Biomass from agriculture has the potential to contribute to energy supply in a better way than today. Green Valleys will create a green platform for biorefining in the Kattegat-Skagerrak area. Only one to two per cent of bioenergy production in Sweden comes from agriculture, compared to Denmark, where the share is 34 per cent. Most of the bioenergy in Kattegat-Skagerrak today comes from forest raw materials, straw and manure. Biofuels from agriculture have found it difficult to compete with other and cheaper fuels. The project notes that better economic viability requires more integration of production with the production of food and feed, for example by using residues. The project will create a development platform for green biorefining in Kattegat-Skagerrak. Two test and demonstration facilities will be used: One in Aarhus (AU Foulum) and a small farm-based facility at Naturbruksskolan Sötåsen. Circular models and system solutions for the production of bioenergy using biomass from border land shall be developed and tested. The circular model also provides, according to the project, a sustainable and high-quality protein feed that can be produced regionally and reduces dependence on imports of soy, which is a feed linked to tropical deforestation and requires long fossil-based transport.

Biomassa från jordbruket har potential att bidra till energiförsörjningen på ett bättre sätt än idag. I Green VALLeys ska en grön plattform skapas för bioraffinering i Kattegat-Skagerrak-området. Endast en till två procent av bioenergiproduktionen i Sverige kommer från jordbruket, att jämföra med Danmark där andelen är 34 procent. Den största delen av bioenergin i Kattegat-Skagerrak kommer idag från skogsråvaror, halm och gödsel. Biobränslen från jordbruket har haft svårt att konkurrera med andra och billigare bränslen. Projektet konstaterar att bättre ekonomisk bärkraftighet kräver att produktionen integreras mer med produktionen av livsmedel och foder, till exempel genom att utnyttja restprodukter. I projektet ska en utvecklingsplattform skapas för grön bioraffinering i Kattegat-Skagerrak. Två test- och demonstrationsanläggningar kommer att användas: En i Aarhus (AU Foulum) och en mindre gårdsbaserad anläggning vid Naturbruksskolan Sötåsen. Vid dessa ska cirkulära modeller och systemlösningar för produktion av bioenergi med biomassa från gränsmarker utvecklas och testas. Den cirkulära modellen ger, enligt projektet, även ett hållbart och högvärdigt proteinfoder som kan produceras regionalt och minskar beroende av import av soja, som är ett foder kopplat till tropisk avskogning och kräver långa fossilbaserade transporter.
