The Adriatic Sea is characterized by a unique coastal environment with significant potential for tourism development. However, this potential is not fully exploited, while tourist activities are mainly focused on a seasonal “sun, sea and sand” approach. Nevertheless, there are alternative forms of tourism which could prolong the tourist season, tap new markets and overall, provide the essential conditions for regional economic growth. Nautical Tourism (NT) is a dynamically expanded form of tourism, consisting an industry of high added value with strong clientele growth tendencies in the Adriatic Sea. In general, NT is seasonal, however, if combined properly with other mild tourism activities it may be prolonged with profound positive impact to local economies. Despite its high potential, NT is not sufficiently developed in the intervention area and its connection with the assets of the hinterland is insufficient. Hence, the overall objective of the Project is to develop a common model for the smart and sustainable NT management through integrated development plans. REGLPORTS aims to provide a holistic approach by (a) connecting the coastal areas with the rich inland’s assets, (b) emerging and promoting the interconnected areas (Area Brand, Thematic Routes), and (c) upgrading tourism supporting services and products. The envisaged plan will constitute an innovative approach in tourism industry, which cannot be successfully tackled by individual national strategies. The Project will increase tourism population, regional economic growth and therefore contribute significantly to the accomplishment of Programme’s result indicators. REGLPORTS foresees to facilitate the sustainable NT management, considering as a top priority the environmental sustainability. The anticipated impact will substantially benefit stakeholders in the intervention area, including local communities, national and/or regional organizations and tourism related businesses.

Achievements (EN):

E-Learning Platform: The REGLPORTS Project focuses on the development of a common model and plan for the enhancement of nautical tourism. In particular, the Project favors the development of Nautical Tourism in the small and medium-sized ports of the intervention area. It also aims to connect the selected ports with the hinterland, through alternative tourism activities, linked to natural and cultural assets, sports and recreational activities, archaeological sites and historical monuments, as well as gastronomy, religion and culture. The main result is to facilitate the management of smart and sustainable tourism, thus stimulating financial growth and reducing unemployment. The E-Learning Platform is one of the tools produced during the REGLPORTS Project. It is also aimed to tourism professiionals which are located remotely in order to communicate them all the training material, suggestions and best practices of their professional field. The impact from the envisaged training process is expected to be positive in local and regional scale, as public will actively contribute to the implementation of REGLPORTS approach and acquire new skills that could potentially open new professional opportunities or evolve and upgrade their professional business. The training material provides comprehensive course packages to deliver professional knowledge in regards to tourism, with a focus on nautical tourism and its potential development. Our E-Learning Platform is up and running and loaded with the first training material. More to come. https://reglports.eu/elearning/ REGLPORTS web-GIS: The web-GIS system is an interactive tool for the recorded information, thematic routes and data. The GIS application is embracing a detailed Geodatabase with all the available information and material (e.g. photos). You can explore it more here: reglports-gis.eu The REGLPORTS web-GIS system was designed with a user-friendly interface, including: an interactive Geodatabase with all the available information (characteristics, photos etc) acquired by (a) D.T1.1.1 “Assessment and analysis of current conditions for Nautical Tourism in the intervention area” and, (b) the developed REGLPORTS Thematic Routes (D.T1.2.1). As all the Smart ICT tools, it aims to significantly upgrade the offered tourism services and facilities. REGLPORTS THEMATIC ROUTES: The Adriatic Sea is characterized by a unique coastal environment with significant potential for tourism development. REGLPORTS while emphasizing on Nautical Tourism (NT), seeks to exploit the high tourism potential of the intervention area in 21 small and medium-sized ports (12 in Italy, 4 in Albania and 5 in Montenegro). Simultaneously, it aims to link the selected ports with alternative tourism activities related to inland’s natural and cultural assets, including areas of high aesthetic and ecological value, sports and leisure activities, historical monuments and archaeological sites, as well as multiple thematic destinations focused on gastronomy, religion and culture. Here comes the careful planning of the REGLPORTS Thematic Routes. The Study for the Development of the REGLPORTS Thematic Routes provided some interesting results per participating country. A case in point is the Municipality of Molfetta which hosts a busy fishing and commercial port, with significant potential for the development of Nautical Tourism. The port of Molfetta offers a great opportunity for its advancement in terms of tourism advancement and economic growth. The Municipality of Molfetta has established four captivating Thematic Routes for the visitors. One of the suggested routes encourages the visitor to tour along the coastal road from Giovinazzo to Margherita di Savoia, aka the Along the Adriatic route. By car the whole route takes approximately 1,5 hr with a plethora of things to see and visit along the way. The first stop is the maritime town of Giovinazzo in the province of Bari. Then there is Molfetta located in the northern side of the Metropolitan City of Bari. Only 10km north of Molfetta there is the town of Bisceglie with its awarded beaches, such as Scallette and Salsello. Further north (~9 km) following the suggested route, there is the town of Trani, the so called “Pearl of the Adriatic”. The next stop in the suggested route is the town of Barletta, with a port originating back in the early 4th century BC. The final stop on the route is the town of Margherita di Savoia, with its famous salt pans.

Expected Results (EN): Common action Plans for the smart management of tourist destinations to be adopted by the public authorities of the Programme area.

Expected Outputs (EN):

REGLPORTS’ main results are anticipated to enhance smart and sustainable tourism management in the intervention area, through the development of NT. The foreseen development plan will constitute a holistic framework for tourism development in the entire intervention area; however, it will be constituted by customized individual plans that will embrace the specific territorial characteristics, demands and stresses of the involved regions (ports and related inland). It is evident that the Project’s main results including all the available studies, models, tools (IDS, PMS, web-based GIS) and applications, could be easily adopted and capitalized on by the local/regional/national stakeholders and public authorities, during and after the end of the Project (through Centers and Networks); hence, they significantly contribute to the achievement of the Result Indicator 2. 1.
