Project’s background and cross border nature of project: Every product is uniquely identified by dimensions, weight, volume, sell by date, food allergy, etc (called product master data). Generally, different supply chain partners require a different set of data for each product – carriers are primarily concerned with volume, weight and storage conditions, retailers are in addition to previous interested in ingredients/components, colour, and size. Usually the product cannot be made available in the store to the final consumer before product information has arrived. Sometimes the product has been present for several days (in retailer’s warehouse), but there is no information or it is circling in the organization. This is due to outdated information exchange system in the supply chain – it is common practice that product information from suppliers to retailers moves via e-mail and Excel. Furthermore, lack of uniformity as all retailers require mostly same information but in different formats, making the process time-consuming and error-prone. Furthermore, as e-commerce is emerging, EU regulations are tightening and consumers are increasingly interested in reliable and convenient access to product data (nutrition, allergens, origin, fair trade, organic or not etc), there is an increasing need for a universal product master data exchange system. The problem and obstacle (of product master data exchange) is most apparent to programme areas small manufacturers, who operate near Latvian-Estonian border, and who wish to sell their small batch across the border to a large retail chain. This PanBaltic PDS solution removes that obstacle, enabling small businesses in programme area to flourish and achieve economic added value. Therefore, it is essential to take on Telema into this project, because Telema holds connections to 90% of key market players (large retail chains) in the Baltics, through its EDI system. Project’s objective is to simplify cross-border supply chain processes and data flows by developing PanBaltic PDS (Product Data Sync) in solving two important problems: 1) automation of product data information flow in supply chain; 2) allowing consumers to get important information about products (origin, fair trade, organic or not, nutritional facts, allergens etc). Project partners Project unites an EDI (Electronic Data Interchange) operator (Telema from Estonia), supply chain IT solution provider (E-Pasaule from Latvia) and a retailer (Eritrade from Estonia). Objective of partners is to simplify cross-border supply chain processes and data flows. Partners will achieve this (by combining their supply chain software development experience) by joint product development of cross-border PanBaltic PDS (Product Data Sync) solution. Partners expect that cross-border PDS solution will become a standard in the supply chain communication, ensuring simultaneous and large product expansion on both Latvian and Estonian markets (impossible to be achieved without cross-border partner). This will be achieved through partners’ existing EDI customer networks (90% of market key players) and other key players in the supply chain. Project’s activities are divided into two work packages – I1 “Joint product development”, which covers joint product development by partners, in collaboration with relevant stakeholders and subcontractors, and I2 “Joint marketing activities”, which covers networking, marketing, and promotion activities (including marketing strategy, marketing plan, marketing and promotion material development and production, marketing and promotion activities in press and social media, hosting of marketing events and participation at trade fairs and conferences).

Achievements (EN):

The objective of the project was to simplify cross-border supply chain processes and data flows by developing PanBaltic PDS for solving two important problems: Automation of product data information flow in supply chain. Allowing consumers to get important information about products (origin, fair trade, organic or not, nutritional facts, allergens etc). As a result, the project partners developed and launched Telema PDS as a PanBaltic solution for suppliers for creating, storing, and exchanging product data automatically with retailers. There has been explosive growth of e-commerce sales due to COVID-19 restrictions. Telema PDS allows suppliers to provide more information about their products to consumers for better purchase decisions. In addition to joint product development, the partners carried out joint marketing activities, which included marketing strategy and action plan development, marketing and promotion material development and production, publicity/marketing (blog posts, webpage, social media, etc.), organizing marketing events, participating at trade conferences, and visiting seminars, forums, etc.

Expected Results (EN): The share of entrepreneurs carrying out joint product or service development

Expected Outputs (EN):

SME enterprises from Estonia and Latvia will launch a unique new product with cross-border impact on Baltic states market, carrying out joint product development, joint product implementation and joint product marketing activities within the project and beyond the project period. The project strategy is directed towards following set of activities: 1) Joint product developed in cooperation – essential to implement expertise and knowledge of both markets. 2) Joint marketing activities for product launch and dissemination. 3) Inclusion of relevant stakeholders for relevant input, full supply chain testing and product dissemination. 4) Creation of new high value-added jobs in partners organisations. 5) Durability of developed product – measures for product marketing and dissemination after the project period, improvements in customer service by further product development and support (financed by revenue from new and existing product sales).
