Europe is moving towards more sustainable, decentral and digital energy grids. Cities face the task of coordinating the local transition of renewable energy generation and storage, while maintaining grid stability. Integration between energy vectors (heat, electricity) is necessary to enable wider flexibility and improved efficiency. The North Sea Region (NSR) is leading the way, as many novel technologies and business models have been successfully demonstrated. But as the region prepares the transition, new challenges related to governance, finance and technology choices arise.AC/DC aims to deliver 25% reduction of CO2 emissions, 30% reduction of smart grid project development time and 20% of costs.No single organisation has the expertise or ability to experiment with a broad range of technologies, governance and financing models. To achieve these objectives, local authorities Eemnes (NL), West-Suffolk Councils (UK), Malmö (SE) and Mechelen (BE) will jointly explore and demonstrate how scaled approaches could be achieved. Examples include local energy community hubs, peer-to-peer energy trading models, and local collaborative planning tools. Support from 4 knowledge partners (Aarhus University, Johannesberg Science Park, IfM ECS, VITO) will provide expertise and structure. Together, this will result in a systematic upscaling approach, that delivers pathways and action plans to enable the energy grids transition, transferable to other authorities in the region.

Achievements (EN):

The consortium ACCESS has successfully completed its four-year project. Despite the challenges posed by the Covid-19 pandemic, we are pleased to announce that we have not only met but also surpassed a number of the project's initial objectives. The ACCESS municipalities have implemented 5 replicable smart grid pilots in collaboration with our knowledge partners, incorporating a variety of innovative products, technologies, and processes designed to reduce environmental impact. West Suffolk: In collaboration with UrbanChain, West Suffolk established a peer-to-peer (P2P) energy system that operates a UK-wide Virtual Power Plant. UrbanChain has made renewable energy more profitable for generators and more affordable for consumers by matching generation profiles with consumption patterns every half-hour. The 12.4MW Toggam solar farm in West Suffolk was integrated into the UrbanChain P2P system. As part of the ACCESS project, four council-engaged businesses joined WSC's successful Solar for Business scheme, contributing over 1MWp of capacity and achieving an annual carbon savings of 89 tonnes. Mechelen: In partnership with local stakeholders, Mechelen inaugurated the Keerdok hub for renewable e-mobility. This facility is equipped with an impressive array of 419 solar panels on two roofs, totaling 172 kWp. Excess solar energy is either stored in the batteries of V2G (Vehicle-to-Grid) cars for shared mobility or shared with other users on-site. Malmö: Following the successful implementation of the energy assets, the city inaugurated the Sege Park pilot site, which was developed in collaboration with Parkering Malmo. The Sege Park mobility hub is powered by renewable energy and features an impressive array of solar panels with a total capacity of 255 kWp and 220 kW of battery storage. Amersfoort: Both Amersfoort pilots have been implemented and are now operational. Pilot 1 involved a partnership with de Alliantie, the largest social housing provider, to install a 163.8 kWh battery, an 80 kW converter, 302 PV panels, and a smart gateway to connect to the energy markets. In partnership with local housing renovation specialist Energievannu/Klimaatmissie, Pilot 2 focused on the installation of ten heat batteries in individual homes to test sustainable heat technologies. The ACCESS project has achieved significant results through these demonstrations, including a 24% reduction in the costs of smart energy projects, an 18% reduction in CO2 emissions, and a 45% reduction in the development time of smart energy grid projects. The ACCESS project's results and best practices have been disseminated via a variety of channels, including webinars, online and physical workshops, conferences, and more. This extensive dissemination ensures the replication of ACCESS methods throughout the NSR, engaging a total of 1,832 organisations through the ACCESS consortium's efforts. The success of the ACCESS project has spawned various upscaling efforts in West Suffolk, Mechelen, Malmo, and Amersfoort. For example, Virtual Power Plant (VPP) development has begun in both West Suffolk and Amersfoort, with a potential investment of €1.5M. In addition, the smart energy mobility hubs in Mechelen and Malmo have paved the way for plans to deploy additional smart energy management systems, energy assets, and other grid flexibility measures with the goal of creating positive energy neighbourhoods. Even after the completion of the project, partners are committed to continuing certain activities, such as the development of tools and best practises for the replication of smart grid projects. In the final report, we take great pride in communicating the success of the ACCESS project.
