The aim of the project is to create more habitats and a greater food supply for pollinating insects. The aim is for the landscape of Lake Constance to be rich in species and blooms again, and become a show region in terms of blooming countryside. Blossom-visiting insects such as honey bees, wild bees and butterflies have a central role in our ecosystems. 80% of flowering plants and crops are dependent on their pollination. The economic value of pollination in Europe is estimated to be €22 billion per annum. However, the living conditions of flower-visiting insects have declined sharply in the last few decades. It is not only the stocks of honey bees that are decreasing, but wild pollinating insects are also under threat. On Germany’s red list, 52% of 560 species of wild bee and more than half of the 190 species of butterfly are classified as being under threat. In Central Europe, between 25% and 68% of all species of wild bee are at risk. One of the main reasons is the drastic decline in habitats and food supplies. The countryside is becoming increasingly green and lacking in blooms, in the Lake Constance area too. Increasing land usage and intensifying agriculture barely allow plants any more time and space to bloom. Since 2012, the Lake Constance foundation has been organising an annual cross-border exchange of experiences in order to increase knowledge transfer between the parties and encourage international cooperation. New ideas have emerged from this about how more habitats and food supplies can be created in the Lake Constance region. The aim of the project is to create more habitats and a greater food supply for pollinating insects. The Lake Constance countryside is to become rich in species and blooms once again. The cross-border challenge lies in better linking of the existing regional initiatives and environmental players around Lake Constance, and informing important target groups such as municipalities, farms, schools and architects / planners / property developers, based on jointly developed concepts, as well as encouraging the creation of areas that are richer in blooms, in addition to conveying knowledge. Based on information, motivation and practical instructions for the target groups of municipalities, farmers, schools and nature educationalists, planners / architects / property developers, as well as the broad public, communal, agricultural and private land can be cultivated to become insect-friendlier and made more diverse. In this way, not only will insects be encouraged, but a landscape will be established that is richer in species, and where habitats and ecosystems can be stabilised and made stronger overall. The measures are: Survey / information and exchange of experiences between municipalities, developing knowledge on rendering public spaces in harmony with nature, training of bloom ambassadors, courses on the benefits of bees in farming, establishing grassland working groups for agriculture, creating a bee educational package and setting up bee awareness-raising working groups, symposiums / workshops for planners / architects / property developers, information and public relations measures.

Das Projektziel besteht darin, mehr Lebensräume und ein größeres Nahrungsangebot für bestäubende Insekten zu schaffen. Die Bodenseelandschaft soll wieder arten- und blütenreicher werden und zu einer Vorzeige-Region in Sachen blühende Landschaft werden. Blütenbesuchende Insekten wie Honigbienen, Wildbienen, Schmetterlinge haben eine zentrale Funktion in unseren Ökosystemen. Auf ihre Bestäubung sind 80% der Blütenpflanzen und Feldfrüchte angewiesen. Der ökonomische Wert der Bestäubung in Europa wird auf 22 Mrd. € pro Jahr beziffert. Die Lebensbedingungen der Blütenbesucher haben sich in den letzten Jahrzehnten jedoch stark verschlechtert. Nicht nur die Bestände der Honigbiene verringern sich, auch die der wildlebenden Bestäuber sind gefährdet. So werden in der Roten Liste Deutschland 52% der 560 Wildbienenarten und über die Hälfte der 190 Tagfalterarten als gefährdet klassifiziert. In Mitteleuropa sind zwischen 25% und 68% aller Wildbienenarten gefährdet. Einer der Hauptgründe ist der drastische Rückgang an Lebensräumen und Nahrungsangeboten. Auch in der Bodenseeregion wird die Landschaft immer grüner und blütenärmer. Wachsender Flächenverbrauch und die intensiver werdende Landwirtschaft lassen den Pflanzen kaum mehr Zeit und Raum zum Blühen. Bereits seit 2012 organisiert die Bodensee-Stiftung jährlich einen grenzüberschreitenden Erfahrungsaustausch, um de Wissenstransfer zwischen Akteuren zu stärken und die internationale Zusammenarbeit zu fördern. Daraus sind neue Ideen hervorgegangen, wie man in der Bodenseeregion mehr Lebensräume und Nahrungsangebote schaffen kann. Das Projektziel besteht darin, mehr Lebensräume und ein größeres Nahrungsangebot für bestäubende Insekten zu schaffen. Die Bodenseelandschaft soll wieder arten- und blütenreicher werden. Die grenzüberschreitende Herausforderung liegt darin, die bestehenden Regionalinitiativen und Umweltbildungsakteuren rund um den Bodensee stärker miteinander zu verknüpfen und wichtige Zielgruppen wie Kommunen, Landwirte, Schulen und Architekten/Plandende/Bauträgerschaft auf der Basis gemeinsam entwickelter Konzepte zu informieren und für eine blütenreichere Flächengestaltung zu motivieren und Wissen zu vermitteln. Durch Information, Motivation und praktische Anleitung für die Zielgruppen Kommunen, Landwirtschaft, Schulen und Naturpädagogen, Planer/Architekten/Bauträger, Imker- und Naturschutzorganisationen sowie die breite Öffentlichkeit werden kommunale, landwirtschaftliche und privaten Flächen insektenfreundlicher bewirtschaftet und vielfältiger gestaltet. So werden nicht nur Insekten gefördert, sondern auch eine artenreiche Landschaft etabliert und Habitate und Ökosysteme ingesamt stabilisiert und gestärkt. Die Maßnahmen sind: Befragung/Information und Erfahrungsaustausch von Kommunen, Wissensaufbau zur naturnahen Gestaltung öffentlicher Flächen, Ausbildung von Blüh-Botschaftern, Bauernbienen-Kurse, Etablierung einer Grünland-AG für die Landwirtschaft, Schaffung eines Bienen-Schul-Pakets und Etablierung von Bienen-machen-Schule-AGs, Fachtagung/Workshops für Planer/Architekten/Bauträger, Information- und Öffentlichkeitsarbeit.

