Description (EN):

The autochthonous dairy sheep breeds of the Pyrenees (DSBP), Latxa, Manech and Basco-Bearnesa, have a high economic and social value. Their survival is threatened by the presence of other breeds which are more productive, but with considerably more intensive production systems. ARDI will establish a synergy, under the new EU Zootechnical Regulation, among the different breed selection programs that have coexisted for more than 40 years. This will be done by creating a "Breeding Society" (association of purebred breeders), in order to organize the genetic improvement of these autochthonous races on a cross-border basis. Progress will be made, through the common management of breeding programs, in order to increase the competitiveness of the DSBP and to strengthen their settlement and explotation. ARDI will also seek to introduce genomic selection in the schemes of both border sides. This technology is considered the most modern for the animal breeding programs. ARDI will implement research actions, cross-bordering development and innovation, a common genetic assessment, a joint study on aspects that have not been covered yet by any of the schemes, and the creation of the common management body: EGTC. The project also includes sociological and participatory research. The main outcome will be solving the problems of research and establishment of the common management body, the implementation of the genomic scheme for the DSBP and the cross-border evaluations.

Les Races Ovines Laitières des Pyrénées (ROLP) Latxa, Manech et Basco-Béarnaise, ont une valeur économique, sociale et environnementale. Leur survie est menacée par la présence d'autres races plus productives, mais avec des systèmes de production intensifs. ARDI fera une synergie, apuyée sur le nouveau Règlement Zootechnique Européen, entre les différents programmes de sélection qui ont coexisté depuis plus de 40 ans, pour créer une "Breeding Society" (associations des éleveurs de race pure) pour organiser l'amélioration génétique des ROLP au niveau transfrontalier. On fera progresser la gestion commune des programmes de sélection pour accroître la compétitivité de ces races et renforcer leur présence et leur utilisation. On mettra en œuvre la sélection génomique dans les schémas des deux côtés de la frontière, la nouvelle technologie de référence dans les programmes de sélection des animaux. ARDI développera d'Actions de Recherche, de Développement et d'Innovation transfrontalières; une évaluation génétique transfrontalière; l’étude des diverses questions qui n'ont jamais été traitées dans aucun des schémas existants; et la création d’une agence de gestion commune (GECT) des ROLP. Le projet propose également une approche sociologique et participative. Le principal résultat sera la résolution des problèmes de recherche et la mise en œuvre de l’organisation commune de gestion ainsi que la mise en œuvre du schéma génomique des ROLP et des évaluations transfrontalières.

Las razas autóctonas de ovino lechero del Pirineo (ROLP), Latxa, Manech y Basco-Bearnesa, poseen un alto valor económico y social. Su supervivencia está amenazada por la presencia de otras razas más productivas pero con sistemas de producción mucho más intensivos. ARDI establecerá una sinergia, amparada en el nuevo Reglamento Europeo Zootécnico, entre los diferentes programas de selección que han coexistido en paralelo durante más de 40 años, creando una “Breeding Society” (asociación de criadores de razas puras) para organizar la mejora genética de las ROLP con carácter transfronterizo. Se avanza así en la gestión común de los programas de mejora genética, para aumentar la competitividad de las ROLP y reforzar su asentamiento y explotación. También busca implantar la selección genómica en los esquemas de ambos lados de la frontera, tecnología considerada hoy día la más novedosa dentro de los programas de mejora genética animal. ARDI desarrolla acciones de investigación, desarrollo e innovación transfronterizas, la consecución de una valoración genética común, el estudio conjunto de aspectos aún no abordados en ninguno de los esquemas y la creación del organismo común de gestión: AECT. El proyecto también plantea la investigación sociológica y participativa. Como resultado principal se resolverán los problemas de investigación e implantación del órgano de gestión común de los esquemas y de implantación del esquema genómico en las ROLP y las evaluaciones transfronterizas.

Achievements (EN):

Genetic improvement to conserve and protect milk production of Latxa, Manech and Basco-Bearnesa sheep: The ARDI project is coming to an end and to present the various aspects that have been worked on and the main results obtained. The importance of innovation in the agricultural sector was highlighted, which is being carried out through the implementation of new methodologies and the use of genomic information. As these breeds are so closely related, joint efforts are being considered. This would involve a move towards the joint management of the various genetic improvement programmes that are in place. This strategy will make it possible to share experiences and learn from each other, in order to increase their competitiveness and strengthen their development and operation. Throughout the course of the project, it has been possible to strengthen the connections between breeds through the exchange of genetic material and joint meetings have been held with sheep breeders from both sides of the Pyrenees. Furthermore, major progress has been made in the implementation of genomic selection in the Latxa breed and its implantation into Manech. In order to make the best possible use of the data collection effort, we have also analysed the best way to share as much information as possible and to be able to compare both production data and genetic values between breeds. Likewise, joint work has been carried out on the standardisation of mammary morphology and morphological traits and on new traits such as parasitism, functional longevity, and robustness.
