Heizen&Kühlen machen 50% des Gesamtenergieverbrauchs der EU aus, wobei nur 19,1% davon aus EE stammen. In 5 von 7 Ländern in NWE liegt diese Quote unter 8,2%. Daher ist Heizen&Kühlen ein Zielsektor für die Erhöhung des Anteils der EE. D2Grids wird dies durch die Einführung eines bewährten, aber nicht ausgeschöpften Konzepts erreichen: Fernwärme und -kälte der 5. Generation (5GDHC). 5GDHC ist ein hoch optimiertes, bedarfsgesteuertes, selbstregulierendes Energiemanagementsystem für städtische Gebiete. Die Hauptmerkmale sind: 1) Niedrigtemperaturnetz mit dezentralen Energieanlagen, 2) geschlossene thermische Energiekreisläufe für den Wärme- und Kälteaustausch innerhalb und zwischen Gebäuden, 3) Integration von Wärme- und Stromnetzen. Durch niedrige Netztemperaturen, geringe Netzverluste und effiziente Wärmetauschmechanismen wird der Gesamtenergiebedarf drastisch gesenkt, sodass dieser bis zu 100% durch EE bereitgestellt werden kann. Ziel von D2Grids ist es 10 Jahre nach Projektende, den Anteil der für Wärme & Kälte genutzten EE in NWE auf 20% zu erhöhen. Die Einführung wird beschleunigt durch 1) die Industrialisierung des Systems durch die Entwicklung eines generischen Technologiemodells und Produktstandards, 2) die Steigerung des Kommerzialisierungspotenzials von 5GDHC-Systemen durch die Vorlage solider Geschäftspläne und die Gewinnung von Investoren, 3) die Demonstration der Technologie durch Pilotanlagen in Bochum, Brunssum, Glasgow, Nottingham und Paris-Saclay. Langfristige Effekte werden sichergestellt durch 1) Strategien, Machbarkeitsstudien und Pläne zur Aufrechterhaltung, Ausweitung und Einführung von 5GDHC-Systemen, 2) maßgeschneiderte Schulungspakete für Industrie, Fachleute und politische Entscheidungsträger, 3) transnationale Weiterbildung durch Einrichtung einer 5GDHC-Platform, die den Wissensaustausch und die Interaktion zwischen wichtigsten Zielgruppen bereitstellt, und 4) Evaluierungen zur Erarbeitung von Empfehlungen für EU- und nationalen Richtlinien.

Chauffage et rafraichissement représentent 50 % de la consommation totale d’énergie de l’UE mais seulement 19,1 % provient de sources ENR, et dans 5 des 7 pays de l’Europe du Nord-Ouest, cette part est inférieure à 8,2 %. Ce sont donc des domaines clés pour l’augmentation de la part des ENR. D2Grids y contribuera en déployant ce concept fonctionnel mais sous-exploité de réseau de chaleur et de froid de 5è Génération : 5GDHC. C’est un système de boucle locale énergétique en zone urbaine optimisé et piloté par la demande. Ses caractéristiques clés sont : 1) réseau à basse température avec des productions énergétiques décentralisées, 2) boucle thermique fermée pour l’échange d’énergie entre les bâtiments connectés au réseau 3) des réseaux thermiques et électriques conçus de façon intégrée. Grâce à ce réseau basse température, le peu de pertes et l’efficacité des mécanismes d’échange de chaleur, la demande en énergie totale est très réduite, et peut être stablement fournie jusqu’à 100 % par des ENR. L’objectif de D2Grids est d’augmenter la part d’ENR dans les réseaux de chaleur et de froid à 20 % dans l’Europe du Nord-Ouest, 10 ans après la fin du projet, grâce à ce concept de réseau 5GDHC. Ceci sera permis par : 1) l’industrialisation du système via le développement d’un modèle technologique standardisé, 2) une accélération de sa commercialisation grâce à un modèle d’affaires solide plus adapté aux investisseurs, 3) des démonstrateurs sur des pilotes à Bochum, Brunssum, Glasgow, Nottingham et Paris-Saclay. Les effets long-terme seront assurés par 1) des études stratégiques, de faisabilité pour soutenir et déployer le système 5GDHC, 2) des programmes de formation sur mesure pour les professionnels et les politiques, 3) la construction d’une communauté transnationale via une plateforme d’échange de connaissances entre les groupes cibles clés, 4) des études d’évaluation pour tirer des recommandations pour les politiques nationales et européennes.

Heating and cooling account for 50% of the EU’s total energy consumption, but at present only 19.1% of it is sourced from renewables, while in 5 countries out of 7 in North-West Europe the same ratio is below 8.2%. This makes heating & cooling an obvious target sector for efforts to increase the share of RES. D2Grids will do this by rolling out a proven but underutilised concept: 5th Generation District Heating and Cooling (5GDHC). 5GDHC is a highly optimised, demand-driven, self-regulating, energy management system for urban areas. Its key features are: 1) ultra-low temperature grid with decentralized energy plants; 2) closed thermal energy loops ensuring hot and cold exchange within and among buildings; 3) integration of thermal and electricity grids. Due to low grid temperature, low grid losses and efficient heat exchange mechanisms, total energy demand is substantially reduced, which can be effectively and securely supplied by RES, up to 100%. The objective of D2Grids is to increase the share of RES used for heating & cooling to 20% in NWE 10 years after the project ends, through accelerating the roll-out of 5GDCH systems. Uptake will be accelerated by (1) industrialisation of the system through developing a generic technology model and product standards; (2) boosting commercialization potential of 5GDHC systems through presenting solid business plans and attracting investors; (3) demonstrating the technology through impactful pilot investments in Bochum, Brunssum, Glasgow, Nottingham, and Paris-Saclay. Long-term effects will be ensured through (1) strategies, feasibility assessments and plans to sustain, scale up and roll out 5GDHC systems; (2) tailor-made training packages developed for industry, professionals and policy makers (3) transnational community building by setting up a 5GDHC Platform that ensures knowledge exchange and interaction among key target groups and (4) evaluations to draw recommendations on EU and national policies.

Expected Outputs (EN): The share of RES currently used for heating & cooling is around 13% in North-West Europe. A system based on 5GDHC principles is currently operational in Heerlen (TRL7), having an overall capacity of 19,440 MWh/a and serving a surface area of 200,000 m2.
