Description (EN):

ADRINET is a comprehensive bunch of actions focused to improve a joint coastal management system and to create governance plans to preserve biodiversity and coastal ecosystems of the Programme Regions, which share the same issues in terms of pollution, over exploitation of fish stocks, illegal fishery, fish sophistication and ‘ghost fishing’ (i.e. marine litter and traps for other fish stock). The Project considers the sea as a (water) landscape in which fishery represents the ‘human’ component. For this reason, fishermen will be involved in activities directed to coastal environment protection, participating in sea cleaning campaigns, in study visits and in training sessions about the use of innovative methodologies. Furthermore, ADRINET will contribute in defining a common strategy and shared tools and documents (MoU, Protocol, ERMP, Handbook) in order to provide guidance on how to apply the various concepts of environmental and spatial assessment and planning in a risk management structure, focusing on fishing impact on environment. These tools/documents can be seen as a contribution that might be interesting for policy-makers working at different levels and scales. ADRINET foresees investments in technologies, endowing fishing boats with RFID and GPS systems to map fishing routes and ghost-nets (making their management and rescuing easier after the project’s end), monitoring sea pollution, tracing fish caught and preventing over exploitation of the fish stocks. Finally, ADRINET provides services, scientific support and skills for fishery's professionals and for consumers, in order to make fish consumption safer and compliant with EU rules and guidelines. ADRINET is conceived and designed in a cross border mode. This not only because of the selected topic (environment) which is a cross-border matter by definition, but also because of the partners involved in terms of competences (universities) and duties (PAs).

Achievements (EN):

A wide range of outputs was delivered by the Project, according to its methodology consisting in a bottom-up approach and in the coexistence of 1 scientific partner and 1 Local Authority (LA) in each Country to carry out the same activities. For, the same outputs were basically planned to be carried out in the same way in the 3 programme areas. The gathering of scientific data was the starting point and consisted in detailed reports on sea conditions in the project areas, in studies on fishing best practices, and in a ERMP (Environmental Risk Management Plan). All these activities were clearly linked to the need of getting up-to-date information to allow a better planning for the future. Every LA established a Centre of Reference for fishermen, as a physical facility set to involve fishermen and communities on the topic, allowing a multi-level approach on it. The result of the scientific activities and of the community empowerment was a Joint Coastal Management Tool, encompassing surveys, community maps, a protocol signed by PPs, and multi-language handbooks. The protocol was shared outside the partnership in the form of a Memorandum of Understanding to 21 further stakeholders. Three ghost-nets removal campaigns were performed in each country and a common traceability system was put in place through the endowment of fishing equipment with RFID micro-chips. All results are accessible to scientific and local communities, as they are conceived to last and to be available indefinitely (beyond project lifetime). All of them are linked with the Programme output, as they cumulatively put in place a strategy to increase cross-border cooperation on water landscapes.

Expected Outputs (EN):

Considering the specific programme result indicator i.e. ‘Common Plans enhancing and safeguarding water landscapes (including marine ones)’, by the end of the project, ADRINET will design and edit 1 Memorandum of Understanding, 1 Protocol and 1 Handbook, adopted by all the partners involved and communicate to other relevant stakeholders, in order to define a common, multilateral and trans-border policy for the sustainable use of marine ecosystems and for ghost-fishing tackling. Furthermore, also to improve the sustainability of the project, will set up 3 CRs where to share good practice and knowledge about integrated coastal management, conducting informative campaigns and implementing seafloor mapping and cleaning actions using the tools developed during the project. This way, both local communities and Public Administration will continue in the field drew by ADRINET and contribute to the reduction of water pollution and the preservation of marine and coastal ecosystem.
