by parasites, making action plans and systems and measures for further suppression) that will have a significant impact on the problem. Project Main objective: Increase protection and risk management of chestnut trees in cross-border area Croatia -BiH through joint activities and promotion. Project will contribute to the study and monitoring of the disease chestnut gall wasp in the early stage in BiH and during the project when it is expected its significant expansion and observation control in the border area as well as the transfer of knowledge and experience from Croatia to Bosnia and Herzegovina. Project outputs are - measures for further actions and risk prevention system set up and protected chestnut habitat in cross-border area through project activities. Main target groups are local public, farmers, local government and relevant institutions, experts in the field of agriculture that will benefit from the project implementation. Cross-border added value of the project are joint initiatives to combat and establishing system against disease chestnut gall wasps. It is especially important to note that it essential to work on this problem together because of a forest belt chestnut forest that stretches along the border of Croatia and Bosnia and Herzegovina. This will be accomlished by project.

Expected Results (EN): Disaster response capability in the programme area

Expected Outputs (EN):

Project main result is Increased protection and risk management of chestnut trees in Croatia and BiH through joint activities and promotion. By implementing project activities and accomplishing outputs and project results it will be contributed to the programme result indicator. Contribution will be on several levels by accomplishing 4. Project specific Objectives. It will be on the level of increasing chestnut protection, increasing preservation of chestnut habitats, improving management of risks of expansion of the diseases and increasing knowledge on protection, raising awareness, and promotion of chestnut. All objectives will be accomplished towards targeted groups – farms, entrepreneurs, relevant institutions (Ministries, NGOs, Institutes local governments etc.) and public. Project will contribute on a national level to the protection of the chestnut forests and plantations which are in declining as a result of the disease and reduce the yield of the fruit. The results of the project will be the basis for the application of method of using a biological parasite and further protection of chestnut in both countries as well as neighbour countries in the future. As it is expected further spreading of the disease in future it could be assumed that the disease will be spread further what is a reason of need of fast reacting and reduction of the damage. Since this has become an international problem it is expected that in the future further measures will be on the Europe level
