Rare earth is used in electronic devices such as cell phones, computers or energy-saving lamps. Their availability is limited and there are no eco-friendly recycling methods. Therefore, the partners in this project are working with regional industry to develop applicable recycling technology that can reclaim rare earths from electronic scrap. The aim is to make this technology usable for the economy in the program area. The region benefits from the gain in expertise and the availability of a valuable raw material. The time-consuming and expensive extraction, as well as the scarce supply of these raw materials on the world market allows the prices of rare earths to grow continuously. Currently, the People's Republic of China has almost assured itself the monopoly on mining and trading these metals. Due to the constant technical progress, it is already foreseeable today that the supply of rare earths is critical and thus the expansion of future technologies may be imperiled. The project partners want to counter this development with a new technology. To fulfill this task, it is necessary to have an international consortium consisting of representatives of the Czech Academy of Sciences (Institute of Microbiology, AV ČR), the IMC University of Applied Sciences Krems, the Danube University Krems (DUK) and the Karl Landsteiner Private University (KL ). The mission of this consortium is to find a common solution for the recovery of rare earth waste, e.g. electronic waste. For this purpose, a never used variant is applied, the recycling with the help of microorganisms (bacteria and algae). In order to solve this complex problem, the competence of all project partners is necessary. The realization time of 4 years results from the long cultivation cycles and the reproducibility of the results. AV ČR and FH Krems contribute their expertise in the use of microorganisms. The AV ČR possesses the competences necessary for the enrichment of rare earths in algae. The FH Krems uses their experience for the same task using extremophilic microorganisms. Both organizations supply the rare earth enriched cell mass to the DUK, who are experts in the segregation of this material. The KL is responsible for the analysis (identification and quantification of the rare earths in the samples).

Prvky vzácných zemin jsou používány v elektronických přístrojích, jako jsou mobilní telefony, počítače a úsporné žárovky. Jejich dostupnost je však omezena a neexistují žádné způsoby recyklace, které by byly šetrné k životnímu prostředí. Z těchto důvodů si partneři projektu dali za úkol vyvinout společně s regionálním průmyslem aplikovatelné recyklační technologie, které by umožnily získat prvky vzácných zemin z elektroodpadu. Cílem je tuto technologii následně učinit využitelnou pro hospodářství v místě dopadu projektu. Region tak bude profitovat ze zisku z expertíz a z dostupnosti cenných surovin. Z důvodu nákladné těžby, ale i nedostatečné nabídky těchto surovin na světovém trhu, ceny prvků vzácných zemin kontinuálně rostou. Aktuálně si Čínská lidová republika téměř zajistila monopol na těžbu a obchod těchto kovů. Díky nepřetržitému technickému pokroku můžeme už dnes pozorovat, že se situace v zásobování prvky vzácných zemin stává kritickou, čímž může být ohrožen budoucí rozvoj. Tomuto vývoji se chtějí postavit projektoví partneři novými technologiemi. Ke splnění úkolu je zapotřebí sestavit mezinárodní konsorcium, které se bude skládat ze zástupců České akademie věd (Mikrobiologický ústav AV ČR), IMC Fachhochschule Krems, Donau Universität Krems (DUK) a Karl Landsteiner Privatuniversität (KL). Posláním tohoto konsorcia je najít společné řešení pro zpětné získání prvků vzácných zemin z odpadů, např. právě z elektroodpadů. Bude využita dosud nepoužitá možnost recyklace za pomoci mikroorganismů (bakterií a řas). K vyřešení tohoto komplexního problému jsou potřebné znalosti všech projektových partnerů. 4 letá doba trvání projektu vyplývá z dlouhých kultivačních cyklů a z potřeby dobré reprodukovatelnosti výsledků. Akademie věd České republiky (AV ČR) a FH Krems budou řídit expertizu pro použití mikroorganismů. AV ČR disponuje znalostmi, které jsou nezbytné pro obohacení prvků vzácných zemin v řasách. FH Krems využívá svých zkušeností pro stejný úkol za použití extremofilních mikroorganismů. Obě organizace poté předají biomasu obohacenou prvky vzácných zemin DUK, která je expertem v dělení těchto materiálů. Toto je nezbytné k tomu, aby mohly být separovány jednotlivé prvky vzácných zemin. KL ponese zodpovědnost za analytiku (Identifikaci a kvantifikaci prvků vzácných zemin ve vzorcích). Aby mohla být realizována zcela nová a pro životní prostředí šetrná technologie, jsou projektoví partneři v neustálém kontaktu se strategickymi firmami. Tak může být garantováno, že budou zohledňovány potřeby trhu a technologické možnosti hospodářství v programovem regionu.

