Air transport in the Adriatic region is evolving from year to year, but however, the problem of intraregional connectivity prevails. New air links within the Adriatic region could considerably improve mobility and accelerate economic integration and cooperation processes. Moreover it is important to note that airports like cities are never static. They are constantly evolving in form and function. Historically, airports have been understood as places where aircraft operate, including runways, control towers, terminals, hangers and other facilities which directly serve aircraft, passengers and cargo. This traditional understanding is giving way to much broader vision: in addition to their core infrastructures and services, airports should be developed significant non-aeronautical facilities and services, as extending their commercial reach and economic impact well beyond airport boundaries. The project wants to establish direct air connections in the Programme area that can contribute, on one hand, to generate new opportunities of socio-economic development in a short time and, on the other hand, to pull down barriers for the circulation of people, in order to strengthen the economical growth and encourage the cooperation in the Adriatic basin. Project’s overall objective focuses on the development of sustainable cross border connectivity by an integrated transport model, able to increase multimodality and accessibility to airports. ON CLOUD NINE aims to improve the accessibility and the mobility of passengers across the Programme area, through the development and the improvement of new cross border, sustainable and integrated transport solutions: 2 air routes among Programme airports, new services aimed at travellers, as well as improvements in the connections at urban and interregional level, with 1 multimodal route. All these project outputs ameliorate travel experience of passengers that can become happy and perfectly satisfied (i.e. really “on cloud nine”).

Expected Results (EN): Agreements for cross-border passengers and freight sustainable transport systems and multimodal mobility solutions

Expected Outputs (EN):

Sustainable development focuses on how transport needs and environmental impact of satisfying transport needs can be reduced without adversely affecting the satisfaction of people's natural needs. With increasing leisure time and disposable income, the globalized economy generates needs for travelling to destinations located outlying of the residence of travellers, with an increasing proportion of flight transport. This change of course has increased to a similar extent in travel demand between cities and their respective airports as well. Therefore, it is necessary to deal with adequate air transport connections in the Programme area and also among each airport and its neighbouring areas, to create an harmonious development of airports. New multimodal transport solutions for passengers can produce as result a development in term of sustainability, mobility and economy, favouring cooperation among different stakeholders involved (airports, public authorities, SMEs and so on).