The living conditions of insects have deteriorated sharply in recent decades. The aim of the project was therefore to create more habitats and a greater food supply for pollinating insects. By attracting, informing, further training and advising stakeholders who actively work together with nature conservation on their land for bee- and insect-friendly management and care, land will be managed more insect-friendly and more diverse in the future. The project “Blühendes Bodenseeland” was aimed not only at the relevant professional audience, but also for actors from agriculture, municipal administration and the construction industry. Children, adolescents and other interested parties who wanted to learn about the necessity and possibility of a flourishing landscape were also addressed. For the “professional public”, whose field of work has (potential) effects on the living conditions of flower-visiting insects, the communication aimed on raising awareness of these effects and, on the other hand, to show practical possibilities for action by exchanging experiences. As part of excursions, through the preparation and publication of exemplary activities and lectures at specialist events, an intensive dialogue on sustainable agriculture, community engagement for flower-seeker insects and biodiversity was initiated or continued. To this end, the organisation of own events, such as the cooperation with the association Melifera and the event “Bees make school”, which is aimed at educators. This was particularly successful in Vorarlberg, where most cities and municipalities now participate in the program “natural — colorful and species-rich” and upgrade specific areas in public space. For the target group “general public” two offers were central: On the one hand, an attractive travelling exhibition was created (besides a project brochure and the website). The exhibition was also diligently borrowed and was exhibited in numerous council or district houses and was exhibited at numerous events. Another special offer was the opportunity to take part in “flower ambassador courses”. The concept has already been implemented in Vorarlberg in recent years and has now been further developed and tested in the Allgäu. “Blood ambassadors” are people who work in a personal environment for a flourishing landscape and flower-seeking insects: from the conversation about the neighboring fence, the transformation of their own garden to the “political action” in their own city or community. These courses were extremely successful and the concept will be further developed and expanded in the coming years. The presently about 50 flower ambassadors have already initiated small projects ranging from the installation of a flowering area at the local school to the initiation of neighbourly sponsorships for smaller public green spaces to considerations for a GIS-based survey of public green spaces in municipalities that want to systematically upgrade their green spaces. As a permanently available offer, the “Building Nature Diversity Knowledge Pool” was developed as part of the project: (https://naturvielfaltbauen.org/2018/12/natur-vielfalt-bauen-wissenspool-bodenseeregion/ ), which will also be further developed in the future.