Seltene Erde werden in elektronischen Geräten wie Handys, Computern oder Energiesparlampen eingesetzt. Deren Verfügbarkeit ist aber beschränkt und es gibt keine umweltfreundliche Recyclingmethoden. Daher haben es sich die Partner in diesem Projekt zur Aufgabe gemacht, gemeinsam mit der regionalen Industrie eine anwendbare Recycling-Technologie zu entwickeln, die Seltene Erden aus Elektronikschrott rückgewinnen kann. Ziel ist es, diese Technologie anschließend für die Wirtschaft in Programmgebiet nutzbar zu machen. Die Region profitiert hierbei durch den Gewinn an Expertise und die Verfügbarkeit eines wertvollen Rohstoffs. Die aufwändige und teure Gewinnung, wie auch das knappe Angebot dieser Rohstoffe auf dem Weltmarkt lässt die Preise von seltenen Erden kontinuierlich wachsen. Aktuell hat sich die Volksrepublik China annähernd das Monopol im Abbau und Handel dieser Metalle gesichert. Durch den stetigen technischen Fortschritt ist es heute bereits abzusehen, dass sich die Versorgungslage von Seltenen Erden als kritisch erweisen wird und dadurch der Ausbau von Zukunftstechnologien gefährdet sein kann. Dieser Entwicklung wollen die Projektpartner mit einer neuen Technologie begegnen. Um diese Aufgabe zu erfüllen, ist es notwendig, ein internationales Konsortium, bestehend aus Vertretern der Tschechischen Akademie der Wissenschaften (Institut für Mikrobiologie, AV ČR), der IMC Fachhochschule Krems, der Donau Universität Krems (DUK) und der Karl Landsteiner Privatuniversität (KL), zusammenzustellen. Die Mission dieses Konsortiums ist es eine gemeinsame Lösung für eine Rückgewinnung von Seltenen Erden aus Abfällen, z.B. Elektronikschrott, zu finden. Hierfür wird eine noch nie eingesetzte Variante verwendet, das Recycling durch Mikroorganismen (Bakterien und Algen). Um dieses komplexe Problem zu lösen, ist die Kompetenz aller Projektpartner notwendig. Die 4-jährige Laufzeit ergibt sich aus den langen Kultivierungszyklen und der Reproduzierbarkeit der Ergebnisse. Die AV ČR und die FH Krems steuern die Expertise für die Verwendung der Mikroorganismen bei. Die AV ČR verfügt über die Kompetenzen, die für Anreicherung von Seltenen Erden in Algen notwendig ist. Die FH Krems nutzt ihre Erfahrungen für die gleiche Aufgabe unter Verwendung von extremophilen Mikroorganismen. Beide Organisationen liefern die jetzt mit seltenen Erden angereicherte Zellmasse an die DUK, die Experten für die Auftrennung dieses Materials sind. Diese Auftrennung ist notwendig um die einzelnen Seltenen Erden separieren zu können. Die KL trägt die Verantwortung für die Analytik (Identifikation und Quantifizierung der Seltenen Erden in den Proben). Um die Vision einer neuartigen, umweltfreundlichen Technologie zu realisieren, stehen die Projektpartner in ständigem Austausch mit den strategischen Partnern. Dadurch kann garantiert werden, dass der Market-Need und die technologischen Möglichkeiten der Wirtschaft in der Programmregion in der Entwicklung berücksichtigt werden.

Expected Outputs (CS):

Očekávají se výsledky dvou tématických bodů programu: Založení stěžejního výzkumného přístupu k tématu zpětného získávání prvků vzácných zemin. Partneři využijí společně získané znalosti v nové oblasti ekologicky zaměřené fermentace pro vznik užší vzájemné spolupráce, která do popředí klade pravidelné pracovní pobyty a oboustranné další vzdělávaní. To zahrnuje výměnu pedagogů, studentů, společnou výuku a společné výzkumné projekty. Projektové výsledky budou společně využity tak, aby vyvinuté biotechnologické metody nezůstaly pouze u laboratorního použití, nýbrž umožnily zvětšení portfolia podniků v tomto regionu. Využití biologického konceptu „recyklace“ znamená zvýšení kompetence, zvýšení udržitelného využívání regionálních zdrojů a možnost vytváření pracovních míst v průmyslu, protože programová oblast zajišťuje v této oblasti technologické vedení.

Expected Outputs (DE):

Die Ergebnisse werden auf zu zwei Themenpunkten des Programms erwartet: Etablierung eines Forschungsschwerpunktes zum Thema Rückgewinnung Seltener Erden. Die Partner nutzen den gemeinsamen Kompetenzaufbau in einem neuen Gebiet der Fermentation mit starker Umweltrelevanz zur Etablierung einer engeren Zusammenarbeit, die regelmäßigen Austausch und gegenseitige Weiterbildung in den Vordergrund stellt. Dies umfasst Austausch von Lehrenden, Studierenden, gemeinsame Lehre und, gemeinsame Forschungsprojekte. Gemeinsam werden die Ergebnisse des Projektes genutzt, um die entwickelten biotechnologischen Methoden nicht nur im Labor nutzbar zu machen und so das Leistungs-Portfolio der Betriebe in der Region zu vergrößern. Die Nutzung eines biologischen „Recycling“ Konzepts bedeutet einen Zuwachs an Kompetenz, eine nachhaltigere Nutzung der regionalen Ressourcen und die Chance Arbeitsplätze in Betrieben zu generieren, da sich das Programmgebiet auf diesem Gebiet die Technologieführerschaft sichert.
