The partnership has 14 partners from 7 regions in 6 countries around the North Sea. All in regions with an ageing population, due to both urbanisation and changing demography, and with municipalities that struggle to maintain a basic level of services and common functions. The new approach is to lift forward culture as a driver in local regional development policies and to explore its potential. Culture in the context of CUPIDO is cultural activities (art, dance, music) as well as cultural heritage. The project´s overall objective is to develop new business opportunities in the cultural and cultural heritage sector around the North Sea, to reinforce the economic position, competitiveness and social cohesion of local rural communities in areas with a declining population. The project intends to strengthen a viable and sustainable future economy, based on the social historic role and core qualities and values of the involved regions, cities and local communities.CUPIDO is mainly about commercialisation of the cultural sector that contributes towards creating vibrant, sustainable rural municipalities/communities that attract people to live, work and enjoy life. The project offers its partners an opportunity to jointly share resources, knowledge and expertise to commercialise the cultural sector. It enables insight into new business approaches, stimulates the development of products and services, and aims at in average five new start-ups per area and support to existing SME´s.

Achievements (EN):

Culture as a driver of development Song, dance, theatre, arts, food and festivals; Can cultural heritage and cultural events help to build local economies? The CUPIDO project has trough the partners activities, such as using new digital techniques and skills, films and virtual reality, inspired growth and development of new businesses opportunities and new jobs within the cultural sector in the regions. The main aim of the CUPIDO project was to develop new business opportunities in the cultural and cultural heritage sector around the North Sea. CUPIDO has focused on the following two main questions: 1. How can the culture sector create jobs and welfare growth? 2. How can culture be a driver in local and regional development policies? Pilot regions - Centres of Excellence Cupido started 1st of September 2018. The project has eight pilot regions and the pilot initiatives various for the different regions. The CUPIDO Partners worked together with local, regional and national stakeholders to reach the project's main objective to develop new business opportunities in the cultural and cultural heritage sector around the North Sea. Within the framework of CUPIDO, partners and stakeholders have worked in selected pilot areas with VR, films, online platforms, testbeds, seminars, exhibitions and establishing of hubs, to promoting cultural heritage and supporting businesses in various ways. During the project lifetime the partners made a study that resulted in a report “Power of the culture - the DNA of a region” and “Regional Inspirational Packages”. These led to insights that inspired partners and stakeholders concerning new business-ideas and formats. These studies were also the base for the development and establishment of the nine different Centres of Excellence in the partner regions which can be seen as a display window of what has been done in the pilots. The Centres of Excellens are based on local expertise in the different partner regions and are focusing on e.g. cultural products, digitalisation, VR, music, shellfish, tourism and modern storytelling. Within the Centres partners cooperate with businesses, cultural actors and local and regional authorities. All partners have also been working to stimulate local and regional authorities to include culture as an economic driver in its policy making. The partners wanted to show decision makers that culture plays an important role for the development of the regions, that it can stimulate to new business opportunities. In order to show the power of culture more hand hundred Innovation support measures of different testbeds, workshops events and documents have been carried out. There has been focus on learning from each other within the project on how to find ways to lift culture and to make inhabitants, companies and decision makers to see the potential in cultural heritage and cultural activities. In the final project period the transnational massive open online course (MOOC) on Intrapreneurship and Entrepreneurship in Creative Industries has been finished and launched. Also the transnational CUPIDO Virtual reality toolkit cupidoeu.org is now up and running. It consists of maps, galleries, exhibitions and archives. The CUPIDO partners have during the project collaborated to support knowledge partnerships and cooperation in the NSR and beyond. There have for instance been a cooperation with the Interreg North Sea projects CORA and COM3 and with the Northern Periphery and Arctic Programme project PHIVE where CUPIDO is an associated partner. One objective in the PHIVE project is to build a Northern network for promotion and preservation of heritage and this has CUPIDO taken advantage of.