Die Lebensbedingungen von Insekten haben sich in den letzten Jahrzehnten stark verschlechtert. Ziel des Projektes war es daher, mehr Lebensräume und ein größeres Nahrungsangebot für bestäubende Insekten zu schaffen. Durch die Gewinnung, Information, Weiterbildung und Beratung von Akteuren, die sich gemeinsame mit dem Naturschutz aktiv auf ihren Flächen für eine bienen- und insektenfreundliche Bewirtschaftung und Pflege einsetzen, sollen künftig Flächen insektenfreundlicher bewirtschaftet und vielfältiger gestaltet werden. Das Projekt „Blühendes Bodenseeland“ richtete sich nicht nur an das einschlägige Fachpublikum, sondern auch an Akteure aus Landwirtschaft, kommunaler Verwaltung und der Baubranche. Auch Kinder, Jugendliche und weitere Interessierte, die sich über die Notwendigkeit und Möglichkeit einer blühenden Landschaft informieren oder sich für diese engagieren wollten, wurden angesprochen. Für die „Fachöffentlichkeit“, deren Arbeitsfeld (potentielle) Auswirkungen auf die Lebensbedingungen blütenbesuchender Insekten hat, zielte die Kommunikation einerseits darauf ab, das Bewusstsein für diese Auswirkungen zu schärfen und andererseits durch Erfahrungsaustausch praktische Handlungsmöglichkeiten aufzuzeigen. Im Rahmen von Exkursionen, durch die Aufbereitung und Veröffentlichung von vorbildlichen Aktivitäten und Vorträgen auf Fachveranstaltungen, wurde ein intensiver Dialog über nachhaltige Landwirtschaft, kommunales Engagement für blütenbesuchende Insekten und Biodiversität am Bau angestoßen bzw. fortgeführt. Dazu trug auch die Organisation von eigenen Veranstaltungen bei, wie z.B. die Kooperation mit dem Verein Melifera und die Veranstaltung „Bienen machen Schule“, die sich an PädagogInnen wendet. Besonders erfolgreich war dies in Vorarlberg, wo die meisten Städte und Gemeinden mittlerweile am Programm „natürlich – bunt und artenreich“ teilnehmen und konkrete Flächen im öffentlichen Raum aufwerten. Für die Zielgruppe „allgemeine Öffentlichkeit“ waren zwei Angebote zentral: Einerseits wurde (neben einer Projektbroschüre und der Internetseite) eine attraktive Wanderausstellung erstellt. Die Ausstellung wurde auch fleißig ausgeliehen und stand in zahlreichen Rats- oder Kreishäusern und wurde im Rahmen zahlreicher Veranstaltungen ausgestellt. Ein weiteres, besonderes Angebot war die Möglichkeit, an „Blühbotschafterkursen“ teilzunehmen. Das Konzept wurde in den vergangenen Jahren im Vorarlberg schon umgesetzt und jetzt im Allgäu weiterentwickelt und getestet. „Blühbotschafter“ sind Menschen, die sich im persönlichen Umfeld für eine blühende Landschaft und blütenbesuchende Insekten einsetzen: Vom Gespräch über den Nachbarszaun über die Umgestaltung des eigenen Gartens bis hin zur „politischen Aktion“ in der eigenen Stadt oder Gemeinde. Diese Kurse waren extrem erfolgreich und das Konzept wird in den kommenden Jahren weiterentwickelt und ausgebaut. Die augenblicklich ca. 50 Blühbotschafter haben schon jetzt kleine Projekte angestoßen, die von der Anlage einer Blühfläche an der Schule vor Ort über das Anstoßen von nachbarschaftlichen Patenschaften für kleinere öffentliche Grünflächen bis hin zu Überlegungen für eine GIS-gestützte Erfassung öffentlicher Grünflächen in Kommunen reichen, die ihre Grünflächen systematisch aufwerten möchten. Als dauerhaft verfügbares Angebot wurde der „Wissenspool naturvielfalt bauen“ im Rahmen des Projekts erarbeitet: (https://naturvielfaltbauen.org/2018/12/natur-vielfalt-bauen-wissenspool-bodenseeregion/ ), der in Zukunft ebenfalls weiterentwickelt wird.

Expected Results (DE):

Durch Information, Motivation und praktische Anleitung der Zielgruppen werden kommunale, landwirtschaftliche, gewerbliche und private Flächen insektenfreundlicher bewirtschaftet bzw. vielfältiger und strukturreicher gestaltet. Damit werden nicht nur Insekten gefördert (Lebensraum, Nahrungsangebot) sondern auch eine insgesamt artenreichere Landschaft etabliert. Zudem sind Insekten ein wichtiges Glied in der Nahrungskette. So werden Habitate und Ökosysteme insgesamt stabilisiert und gestärkt.
